Why cucumbers are useful for rabbits

Cucumber is one of the most common vegetables, and it is for this reason that it is often present in the diet of rabbits. Cucumbers are rich in:

  • minerals: iron, sodium, phosphorus, potassium, manganese, iodine, zinc and chromium;
  • vitamins B1, B2, C, folic acid (B9);
  • proteins;
  • carbohydrates;
  • fiber;
  • water.

The fact that the vegetable is rich in B vitamins helps livestock breeders cope with such a feature of the rabbit body as coprophagia. Many animals tend to eat their own droppings due to the lack of vitamin B in the body. The reason for this deficiency is that in the cecum of the animal, hay and grass are fermented with the help of bacteria. In the process, useful substances are excreted with night feces. Rabbits eat their own droppings to make up for this loss.

Eating excrement in small amounts is normal and even beneficial for the animal, but large amounts can lead to digestive problems and vomiting. With crowded keeping of animals, helminth infection is possible if one of the rabbits is a carrier of parasites.

Cucumbers are given fresh, in pieces or grated. In grated form, they are successfully fed, mixed with bran. Due to its juiciness, the vegetable is eaten in hot weather, the animal receives part of the necessary water from it.

After feeding, it is necessary to check the feeders for residues: leftovers can rot or turn sour. A rabbit who eats this risks getting food poisoning or an upset stomach, which is dangerous to his life and health. After eating, the feeders should be washed. The amount of food needs to be adjusted so that the next time it does not remain, but the animals are not hungry either.

Can rabbits give watermelon and melon, harm and benefit

Rabbits eat many other foods besides grass. We will not consider feeding cereals in this article, but let’s talk about whether it is possible to give rabbits a watermelon and melon.

Now that summer is in full swing, there is a lot of pumpkin waste on the table. over, not every rabbit breeder knows whether it is possible to feed them to rabbits and what contraindications this may be.

When watermelon is bad

In some cases, giving watermelon to a rabbit is not recommended for various reasons.

What else can you feed rabbits

The following foods can be added to food for rabbits:

  • Green food. This is, first of all, fresh grass and garden greens. Such food is eaten from early spring to late autumn, as it contains many vitamins and substances necessary for the growth and development of animals. Freshly cut grass is recommended to wither a little in the sun. Herbs such as wormwood, dill, chicory, yarrow work well.
  • Rough feed. Hay forms the basis of the entire diet of rabbits. In addition to it, you can give straw, twigs of trees and shrubs. Dried meadow grasses such as clover, alfalfa, chamomile, lungwort, yarrow and others are good for hay. Small twigs are taken from birch, linden, aspen, maple, poplar, hornbeam, willow, dogwood, pear, apple, etc.
  • Juicy food. It contains a lot of water, so it is easily absorbed and processed by the body. It contains many vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, as well as fiber, vegetable fats, proteins. These feeds include beets, potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, zucchini, Jerusalem artichoke, watermelon, cabbage, other vegetables and fruits, and silage. For fruits, apples and pears are best. Some cleanings and scraps are also suitable for feed. Rabbits can be peeled from potatoes, cabbage leaves, watermelon peels.
  • Concentrated feed. They include cereals (oats, wheat, barley, corn), legumes, waste (bran, meal, cake) and additives from meat and bone or fish meal. In their composition, they contain a lot of calories, proteins, minerals, but few vitamins, therefore vitamins, minerals and sometimes prophylactic agents for diseases (antibiotics, other medicines) are added to the balanced food for the eared ears.

Melon and its rind should only be given to rabbits as a treat, alternating with other vegetables or fruits. It is difficult for the digestive system to digest and has contraindications. It should be introduced into the diet carefully, all the time observing the reaction of the body. If everything is in order, this product can be fed in the summer or prepared for the winter.

In case of violation of the feeding regime

Giving a treat before loading the main feed is a big mistake!

A piece of watermelon rind eaten on an empty stomach can cause flatulence and colic, which can lead to gastrointestinal stasis. The animal refuses to move, eat or drink, its temperature drops, etc. All this can end with the death of a rabbit.

An excess of fiber can cause another dangerous problem. blockage of the intestinal passages, which leads to its obstruction. If it is impossible to cleanse the intestines within 10-12 hours, the rabbit dies.

Sometimes eating watermelon by rabbits causes them diarrhea. If untreated, it leads to rapid dehydration, weakness and death.

The tasty and sweet melon flesh may please rabbits and become their favorite treat, but some individuals may not want this treat. This juicy product is best served with hay or other fibrous foods.

Which is better: pulp or rind?

The rind is healthier, but the pulp will also be used if after the first sample it did not cause an upset stomach.

In the pulp of watermelon, diuretic substances are increased, moreover, it accumulates nitrates in itself, in contrast to the rind.

It is better not to offer pulp to dwarf breeds at all. even a short-term imbalance of the intestine can lead to its long-term recovery, or even to the death of a pet.

For dwarf rabbits, cut off the hardest thin green layer of crust before serving.
