Washing a rodent with cosmetic discs and wet wipes

In addition to the classic bathing and sand, you can wash your pet with cotton pads and wet wipes. It is very simple to use the disc: moisten it in water and rub it over the dirty area with light stroking movements.

You need to use napkins in the same way. But there is one important point: they should not contain alcohols and any kind of chemical elements that can ruin the coat and damage the hamster’s skin. The ideal option is to wash with baby wipes.

As with bathing, after wiping with napkins or discs, the wool should be thoroughly dried with a towel. If this is not done, the pet may get sick.

You can or can’t wash your hamster?

The hamster is one of the cutest and friendliest pets. The hilarious behavior of this animal, its funny face and beautiful fur evoke tenderness in both children and adults.

Those who decide to have a rodent in their house need to study the rules for caring for it in advance. One of the key questions is how to wash your hamster.?

Features of bathing a Syrian hamster

Syrian hamsters are very whimsical and need more serious care during and after bathing. Here are some tips to help you minimize discomfort for your pet:

  • You need to wash your Syrian hamster very quickly. Swimming is not an option for him. he will definitely get sick.
  • At the end of the procedure, dry the coat with a hair dryer on a low setting. Do this only if you are sure that the rodent will not be afraid of the noise.
  • On the way to the cage, wrap your pet in a towel, even if the coat is dry. This is necessary so that his body warms up to its usual temperature.

Tip: To reduce stress for your pet, use a food reward in the form of a treat that he loves. This will help you hold it on your hands longer while drying.

Features of bathing Dzungarian hamsters

Experts do not give an unambiguous answer to the question of whether it is possible to bathe a Dzungarian hamster in water. Most veterinarians agree that washing can only be done if the contamination cannot be removed otherwise. Some people think that bathing is also acceptable if parasites are in the pet’s fur.

The answer to the question of how to wash Dzungarian hamsters is given in the instructions above. In addition, let’s say that you can only take a rodent with your hands. At the same time, this must be done very carefully, since Dzungarian hamsters are very sensitive to touch, like any other breed, by the way. If you squeeze a pet too much, you can damage its internal organs.

Bathing a Jungarik hamster, compared to bathing a Syrian hamster, is an easier procedure. This is due to the following reasons:

  • Dzungariki react more calmly to the fact that they are being washed. Some of them even enjoy bathing procedures.
  • They have a short coat that you can dry quickly and easily with a towel or napkin.
  • They have better immunity, so they are less likely to catch a cold after bathing.

How to bathe hamsters at home?

We turn to the instructions on how to bathe hamsters. The recommendations are relevant for both Dzungarian and Syrians and other breeds:

  • You need to prepare a bowl that will serve as a bathroom. Some people bathe in the sink, but this is not the best option. water can get into the pet’s ears or eyes.
  • Heat water to 30. 35 degrees.
  • Place the pet in a container and start washing slowly, pouring warm water over it.
  • Apply a special detergent and treat the coat, avoiding ears and eyes.
  • Thoroughly wash the body and wipe the rodent with a towel or napkin (or better to get wet).

While your pet is bathing, maintain a dialogue with him. The sound of a familiar voice will help him to endure water procedures more easily. Be prepared for the animal to squeak and bite while washing. In this case, it is better to stop washing and try after a while, when it calms down.

And now let’s talk in more detail about how to wash a Dzhungarik and a Syrian.

When is bathing a rodent justified??

Dzungarian and Syrian hamsters are very freedom-loving and need constant physical activity. They cannot be kept in a cage all the time, otherwise they will become unsociable and may start to hurt. Therefore, rodents often run around the house and, being left to themselves, can get dirty.

One of the most common problems with bathing your hamster is food contamination. The fact is that there is a whole list of substances that can provoke allergies or poisoning in your pet. And since he regularly licks his fur, what he is smeared with will certainly end up in his mouth. So, bathing is justified if the hamster climbed into:

  • Jam.
  • Butter.
  • Honey.

In general, any sticky and viscous products can be added to this list, since it will not be possible to clean the wool other than washing.

A more dangerous situation is when toxic products have got on the body of the animal. Bleach, disinfectants, acetone and other chemicals can cause serious damage to the coat. And if such substances enter the body when the pet is washing itself, this can lead to death.

Another reason to bathe your hamster is if the coat is heavily contaminated with droppings and urine. But this situation is out of the ordinary and only the owner is to blame for it, who does not sufficiently follow the conditions in which the pet lives. To avoid this, you need to regularly clean the hamster’s cage, wash it, and do not forget to change the litter.

Swimming in the sand

Since it is problematic to bathe Syrian hamsters, caring owners wash them in the sand. Actually, in natural conditions, this is how rodents wash themselves.

  • Perfectly cleans fur from stubborn dirt.
  • Doesn’t cause stress, but rather gives pleasure to your pet.
  • Unlike water, sand cannot harm the health of a rodent.

If you use sand, you don’t have to worry about how to properly bathe your hamster and not harm him. The process is simple and natural, and the pet gets only pleasure from it. All you need to do:

  • Pour sand into a container.
  • Put in a cage.
  • Observe. the hamster will wash himself.
  • After bathing, remove the container, otherwise it will turn into an additional toilet.

Important: Buy sand that’s specifically for hamsters.

This is very important as this product undergoes a series of purification measures. Thanks to this, it is absolutely safe for the health of the pet.

Another caveat: do not buy sand intended for cleaning chinchilla fur. It is too fine-grained, so it is unlikely to be able to clean the hamster’s fur properly. In addition, it can enter his airways, causing inflammation.

What to look for before swimming?

In order not to cause physical harm and eliminate severe stress, follow these bathing rules:

  • Heat the water to 30 to 35 degrees before washing your hamster. If it is colder, the pet may catch a cold; hotter. get a heart attack.
  • Be careful not to get water in your eyes and ears.
  • Prepare a towel and hairdryer in advance. After the bath, the animal must be dried as soon as possible, otherwise it may get sick.

Why you shouldn’t bathe hamsters in water

Many people wash hamsters and think that these rodents love and know how to swim. But it is not so. Of course, you can teach the animal to swim by simply dropping it into a shallow saucer of water. He will float on his own, but far from pleasure or his own desire. His instinct of self-preservation will work, therefore, fighting for his life, he will begin to briskly wiggle his legs and swim. In this they are similar to cats: they also do not tolerate contact with water, but if necessary, they are able to swim at short distances.

There are times when the rodent likes to swim (or the owner seems to like it). This is considered a deviation from the norm, and it is strictly forbidden to allow your pet to spend a lot of time in the water. This is due not only to possible hypothermia and colds, there are much more serious reasons.

The fact is that the rodent’s body is not physically designed for this type of activity. The loads received by the animal during swimming are superimposed on the stress from falling into another element. All of these combined can lead to cardiac arrest in the worst case scenario. In the best case, the animal will receive serious health problems.

In this regard, the owners should pay more attention to their pets. If the hamster is washed in water, then it should be immediately taken out and dried.

Animals of this breed are born in the desert, so bathing Syrian hamsters in water is highly discouraged, because their contact with water can easily lead to colds. The Syrians, unlike the Dzungarians, are endowed with long hair, which must first of all be monitored when drying. In the event that a towel does not help, you can use a hair dryer on a light mode. Syrian hamsters, when living in captivity, are susceptible to the rapid onset of diseases, therefore they should not be left in cool rooms and in drafts.

How to properly bathe hamsters

Bathing a hamster at home is a laborious and responsible process. First of all, you need to prepare a small container in which the bathing process will take place. You cannot take deep bowls. the animal can slip and drown in a large volume of water. For washing it is worth using special shampoos for rodents. If it will be problematic to find them, then care products for other, no less fluffy animals will do. The main thing is not to wash the animals with human shampoo in any case. this can lead to skin irritation.

The water temperature should be at least 30 ° C, ideally 35–40 ° C. The shampoo is applied with light massaging movements on the back and abdomen (while bathing, do not allow moisture to get on the head, eyes and ears of the animal. this is a sure way to catch a cold). Rinse off the detergent very carefully, touching the fur with your fingers. Otherwise, if particles of chemistry remain on the skin or wool, the animal will itch and irritate. When all the shampoo is washed, you need to wipe with a dry cloth (in the direction of hair growth), then wrap in a towel and hold until it is completely dry. So that the rodent does not experience stress during the bathing and drying process, the owner can talk to him, call him affectionately by name.

These small rodents do not like to come into contact with water, so it is worth bathing them only in case of severe pollution or the appearance of parasites. The hamster washes himself, and in order to simply help your pet to keep the fur clean, you can use a damp cloth or cotton pad.

Do not forget that after any water procedures, the rodent must be placed in a warm place in order to avoid the unpleasant consequences of bathing.

Bathing hamsters is justified in the following situations

Despite all the harm that bathing brings, there are situations that justify washing the animal in water.

  • Got dirty with food. the rodent got into honey, jam, mayonnaise and other similar products, which leads to the need for water procedures. Otherwise, the animal can lick it off the wool itself, which may well lead to intestinal upset or even poisoning.
  • Contamination with household chemicals. if chemicals (dishwashing or floor cleaning agents, disinfectants, etc.) get on the hamster’s coat, rinse the fur immediately with water.
  • The appearance of fleas or ticks on pets is rare, but very unpleasant. In this case, the little rodent will have to endure while the owner washes it with a special parasite shampoo.
    How to dry an animal?

Thus, it is easy to notice that sometimes the owners not only can, but also need to redeem their pets. But in no case should you forget about the rules of bathing, otherwise the desire to help will turn into harm.

Features of swimming in water of different breeds of hamsters

Not every hamster in the water feels the same. Particularly significant differences are present among the Syrians and Dzungariks.

Dzungariki are children of the steppes. They are less prone to colds than the Syrians, but any draft will lead to a runny nose and sneezing. It is possible to bathe Dzungarian hamsters in water, but, nevertheless, contact with it should be minimal and rare.

In addition, when bathing a rodent of any breed, one should not forget about the special recommendations indicated above.

Hazards from contact with water

Water brings little benefit to rodents and, of course, more harm. The main negative effects of bathing include:

  • Severe stress. a small rodent begins to get nervous in the water, from which it will try to escape from the hands of the owner and may bite him. If the hamster falls into the water, it will simply swell. There is also a risk of heart attack in a poor animal.
  • Hypothermia. wet coat leads to colds. Colds, in turn, can progress to pneumonia.
  • There is a special fat layer on the hamster’s skin that protects the animal from diseases. When washing, especially with shampoo, it is washed off, and the animal’s immunity becomes many times weaker.
  • A pet will get one hundred percent otitis media if, while bathing, water gets into his ear, since it is very difficult to shake it out of there.
  • Drying the wool becomes quite a challenge. Wet fur will lead to a weakening of the immune system, the possibility of catching a viral disease will increase.
  • Injury. slipping in the sink or falling out of the owner’s hands, the animal can fall not only into the water, but also onto a hard surface. This will lead to bruises or fractures of the limbs, and the small animal and its owner do not need extra trauma.

The only benefit that bathing will bring is only when it is heavily soiled. Undoubtedly, washing a hamster will bring more negative consequences to its owner than positive ones. Do not bathe hamsters once again, they do not need it.

Is it possible to bathe a hamster in water at home and how to do it

Like other fluffy animals, hamsters do a good job of washing their own fur. They are quite clean, so they lick about 5-6 times a day. But sometimes situations arise when the rodent is not able to clean the fur on its own. In such cases, the owner should be aware of how to bathe hamsters at home.

What does it mean to “bathe” for a hamster

Speaking of bathing, we mean good washing with soap, shampoo, immersion in water, long stay in water. A long and exciting process. But for a hamster, bathing in water is contraindicated. This is a very clean animal. it cleans itself on its own. We will remove the dirt that it cannot cope with with a special brush.

Is it possible to bathe in water Syrian hamsters

Before deciding whether or not to bathe your hamster in the water, it’s a good idea to get to know its breed. Syrian hamsters are inhabitants of desert lands. Water is rarely seen. Accordingly, washing in water for a Syrian is very stressful and the ability to seize pneumonia.

Conclusion: you can’t bathe Syrian hamsters in water.

Do hamsters like to swim

Syrians and Dzungarian people just love to swim!

It’s great to swim, the water is warm. Yeah, of course. Come on to the bathhouse! That I would climb here again. Only chilled and wet.

Sand! Do you hear, owners? Only sand! Get into the bath yourself, I didn’t sign up for this.

Do not use sand from the street, it is so easy to infect a hamster with anything, and large grains of sand will bring discomfort to the animal and can injure it.

Experts do not recommend bathing your hamster in chinchilla sand. Fine sand particles can cause pneumonia. Better to look for special hamster sand.

It is not necessary to keep a bath of sand in a cage constantly. The animal will quickly scatter it. Have a sand bath twice a week.

Place the container with sand in the cage, in a familiar environment for the animal, to avoid stress. If your Syrian or Dzungarik does not climb to swim in the bath, it’s not scary. They are curious and cautious. Khoma examines it, see if it is possible to escape in a moment of danger, try the bath on the tooth. After some time, the hamster will learn how to use it.

Often, instead of bathing, the animal goes there to the toilet. It is important to gradually let him know where the toilet is and where is the bathing place. Bathing sand should be put on for a certain time, and then removed.

Whether to bathe dzungariks in water

It is easier with Dzungarian. water is not exotic for them, and strong immunity protects them from colds. But this does not mean that you can bathe jungar hamsters in the water at any time. They can tolerate water procedures more easily, but why make the animal nervous again?

What you need to bathe your hamster in the water

  • Decide what we will wash the hamster in. Most owners do not hesitate and wash their hamster in a regular bathroom sink. It is a bad idea. It is better to prepare a container of water in advance.
  • If the water is cold or hotter than necessary, the animal will get stress, and any stress is minus a few days or weeks of the pet’s life. In addition, the animal can react very violently to attempts to lower it into the water, especially if this has not been done to it before. The optimum water temperature is 32-36 degrees.
  • You will need a special rodent shampoo. Leave HEAD AND SHOULDERS for your hair. They will still be useful to you.
  • Warm terry robe or towel. Of course, the towel will be too big for the hamster, but a good absorbent microfiber cloth (for the table, not for glasses), please provide. It costs 20 rubles in Auchan. Better yet, 2. First we wipe, on the second it sits, dries.

How to wash a hamster in water correctly

With sand, everything is clear. give the animal a bath of sand and watch the pure joy of the hamster. One can come across the opinion that it is strictly forbidden to wash hamsters in water. If the hamster eats well, does not get sick, does not experience severe stress, in a word, the conditions of keeping are met, then the coat will be well-groomed and healthy. He will not need additional water treatments.

How to bathe a hamster at home. video with a description

Carefully immerse the pet in water and lather with a pre-prepared rodent shampoo. When washing, avoid getting water in the ears, nostrils, eyes. The shampoo must be washed off with clean water. Rinse well. All that is left on the fur, the hamster will lick himself. there is a chance of poisoning. Do not get carried away and watch how the hamster swims in the water, touching its paws and poking its muzzle on the edges of the bathtub. The owner may think that the animal likes to swim in the water, but this is not true: for a rodent, such a procedure is a stressful situation. The whole bathing process should last no more than three minutes.

In confirmation of my words. a visual

Look at it from the very beginning, write in the comments what the owners of the animal did right and what did not? I think you will notice the stress of the water too.

By the way, many people prefer to wash their hamster without shampoo. Just water. And apply shampoo if parasites have gotten in the fur of the animal. Read the instructions for the shampoo carefully and make sure that the shampoo for these parasites helps. Or get a clean hamster with clean fleas.

A hamster, like a small child, needs a warm and soft towel after bathing. After carefully wrapping the animal, gently dry it and comb it with a special comb or a simple toothbrush. If the coat is too wet or the temperature in the apartment is lower than usual, dry the animal with a hairdryer, setting the minimum speed and temperature of the directed air flow. If the hamster starts to panic after turning on the hair dryer, turn off the device immediately. The hamster’s heart beats 5 times faster than ours. Do not need faster.

Do not let small children bathe or dry your hamster. An older child needs to be clearly explained when to put a hamster in water and how to care for its skin and hair.

Preparation for bathing

Hamsters in nature live in the steppe, so they are extremely rare with water, which means that they are not used to contact with it. If there is a persistent desire to independently monitor the pet’s hygiene, you need to gradually acquaint him with the water, showing that it is harmless, and nothing bad will happen to the animal. You do not need to try to bathe the animal in a large amount of water at once, as it can get scared, wriggle out of hand and drown.

Hamsters are considered clean animals that take care of their fur coat up to five times a day, so there is no particular need to bathe them. If the pet is properly kept and the litter is changed in time, then the rodent will not be able to get dirty.

If an unpleasant odor emanates from the animal, and parasites began to appear in the wool, then the intervention will be justified. Bath water should be warm, but not hot. Cool water increases the risk of illness, and hot water can lead to a heart attack. The optimal range is considered a temperature of 30-35 degrees Celsius.

Do I need water treatments?

When buying a hamster for yourself or a child, you should get as much information as possible about this animal before it appears in the house. The first thing that is important to know is the most suitable breeds for home keeping, how they look and what their peculiarities are. Then a habitat for the future pet is selected, a place for rest, active pastime and a food zone is thought out.

In order for the animal to be in comfortable conditions for itself, you need to know about its sleep and wakefulness regime. The most important aspect is considered to be the hygiene of the animal, since it is undesirable to bathe hamsters. In case of contamination of the fur, paws or muzzle, you need to know how to properly clean the pet.

Among the unfavorable factors, due to which it is not worthwhile to carry out standard water procedures, we can name those described below.

  • The stress of being in the water. Hamsters do not like water and will resist water procedures in every possible way, as a result of which the animal will experience severe stress, from which a heart attack can occur. In agony, the pet can bite the owner to escape from the water trap, and if it accidentally falls into the water, the hamster will not be able to do anything and will swell.
  • Hypothermia, which occurs due to the wetting of the fur. This can cause the pet to catch a cold. Bottom line. pneumonia.
  • Washing off a special fat layer from the skin of the animal, which protects it from diseases. If you buy a hamster with shampoo, the immune system will become much weaker.
  • If water gets into the ear, the pet will have otitis media, since it is extremely difficult to wipe the ears.
  • If the wool is wet, it is quite difficult to dry it, and when wet, the chances of getting sick increase many times.
  • Injuries while taking water treatments. A worried hamster can break free from his hands and hit a sink or hard table and be injured, which could damage his health.

Thus, hamsters are among those pets that are best not immersed in water for hygiene procedures. These animals are simply not adapted for swimming, and such a load leads to significant deviations in health, and in the worst case, to cardiac arrest.

Is it possible to bathe hamsters and how to do it correctly?

People often have pets to brighten up their loneliness or to diversify their everyday life. Lovers can be different, so you need to know everything about caring for them. If a hamster will live at home, then it is worth figuring out how to feed it, where to keep it and what hygiene procedures to carry out.

Regardless of how exactly the bath procedures were carried out, you should pay special attention to drying the pet. In order for the process to proceed calmly, and it was possible to wipe the fur with high quality, it is important to calm the animal by returning it to a calm state. The most effective way is simple communication with your pet. At the sound of the owner’s voice, the animal automatically calms down. The main thing is to speak softly and gently, soothing your pet.

The safest option for drying your hamster is to wrap it in a soft towel or napkin, which quickly absorbs moisture and does not pose any threat to the integrity of the pet’s skin. If you have time, then it is best to wrap up the hamster after bathing and keep it in this state until the fur is completely dry.

In case of a shortage of time, you can try to use a hairdryer, having previously set it to the weakest mode and carefully introducing the pet to the household appliance. If you turn on the device abruptly, and even at full power, then the hamster will simply get scared and run away, and may also get burns on the skin from contact with too hot air.

If the procedure for bathing, wiping and drying causes great concern, then it is better to refuse them and use an alternative option, for which you will only need sand.

In water

Keeping a hamster at home is not difficult, because the main thing is to feed it and clean up after it on time. In case of any violations of sanitation, the animal may develop parasites on the fur or an unpleasant odor from the animal itself. If this happens, then you must immediately take action: bathe the hamster. The sequence of actions will look as described below.

  • Preparation of the place for swimming. It should be a flat and non-slippery surface on which the swimsuit is installed.
  • Heating water to the desired temperature. The animal should be comfortable during the procedure.
  • You need to have a hamster shampoo, soft towel or cloth to wipe with you.
  • The pet is placed on a plank and gently held with one hand, while the other at this time gradually pours the prepared water onto the animal.
  • While bathing, the rodent must not fall on the head or ears, as this is fraught with serious consequences for its health. The procedure is carried out only with the hands, without the use of any hard washcloths or rags, so as not to harm the pet.
  • Throughout the bathing procedure, it is important to create a friendly environment for the animal. To minimize stress from the procedure, you need to talk to the hamster, calm it down, communicate calmly and affectionately. In no case should you allow sharp or loud sounds, which can frighten the animal even more.
  • When starting to wash your pet, it is worth checking that all windows are closed and to minimize the risk of drafts, which are very destructive for such small animals.
  • Due to the use of a special shampoo, it must be washed off well so that there are no residues on the skin and fur that will cause burning and itching in the animal.
  • Once the hamster is completely washed, dry it with a towel or napkin. If necessary, you can use a hairdryer, but keep it at a safe distance from the animal.

If you can do without full bathing, then you should choose a more acceptable option for the animal, which will require some improvised means and a little time.

How to bathe a hamster

How to wash?

Washing your hamster at home is not too difficult if you have a clear understanding of this procedure. Due to the fact that rodents do not like water, it is not enough to just bathe them. you need to properly organize a workplace for this and skillfully handle your pet. Knowing the breed of a pet, its character will help to set up the hamster correctly and bathe it without any problems.

Depending on the degree of contamination of the animal, there are several options for cleaning it: bathing, using wet wipes or sponges. The first option is needed for serious cases, the second. to help in the pet’s hygiene procedures. If you bathe your hamster only in case of real need and correctly approach this procedure, then the animal will receive the necessary help and will not suffer in any way. Using wipes and sponges will minimize stress and keep your pet clean and healthy.

Wet wipes

In the event that the hamster’s hygiene procedures have not been successful, he cannot clean himself on his own, it is worth intervening and helping him. The most convenient means for this will be cotton pads, which are simply moistened with water and gently affect the contaminated place, eliminating it. At the same time, it is important to ensure that the water is not cold or too hot. an indicator of 40 degrees is considered the most desirable. If there is no cotton pad or sponge at hand, then you can use wet wipes and clean the animal with them.

Do not take any wipes you have at home, as some of them may contain hazardous chemicals that can harm your pet. Best to use products for children.

Despite the fact that there is no bathing procedure as such, after wiping it is also important to dry the pet without leaving its fur damp. The choice of wet wipes will be more acceptable for the hamster, as it will not cause him significant discomfort and stress, and therefore will not harm. In addition, in this case, the possibility of water getting into the ears of the animal is minimized, which is also an undoubted plus.

Food contamination

Hamsters are very clean. The owners love to watch the hamsters wash themselves. They constantly tidy up the fur, licking and brushing it. If your pet gets dirty with jam, honey, butter, mayonnaise, or other liquid and sticky foods, wash it. Otherwise, starting to brush the wool, the rodent will eat up the forbidden food. At best, this will cause indigestion or allergies, and at worst, the animal will die from poisoning.

If the dirt is fresh and not too strong, you can wash the fur by wiping it with wet wipes or a cotton pad moistened with water. Sweet food is well removed in this way, but in order to wash off fatty foods, you will have to soap the wool.

Local pollution

When a long-haired animal encounters such a problem as chewing gum entangled in the hair, candy, glue, you need to try to cut the affected area. The owners of angora hamsters agree that it is better to sacrifice the beauty of their fur than to bathe their Syrian hamsters in water.

Bathing algorithm

Washing your hamster in the sink is not the best option. It is better if the animal can lean on its paws and not slide too much. Hamster bath. any small, stable container.

Fill the bowl with lukewarm water (slightly above room temperature) 2 cm.

Shampoo without perfume

Hand towel, pet cloth, paper towels

List of necessary components for washing

Violation of the protective layer of the skin

After washing, especially with the use of shampoo, soap, the pH of the skin and its protective fat layer are disturbed. Even a single procedure can sometimes cause dermatitis. They constantly itch, scratches and purulent wounds appear on the skin. Subcutaneous mites are activated if the hamster was a carrier of demodicosis in a “sleeping” form. A humid environment is an excellent environment for the development of fungus (lichen).

Why you shouldn’t bathe hamsters in water

You can often find photos and videos where the hamster himself bathes in the water, and even swims. Unfortunately, in reality, everything is not as fun and funny as it seems at first glance. Indeed, in the wild, hamsters do not swim by themselves. It will not be difficult to “teach” a hamster to swim, it is enough to run it into a bowl of water, or into the bathroom, and it will surely swim, briskly moving its paws. This skill of the hamster is explained by the natural desire to survive. Here they can be compared with other animals, for example, with cats: by their nature, they do not like to swim, although they can do it at short distances.

It should be understood that the hamster is not designed for physical activity. And if you take into account how much stress a small rodent gets, getting into a container of water, such a “swim” may well lead to a rupture of the heart, or to serious health problems.

Even if it seems to you that the rodent likes to swim in the water, you should not allow this. Most likely, this is some kind of deviation or violation. In the same way as in the situation with food, a hamster can eat almost anything, despite the list of foods prohibited for hamsters.

Therefore, if your hamster does get into the water, you should not film it and watch it swim from the side, as this activity can be fatal. You should immediately get it out of the water, dry the coat, be especially careful about getting water into the eyes and ears, as this can cause serious illness.

Is it possible to bathe hamsters

Probably, every owner of a hamster had to notice how this little lump several times a day combed out its fur with its paws. This tells us that hamsters are fairly clean rodents and, in most cases, are able to clean themselves on their own. In the wild, hamsters live in deserts and steppes, with little or no water. Therefore, the best and most familiar way to clean them is sand. But is it possible to bathe hamsters in water at home??

It should be remembered that bathing in water for hamsters can be quite dangerous. In order not to harm your pet, you need to follow some rules when bathing.

Hazards from contact with water

Bathing a hamster in water is dangerous not only for his health, but also for his life. This method should only be used when the hamster is unable to clean itself. Regardless of how the pet itself relates to water (gets stress from bathing, or he likes it), there are a number of risks that arise when a hamster comes into contact with water:

  • do not allow a jet of water to hit the hamster, as this will cause him great stress and resistance, he can bite on the hand;
  • wet hamster hair becomes very slippery, and the hamster may simply fall out of the hands when washing;
  • when bathing, the protective fatty ball of the hamster’s skin collapses, which leads to a decrease in immunity;
  • Wet wool cools quickly and can cause not only stress, but also lead to colds. But a cold can lead to more serious consequences.

How to properly bathe hamsters

Since the habitat of hamsters is the steppe and desert, it should be understood that swimming in water in such an environment is almost impossible. Therefore, when answering the question of whether hamsters are being washed, it should be emphasized that real bathing with water is not desirable for a hamster.

A simpler and less stressful method may be suitable for cleaning the rodent of dirt. To do this, you need a damp cotton swab. It is best to keep the napkin warm. Cotton wool, simple wet baby wipes without chemical impregnation are also suitable. Take the rodent in your hands and wipe it thoroughly with a napkin, if the pet is very dirty, repeat the procedure several times.

After washing, dry the wool well and place the rodent in a warm place so that it does not catch a cold.

If we talk about bathing in water, then the procedure itself is quite simple, but at the same time you need to be extremely careful and attentive so as not to harm the health of the pet.
