DIY Fish Food

Homemade food for aquarium fish

fish, food

If your family, friends or acquaintances have older generation aquarists. those who kept fish back in Soviet times, the era of scarcity. then you should hear from them more than once how much easier life is for modern aquarium lovers.

But most importantly, there is a huge selection of ready-made fish food. Older aquarists had to spend a lot of time to prepare food for their pets, to get bloodworms and daphnia, to get a scarce ready-made food.

However, their experience can also be useful for modern aquarium lovers, because the food prepared with their own hands is confidence in the quality and naturalness of the components, and, therefore, in its benefits for fish.

Protein feed

Prepared with your own hands from natural products, such food can become a full substitute not only for dry food, but also for live food. In terms of their nutritional value, they are not inferior to the highest quality aquarium nutrition, but they will cost you much less.

  • Beef heart. Grate frozen beef heart. Give without rinsing in small portions no more than once a day.
  • Egg. Pour the raw chicken egg into a cup, stir gently. Boil water and pour the prepared egg into boiling water in a thin stream. Stir constantly while pouring. Catch the finished egg with a net. Feed the fish in small portions.
  • Freshly frozen fish. The fish is grated or passed through a meat grinder. Having decomposed the prepared mass into small containers, it can be stored in the freezer for quite a long time. Before use, it is recommended to defrost the mass at room temperature, give it to the fish in small quantities.
  • Boiled fish. The same method of cooking as for fresh frozen food, the only thing is that you can chop food with a knife. In both cases, it is better to use white, lean fish, such as cod.
  • Shrimp, krill. Boil, cool, chop, rinse.
  • Milk. Boil the milk, cool, separate the “foam”. a slimy film from its surface. She will be the food. Give the shredded film in small portions.
  • Sour milk. Prepare yogurt (just let the milk turn sour for this). Important: curdled milk is prepared not from pasteurized, but from raw milk! Rinse the resulting mass from the whey. To do this, place it in a container with water, shake it, wait until the yogurt sinks to the bottom, drain the water. Repeat this several times. The washed curdled milk is stored for a long time.

When feeding aquarium fish with home-made natural protein feeds, it is important to dispense food in small portions, and remove leftovers from the aquarium immediately after feeding. These feeds are very nutritious and deteriorate quickly, left in the water they will begin to decompose and can cause a bacteriological explosion. water turbidity, fish diseases.

Protein foods are especially useful for predators, and boiled egg yolk is a classic food for fry or very young small fish.

Vegetable feed

These types of feed can be prepared from vegetables, cereals, herbs, loaf. there is also enough vegetable fiber. It is an excellent food for herbivorous aquarium fish.

The feeding conditions are the same as for protein feed: small portions, quick removal of uneaten residues.

  • Manka. Pour a tablespoon of semolina with boiling water, let it brew for 15-20 minutes. Rinse, give out a little.
  • White loaf. Doesn’t require any special preparation. Better to use stale, crusty. Crumble and give out little by little, remove leftovers immediately.
  • Salad, broccoli, carrots. Boil vegetables, chop, rinse, serve in small quantities.
  • Cereals. Grind, boil with boiling water. Rinse the resulting mass.

Both plant and protein components can be mixed in different proportions, vitamins can be added to them, based on the needs and characteristics of aquarium fish. You can develop your own, unique recipes for homemade food. It is recommended to add chopped dry nettle to the feed (it contains a lot of vitamins, purchased in pharmacies), dried daphnia (gives the feed an attractive aroma for fish, can also act as an independent feed).

Quality indicators of feed for sturgeon “AQUAREX”

Food for sturgeon differs depending on the age of the fish, water temperature, conditions of detention, functional purpose.

You can feed the sturgeon with fodder of your own production, domestic or foreign. The price for self-produced feed is less, but it may not be of high quality. Foreign feeds provide fast growth of fish and good survival, but are expensive and sometimes difficult to obtain. The best option is domestic products, which are distinguished by a reasonable price. It is better than the feed supplied to the market from Asia.

Planet AGRO. Carp for sturgeon

Holders of the patent RU 2297154:

The invention relates to feed production. The method consists in introducing a hydrolyzate of animal origin into the feed mixture with the addition of organic and inorganic acids (pH 4.0-5.0), with the addition of a homogenate of sturgeon viscera with a hydrolysis depth of 55-75%. The method allows to accelerate the growth rate and reduce feed costs. 1 tab.

The invention relates to fish farming, in particular to feed production, and can be used in the development of compound feed formulations for juvenile sturgeon fish, marine aquaculture and other farm animals.

The main component of nutrients in starter feed for young sturgeon fish is protein, as source of essential and essential amino acids. A known method of preparing fish feed for sturgeon fish, where the main source of protein is fish meal, as well as flour from krill, other aquatic organisms and animals (see USSR Patent 788880, 1993).

However, in the process of preparing animal flour, easily digestible protein compounds during cooking are removed in the form of pre-press broths, which significantly reduces the availability of residual protein for assimilation by juvenile sturgeon fish.

The closest in technical essence is a method of preparing starting compound feed for juvenile sturgeon fish, in which dry ingredients, fish meal, yeast, plant components, multivitamin premix, fish oil are introduced into the feed mixture. The composition of feed nutrients is balanced in terms of the level of essential amino acids, protein, fat, minerals, carbohydrates and energy (see. Tutorial. Ponomarev S. V. et al. Technologies for growing and feeding aquaculture facilities in the south of Russia. Astrakhan, 2002, p. 24, 136).

However, this method does not take into account the need of sturgeon fish at different periods of development of the organism (larval, fry and adult) in protein compounds of a certain molecular weight, which is of great importance for the development of juvenile fish, because K. It is associated with different digestibility of protein structures in the process of hydrolysis by proteolytic enzymes of fish. This disadvantage is the reason for the low growth rate of juvenile fish, their poor survival rate and high consumption of compound feed, since K. Protein digestion gets harder.

The technical task is to create a method for preparing feed for juvenile sturgeon fish, which allows to increase the growth rate of fish, their survival and reduce feed costs by increasing the digestibility of feed.

The technical result of increasing the growth rate and reducing feed costs is achieved by the fact that in the known method of preparing feed for juvenile sturgeon fish, including mixing components of animal and vegetable origin, fat and a multivitamin premix, before being added to the feed mixture, the protein component of animal origin is hydrolyzed to a depth of 55- 75%. In this case, the resulting hydrolyzate is introduced into the feed mixture in an amount of 5-25% of the feed weight.

Hydrolysis of the protein component of animal origin to a depth of 55-75% provides optimal hydrolyzate of such final protein products as free amino acids, oligopeptides with M.M. 600-1800 daltons (28.7%), polypeptides with M.M. 2500-3700 daltons (16.56%), polypeptides with M.M. 4500-6500 daltons (18.6%), as well as low molecular weight soluble protein with M.M. 25-35 thousand Daltons (18.7%), protein with M.M. 55-60 thousand Daltons (8.5%), 70-76 thousand Daltons (8.7%), and a high molecular weight protein with MM 120 thousand Daltons (1.5%). The hydrolyzate with an average depth of hydrolyzate (55-75%) is characterized by a low m of free amino acids and oligopeptides and an increased level of easily digestible polypeptides, which favorably affects the development of larvae in the first few days when hatching from eggs, when proteolytic enzymes almost do not function. Small amounts of free amino acids and oligopeptides in the hydrolyzate are easily absorbed into the intestinal walls in the first days of exogenous feeding of sturgeon larvae, without protease attack. This stimulates the growth and development of juveniles. The presence in the hydrolyzate of a high level of polypeptides with M.M. 2500-3700 daltons ensures the normal development of the enzyme complex of proteases in prefalks. These polypeptides are easily cleaved by enzymes and absorbed. The presence of a high molecular weight water-soluble protein (MM than 10 thousand Daltons and polypeptides with a mass of 4500-6500 Daltons) activates the further development of the digestive and enzyme systems of fish, juveniles reach the juvenile period of development and then can consume compound feed with a complex protein structure without preliminary hydrolysis.

Hydrolysates with a depth of hydrolysis of less than 55% contain mainly high-molecular-weight protein and free amino acids. This leads to poor development of sturgeon larvae and overconsumption of food. Hydrolysates with a deep degree of hydrolysis (more than 75%) contain a lot of free amino acids and oligopeptides, the excess of which leads to a decrease in the efficiency of protein assimilation, which also negatively affects the development of fish larvae, their survival and leads to poor feed intake due to the cessation of the development of enzyme systems.

The hydrolyzate of the protein component of animal origin is introduced into the feed mixture in the amount of 5-25% of the feed weight, since this amount satisfies the fish’s need for essential amino acids and the optimal level of easily digestible protein fractions. When the hydrolyzate is introduced into the feed mixture in an amount of less than 5% of the mass, the amount of easily digestible peptides in the feed is insufficient for the full development of sturgeon larvae at the early stages of development. The introduction of a hydrolyzate into the feed in an amount of more than 25% leads to an excess of free amino acids and oligopeptides, which further inhibit the development of their own proteolytic enzymes in fish and leads to a decrease in their growth.

Example 1. Several variants of food for young sturgeon fish were prepared, the main composition: hydrolyzate, fish meal, dry feed, yeast, vitazar, fish oil, multivitamin premix PF-2V.

In the early ontogenesis of sturgeon larvae, during the transition to exogenous nutrition, the formation of the digestive system continues for 21 days. The stomach, digestive glands are formed, the number of pyloric appendages increases, the activity of proteolytic enzymes, first trypsin-like, then pepsin-like, increases. White fish larvae have especially high requirements for the protein composition of food.

Fish meal and hydrolysates with a hydrolysis depth of 65% were used as a component of animal origin.

The hydrolyzate was prepared from small fish. The raw material was crushed, organic and inorganic acids (pH 4.0-5.0) were added in a ratio of 100: 2, then the crushed mass of sturgeon viscera was added, thermostated for 7 days at t = 35-36 ° C. Then, the insoluble components of the raw material and fat were separated by centrifugation, and the liquid part was dried. The resulting hydrolyzate with a hydrolysis depth of 65% was introduced into the feed mixture.

The prepared version of the food was used to feed the early fry of sturgeon fish reared in aquariums with a capacity of 10 L at a water temperature of 16 ° C, an oxygen content of 8 mg / L, with the number of reared fry 500 pcs. And a double repetition of the experiment. 10% of the fishmeal mass was replaced with a hydrolyzate. The increase was 874%, the survival rate was 68%, the feed consumption was 0.9 units. (see table).

Example 2. Fodder for juvenile fish was prepared analogously to example 1. As a component of animal origin, a hydrolyzate with HG (depth of hydrolysis) 55% was used and it was introduced into the feed mixture in an amount of 25% by weight of the fodder meal. This compound feed was used to feed juveniles reared according to the scheme given in example 1. As a result, over 21 days, the weight gain of fish was 815% with a survival rate of 63.8% and feed costs of 1.0 units. (see table).

Example 3. Food for juvenile fish was prepared analogously to example 1, except that, as a component of animal origin, a hydrolyzate with a GH of 75%. The hydrolyzate was introduced into the feed mixture in an amount of 5% by weight of fish meal. As a result, the final increase in fry was 743%, the survival rate was 64.2%, and the feed consumption was 1.2 units. (see table).

The introduction of the proposed method will allow in a shorter time to obtain viable juvenile sturgeon fish (fry, downstream migrants, smolts) with minimal losses (high survival rate 63-68%), low feed costs (0.9-1.2 units). This will also reduce the amount of scarce feed raw materials, fish larvae, eggs, broodstock for obtaining the required fry, downstream migrants, smolts.

What to feed

A very important point is feeding. Sturgeons are not picky about food, but still require a certain combination and balance in food. The better quality food is given to the fish, the bigger and faster they will grow. And health in general depends on the composition of the diet. Therefore, you can use:

  • Foreign feed for sturgeon;
  • Domestic feed for sturgeon;
  • Homemade food.

It is also worth learning more about how to use fishmeal as fertilizer.

Why is it indicated what exactly for this type of fish? It’s simple. Sturgeon is a bottom fish, and therefore it picks up food from the bottom. Accordingly, it should sink in water, but at the same time retain its appearance for at least half an hour, without getting wet or decomposing. Also, different ages and sizes are supposed to have their own type of feed. (You may also be interested in information about what (composition of feed for laying hens)

Food for sturgeon fish: daily rate

The diet for sturgeon should be nutritious and properly balanced, high in lipids (fats), protein (proteins), rich in simple and complex carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. The food should taste good, smell, be easily digested and digested by fish. For feeding, ready-made balanced pelleted feeds are sold, which already contain all the necessary nutrients and trace elements in their composition. When feeding with ready-made feed, it is very important to choose the right proportion and dimensions of the granules. For example, the proportions depend on the size and weight of the fish, on the water temperature (the optimum temperature is 19-24 ° C). The daily diet of sturgeon for adults is 15-25% of the mass of fish in a pond or pool. They begin to feed the larvae 3-4 days after they emerge from the eggs; for this, live food is prepared. at the rate of 30-50% of the fry weight. The diet these days consists of finely chopped: daphnia, oligochaetes, tubifex or brine shrimp. When the underyearlings grow up to 30-40 grams, they begin to actively feed them: every 30 minutes during the day, and every hour at night. After gaining weight more than 35-40 g, fry begin to accustom themselves to starter feeds in the amount of 60-70% of the fish weight (ST-07, OPK or feed for trout RGM-6M, carp RK-S, Equizo). The size of granules of compound feed for sturgeon fingerlings should not exceed 0.3-2.0 mm. During feeding, it is necessary to check the eatability of food every two hours and remove any leftovers so that the pools are not contaminated and the oxygen level in them is correct. When breeding fish in cages or home pools, they are sorted every 10 days. large fish are sorted out from smaller ones. When the sturgeon reaches a mass of 70 grams, it is transferred to high-quality feed. the size of the granules should be 2.5; 4.5 and 6 mm. You can prepare fish food with your own hands in the form of a doughy mass, which includes: minced fish, fish, krill, meat and bone, blood meal, Premix PF-1V, yeast, egg powder. At home, you can start breeding silkworms, brine shrimp, growing chlorella or spirulina as a food supplement to the diet. The daily norm of self-prepared food for sturgeon underyearlings weighing about 20 grams is 6-15% of the total weight of the fish and is given every 8-12 hours. Larger fish are fed with ready-made mixed feed 5-6 times a day for quick weight gain. Feeding can be done with automatic feeders or manually. In the pond, the diet is reduced up to 2-3 times, since fish in a natural reservoir additionally eat zooplankton and phytoplankton, which is contained in the aquatic environment

How to grow in RAS

A closed-type installation or recirculation system is one of the most optimal options for growing sturgeon. Represents several pools, which are equipped with filters, a system of regular water renewal. The last point is very important, since it is necessary to give the fish a certain amount of oxygen. Such installations help to maintain an optimal climate in the water all year round.

The video shows how to organize a RAS system:

For such containers, the density of the planting in water should also be taken into account. So it is necessary to limit the mass of individuals to 60 kg per 1 sq. M.

Sturgeon feeding recommendations

To make quality food for sturgeon on your own, you need to make some efforts, namely:

  • Calculate the balance of nutritional components in the composition, primarily proteins.
  • Add high-quality and inexpensive fishmeal (for example, included in compound feed)
  • Add vitamins and microelements to the compound feed in the optimal amount and of the required quality so that they do not dissolve in water before the fish eats them.
  • Select vegetable fats for compound feed with the required balance of polyunsaturated acids. For rapid growth, sturgeon needs fatty compound feed, with m lipids from 18%.
  • During production, it is necessary to maintain cleanliness and monitor the quality of the raw materials so that the finished product turns out to be safe.

Homemade compound feed is stored for no more than two months.

The easiest way to prepare food is using minced trash fish, pork feed or bran. In the recirculation system, such compound feed will greatly pollute the water, therefore it is better to use it in natural reservoirs. By consuming compound feed prepared in this way, the fish will grow more slowly, but the quality of the caviar will be good. Fish tastes more natural.

Growing sturgeon at home

How to grow in a pond

The first stage usually uses a pool or pond. The depth on average fluctuates between 1-1.2 m, but the diameter should be at least 1.5-2.5 m. For such dimensions of the pool, with a sufficient application of forces, you can get up to 1 ton of fish.

For the process to really go by leaps and bounds, you should take care of the appropriate equipment. Filtration with aeration must be established without fail. As the container becomes dirty, it is necessary to clean it. To do this with minimal stress for sturgeons, you need a filter, compressor, pump. If possible, you can additionally purchase an auto feeder, which will significantly save time.

Sturgeon is a shy fish, while its stress resistance is extremely low. Therefore, it is necessary to implement the most optimal conditions for its growth so that it grows and develops as fully as possible. It is known that if a fish is frightened, it even refused to feed.

When choosing a pump and compressor, attention is paid to the volumes that they are capable of handling according to their technical characteristics. In terms of indicators, it is better to take with a margin, since this will not allow the equipment to work at its limit. As a result, you will not need to frequently change these elements.

If desired, a pond or pool at the initial stage of breeding can be done by hand. At first, one reservoir will be enough, and then it will be possible to increase the number of containers. It is quite difficult to get sturgeon fry (a female in captivity gives offspring only for 6 years of life, and in the wild. starting from 12 years). Therefore, you can simply purchase them from fish farms that breed these individuals. In this case, you should not save on the purchase. The higher the quality of the offspring, the more chances to get the maximum profit.

Sturgeon fry for breeding at home must be large enough

Before putting fry into a pond or pool, the bottom is lined with lime. Then it is washed and cleaned. At the end, purified water must be collected: if from the water supply, then it should first be passed through a simple carbon filter to get rid of the chlorine residues.

In the case of a pond, it is also necessary to plant the necessary algae, mollusks, worms, green fertilizers and other representatives of aquatic flora and fauna in it in 1.5-2 months. In this case, the bottom of the reservoir should be in the shape of a bowl. Such an environment will only contribute to the healthy development of fish, and in the future will also help reproduction.

The video shows sturgeon breeding in the pond:

Fry is populated in summer or late spring. It is better to land at night to reduce stress for individuals. When the fish reaches an average size, part of it is resettled in a separate reservoir, since large individuals absorb food more and do not allow smaller sturgeons to develop. You can create a spawning pond, where individuals of a slightly larger than average size will be resettled. After a while, eggs and fry are caught and planted in separate aquariums and the process begins anew.

Before settling fish in the pond, take care of its wintering place. The optimum temperature for development and normal nutrition is 22-24 degrees, which must be maintained all year round. At a temperature of 10 degrees, growth slows down noticeably.

Plant feed

Vegetable food for aquarium fish can be prepared from vegetables, herbs, a loaf or cereals that contain vegetable fiber. It is perfect for herbivorous fish. It is necessary to feed the fish in small portions, which they will master in 3-5 minutes. Uneaten food remains must be removed promptly. Vegetable food recipes:

  • Semolina. Take 1 tbsp. Semolina and pour boiling water over it, let it simmer for 20 minutes. Rinse the resulting mixture and serve the fish in small portions.
  • Use a stale white loaf (no mildew). Crumble it up and give the fish a little.
  • Cooked vegetables: carrots, broccoli, zucchini, zucchini. They should be boiled, cut, washed. Give in small amounts.
  • Grind oatmeal flakes in a blender and boil in boiling water. Rinse the resulting mixture.
  • Protein and plant foods for aquarium fish can be served as cocktails or mixtures, adding protein and plant foods in different amounts to the “dish”. You can prepare special recipes. For example, if you take crushed dry nettle leaves, dried daphnia, mix them, and give them as a nutritious food.

    See How To Make Semolina Feed.

    Protein types of feed

    Protein food for aquarium fish can be fed as a substitute for dry and live foods. It has nutritional properties and is much cheaper. You can cook it yourself at home.

    • Beef heart. Grind in a frozen kitchen grater. Give a small portion for the fish every few days. No need to rinse before serving.
    • Chicken egg. It is a nutritious food not only for fish, but also for their fry. Pour the raw egg into a bowl, stir with whisking movements. Boil water and pour it a little into the resulting consistency. Stir when infusing. The cooked egg must be caught with a net, and fed to the fish in small portions. You can serve hard-boiled yolk to the fish by grinding it on a grater or in a blender. No need to salt.

    Fish, fresh frozen. It should be grated or minced. Place the prepared minced meat in small bowls that can be stored in the freezer for a long time. Before serving the product, it must be defrosted at room to, and feed the fish, giving small portions.

  • Boiled fish. The recipe is the same as for fresh frozen. Better to give lean fish, cod will do.
  • Shrimp and krill. Boil, cool, finely chop and rinse.
  • Boiled milk film. It should be given to the fish in small portions.
  • When making your own protein feed, do not add salt or other spices to it. Serve such food in small portions, and remove leftovers from the tank immediately. Protein foods are nutritious but deteriorate quickly, degrade in water, and cause bacterial outbreaks in the water, which can have negative consequences. Protein food is very beneficial for predatory fish.

    See How To Make Fish Food.

    How to breed live food at home

    How to grow live cultures for fish:

    • Don’t overdo it on nutrients. If you feed a crop strongly, it will begin to multiply rapidly. This will lead to the death of its part due to oxygen deficiency and intoxication with its own waste products.
    • Change water regularly in containers where live feed is bred.
    • You cannot keep the entire culture in one container. If part of it dies, the other can be restored in a reserve jig.

    Daphnia is a microscopic crustacean found in stagnant water bodies. It is better to get daphnia in ponds where fish are not found, so there will be a low probability of introducing an infection into the aquarium. Dip the caught daphnia into infused water with good aeration. Change a fifth of the water to fresh water every day. The lighting should be dim. Recommended keeping temperature: 22-25 ° C.

    You can feed crustaceans with yeast, which is taken in a portion of a pea, diluted in a spoonful of water, and a portion is added to the water. If the water becomes cloudy, it’s okay. Daphnia can also be fed with cabbage, carrot, beet juice. a teaspoon per 5 liters of water. Crustaceans are very useful for aquariums. they quickly clear them of water blooms. In winter, they serve as food for fry.

    Drosophila flies. it is very easy to breed because they are found in every home where there is a spoiled product. To dilute them, place the puree fruit mixed with yeast and oatmeal in a covered glass jar. The first insects will crawl out after 3 days, and after a week they will be enough for feeding the fish.

    DIY fish food

    Rules for feeding with natural feed

    Natural food is food of natural origin (insect larvae, plankton, benthos, plants and algae, molluscs and crustaceans). All food served to the fish should be medium-sized so that it can be taken by the mouth. Fish fry and juveniles must be fed more live and dry food in order to grow beautiful and healthy. Before spawning, males and females are also given live food with protein, which serves as an additional stimulation for spawning.

    Take a look at feeding goldfish worms.

    Adult goldfish prefer plant food more. Please note that it is better to feed young animals with daphnia, bloodworms, tubule, corotra, squid pieces, dry ami. By the way, adult fish should also receive this food, but in smaller quantities. It is easy to prepare food for adults with your own hands and at home. Take a kitchen grater and grate cucumbers, zucchini, carrots, pumpkin on a fine surface. You can freeze it in the freezer, and later defrost it (only once!), And give it to pets.

    If you are going on vacation and there is no one to leave the fish with, then plants with soft leaves (including duckweed) will be an excellent food for hungry pets. It will be enough for goldfish for one week, they are unlikely to lose weight, but do not overdo it with vacation. Consider the moment that they remember the owner, and a long absence of a person can also cause stress.

    Now about the products from our refrigerator that are suitable for feeding. For these fish, cereals such as semolina, buckwheat, peas, millet are not alien. They must be free of salt and boiled in water. All types of goldfish love peas. peel them, boil them, grind them in a blender and serve in small portions. It has a beneficial effect on the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. These types of dressings can be served if the fish food has run out at home, or for a more varied diet. Semolina must be washed, non-sticky texture, otherwise the fish will not be able to eat it.

    As food for this fish, spinach, nettle, lettuce, dandelion, dill or parsley leaves are suitable. Surprisingly, this pet has almost everything that a person is used to, which is why it is so popular with novice aquarists! Do not forget that these fish are avid eaters, prone to overeating. Feed them 2 times a day in small portions that they can consume in 5 minutes. Give animal and live food once a day, and plant food the rest of the time.

    You can alternate the types of food, and make a menu: give live food several times a week (30% of the diet), and 70% vegetable. After a meal, fish leave behind a lot of waste in the form of feces. This means that the aquarium needs to be cleaned on time: bottom siphon and water filtration. Replace 25% of the water once a week with fresh and clean water so that food debris does not decompose, contaminating everything around.

    Watch goldfish eat lettuce.

    How to cook delicious food for fish

    If you are serious about your fish, you must take care of feeding them properly. Ideally, aquatic pets should be fed live, protein and plant foods. At home, you can do it yourself if you know some of the rules for its preparation. By combining all types of food for aquarium fish, you will provide them with a complete diet.

    What and how many times a day to feed goldfish

    When you have settled such wonderful pets as goldfish in your home aquarium, the question immediately arises: “How and what to feed these cute creatures?” In fact, feeding your fish in an aquarium is not difficult. Firstly, this is an omnivorous species of fish, and secondly, when the pets get used to the owner, they can be given food with their own hands.

    Branded fish food

    In addition to natural food, goldfish can be fed with branded foods. Manufacturers offer various supplements with vitamins, minerals, fiber, larvae and other nutrients. Branded food helps to give the fish a brighter color of the scales; they are harmless in acceptable quantities. It is better to give branded food 1-2 times a week, although some types can be done more often. All of them are presented in the form of chips, granules, sticks.

  • Everything about feeding fish

    Errors in feeding aquarium inhabitants are the main cause of their diseases with subsequent death. To avoid mistakes in this responsible process, you should thoroughly study what the representatives of this species of underwater fauna eat in the wild. Many of them are omnivorous, that is, their diet may include:

    • Decaying organic matter;
    • The simplest;
    • Underwater plants;
    • Worms and insects;
    • Representatives of other fish species;
    • Snails and crustaceans;
    • Chopped fruits, vegetables, etc.

    This, of course, makes the task easier, but among the fish you have purchased, there will certainly be those that have live food in priority or, on the contrary, vegetable food, which means they should be fed accordingly.

    The specific question of how much food should be given to the inhabitants of the aquarium requires a specific answer, and the conventional opinion that it is better to underfeed rather than overfeed your wards is fundamentally wrong.

    In fact, both one and the other are harmful to your aquarium pets. Systemically overfed fish will die sooner than those who are constantly undernourished. that makes all the difference.

    First. Reduce the amount of food if your charges, after a short time after feeding, without being active, crowd at the surface, and the water becomes cloudy.

    Second. With obvious weight loss of pets, their lethargy, underfeeding is evident. Increase the portion or feed the pets not 2, but 3 times.

    Third. Keep track of the time the fish consume food: with a balanced diet, it will take the inhabitants of your home water from 5 to 15 minutes to eat all or almost all of the food.

    Adequacy of food for all fish in the reservoir requires special attention. There may be those in the aquarium who are weakened or less active by nature, so they can be constantly undernourished if you do not pay enough attention to this.

    Feeding on the crumbs left over from other fish, such fish will soon, completely weakened, die.

    The food of your wards should contain all the necessary components for their successful growth, development and reproduction:

    • Proteins;
    • Carbohydrates;
    • Fats;
    • Vitamins;
    • Trace elements.

    For the cultivation of daphnia, it is enough to get a few individuals from the wild. They live in various nearby reservoirs. It is better to catch them in the summer season, since warm-water forms do not require cool water and are easier to care for. Most often, crustaceans can be found in well-warmed shallow waters. Their sizes vary depending on the species. females of large species reach 6 mm, and small ones up to 2 mm.

    The crustaceans are placed in an enamel, glass or plastic vessel. It is important to remember that daphnia are sensitive to oxygen in the water, so the surface area should be wide. It will not be superfluous to provide the cultivator with aeration.

    Daphnia are cultivated in aquarium water, the temperature of which should be 20-28 ° C. It is better to avoid sudden temperature jumps, as these cladocerans are extremely sensitive to them.

    Daphnia is fed with baker’s yeast diluted in warm water. For 1 liter of water should account for 1-3 g. Feeding is carried out 2-3 times a week. However, you can focus on the water in the cultivator. if there is turbidity and an unpleasant odor, then the amount of feed must be reduced. If the water began to quickly become transparent, on the contrary, increase.

    Every day you need to catch the number of crustaceans necessary for feeding the fish, and once a week change a third of the water.

    In order to get daphnia eggs, it is necessary to lower the temperature of the water and increase its frequency up to several times a day. The crustaceans will prepare for hibernation and lay eggs in their shells that can tolerate long periods without moisture. They are kept dry, preferably together with river sand. In order for them to hatch, it is enough to add warm water.

    Daphnia eggs are even sent by mail. This method is popular in the northern regions in which these crustaceans are not found.

    Self-cultivation of live food

    Culinary delights are not all that a caring owner can do with his own hands for his beloved pets. As noted above, live food should be present in the diet of aquarium fish as the main source of protein.

    But there is always a risk, along with live food, to bring pathogens of fish diseases into your home reservoir. Therefore, it makes sense to grow your own zooplankton for your pets. This is troublesome at first glance, but it protects against contamination of the aquarium water. So, it’s decided. we grow.

    DIY fish food

    When breeding aquarium fish, the problem of feeding them becomes almost the main problem. This whole process for a novice aquaurist is fraught with a number of questions: what is the best way to feed the pets? How often should this be done, in what quantity? Is it possible to cook food for fish with your own hands?

    It is generally known that this is the simplest dish in terms of cooking technology, for which you just need an egg and a pot of water.

    Method of preparation: break the egg into a cup, stir it intensively, pour it into boiling water. Cook, stirring occasionally for about a minute. Fish omelet is ready.

    We feed the crushed omelet to the fish in small portions, making sure that the pets eat everything at once (the water should remain clear). Such food is stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

    For this case, there are ways to feed the aquarium wards by making their own meals. So, consider a few recipes for fish dishes that you can really cook with your own hands at home.

    Feed mix

    Another suitable home food option for any hobbyist, prepared with many ingredients, is a shelf-stable mix. Its composition can be different, here we offer one of them:

    • Low-fat fish;
    • Squid;
    • Fish roe;
    • Pre-cooked egg;
    • Yeast;
    • Powdered milk;
    • Loaf of rusks;
    • Underwater plants;
    • Shoots of nettle, dandelion, plantain scalded with boiling water;
    • Sweet peppers with intense red hues (brightens the color of fish).

    The listed ingredients are chopped in arbitrary proportions in a convenient way (with a knife, in a meat grinder or blender), supplemented with multivitamins according to the instructions. Everything is thoroughly mixed, laid out in a dosage convenient for feeding into prepared molds, frozen.

    The food can be offered to fish both frozen and thawed. Freshly cut greens or chopped fresh green peas may well serve as a side dish.

    This variant of zooplankton, which has a high level of natural adaptation, is valuable for its nutritional value and is especially often used when rearing fry. To breed brine shrimp nauplii for fry, you will need:

    • Salt solution in the proportion of 20 g per ½ liter of water;
    • Her dried eggs are half a teaspoon;
    • 0.75 L jar with lid;

    The contents of the vessel must be kept at a constant temperature. Its higher level ensures accelerated hatching of crustaceans. The whole process takes 20-40 hours and proceeds as follows:

    • The container is filled with a saline solution (brine) with a temperature of 24-30 ° C;
    • Eggs are sprayed there;
    • Clogged with a lid with a pair of openings for tubes, through one of which oxygen is supplied, and through the other, air outflow is provided;
    • The appearance of nauplii (larvae) marks the end of the process, they are filtered through a fine mesh, washed with water.

    Fry food is ready!

    I want to end with a wish: feed your pets correctly and fully, spare no effort, time to create a healthy diet, and they will delight you with bright colors, active, cheerful behavior and, of course, their offspring.

    Features of the process of feeding aquarium fish: dry branded food, as well as the necessary additives of plant and animal origin.

    The vast majority of diseases and deaths in our domestic fish are due to inadequate feeding. The trouble is that a novice amateur sometimes does not even understand the importance and responsibility for his actions in matters of feeding.

    Fry feeding

    You can grow daphnia yourself without any problems. In addition to forage problems, daphnia is also of interest for observations. Especially for fry, it is advisable to have several cans of rotifers. For very small fry, amateurs “keep at hand” ciliates.

    Use yogurt as additional food for the fry. Some hobbyists cultivate enchitreus at home. It’s pretty easy to maintain. To enrich the worm with vitamins, it is necessary to add vegetable waste, etc., to its nutrition. Feeding fish with enchitreus can cause obesity, therefore, like any other, this type of food must be alternated.

    Dry food

    The biggest and most common mistake is feeding fish with dry food. Hungry fish pounce on such food, swallow it. Further, this food in the stomach begins to rot. A very small part of it is absorbed, the rest gets into the water and changes its chemistry. The more dry food you feed, the faster the water deteriorates. Unnecessary organisms develop. High quality dry branded food contains almost all the elements necessary for fish, but you need to use them carefully.

    The second mistake is monotonous food. With all the variety and availability of all kinds of food, a novice amateur feeds his pets with the same food every day. The choice of food is very large, a skillful combination and alternation of them will allow you to grow healthy fish and focus on more interesting aspects of the life of the underwater kingdom.

    Do not forget that fish are mainly predators, very few of them are species that feed exclusively on plant foods.

    Live food

    Live food is necessary for fish during the spawning period. Receiving a hefty portion of bloodworms, tubifex, fish are more willing to spawn. Malek raised on live food is resilient and less susceptible to diseases in the future.

    Much has been written about the dangers of the tubifex. In fact, this harm is greatly exaggerated. The pipe maker can contain anything, but there are some simple ways to clean it. To clean the tubule, it is enough to rinse it two to three times a day for a week. When it becomes pink, you can safely give it to fish. Some amateurs “soak” the tubifex in milk, which also needs to be changed.

    It is worth dwelling on the storage of live feed. The tubing is stored on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator in a wide and low container with a little water, changed daily. Bloodworms can be kept between two wet wipes. Photo cuvettes can be used as dishes.

    It is advisable to feed both bloodworms and tubifex through special feeders. Snack food remains in the trough, and live food comes out through small holes into the aquarium. When tapped, a good quality tubule instantly “curls up” into a ball. When buying, you need to pay attention to its appearance. It is not recommended to store live food for a long time.

    Secrets of feeding aquarium fish. Vegetable feed

    It is good to use cereals as vegetable feed. Before using them, pour boiling water over the cereals and cool, feed. With great pleasure many carp, catfish, cichlids eat semolina.

    Keeping a large number of fish requires a well-balanced and inexpensive feed.

    Any heat treatment, as a rule, reduces the value of the product, therefore, the components in the preparation of minced meat are used mainly raw.

    • Vitamins. Tablets for 1 kg of minced meat. Sometimes I take vitamin D in oil from the pharmacy and moisten the minced meat pieces with it a little before feeding.
    • Iodized salt. At the tip of a knife. Compensates for iodine deficiency.

    It is undesirable to use in minced meat

    • Bird.
    • Meat of warm-blooded animals. When feeding fish with beef, choose lean meat.
    • River fish. Possible poisoning, parasites.
    • Herbs and plants used in medicine. The effect of their use can lead to very sad and unpredictable consequences.

    The minced meat components are washed, mixed and chopped in any available way (meat grinder, mixer). For an aquarium with large fish, grinding the ingredients with a knife is fine.

    Put the finished mass in a plastic bag and roll it into a layer with your hands Store in the freezer.

    Before feeding, break off the required amount and after thawing, place it in the aquarium. You can throw frozen pieces without thawing.

    True, if you have bottom fish, they can lose their lunch because K. Ice does not sink in water and as it thaws all food can be eaten by other fish.

    Gelatin and agar-agar are used as binding elements. In addition, you can pour the minced meat with a strong broth obtained after boiling the bones.

    • 1kg blue whiting (in our market this is one of the cheapest sea fish).
    • 200 g squid. They must first be cleaned.
    • Bag of dry branded food.
    • A tablespoon of dry nettles.
    • One raw egg.

    We pass fish and squid through a meat grinder twice. Add dry food, nettle, egg. Mix thoroughly. Minced meat is ready.

    Theoretically, you can store minced meat at a low temperature in the freezer for quite a long time. In fact, the activity of certain substances and their suitability for feeding fish can vary greatly. It is advisable to make a volume that is completely eaten by fish in a week.

    The amount of feed given is determined experimentally. Feed in small portions, observing the fish’s reaction. It is better if the fish is a little undernourished. Leftover feed should not lie on the bottom. The frequency of feeding depends on the age of the fish. Fry is fed more often, adult fish will only need one or two times a day.

    Much has been written about the benefits of fasting for humans, all this is true for fish. Rest is essential to the gastrointestinal tract. During fasting, the body is cleansed. Sick fish is recovering faster, and newly acquired fish is better acclimatized. Go on a full hunger strike once a week. The exception is fry, which needs food all the time.

    An adult fish can starve for a week without visible damage.
