How GPS tracker for dogs works

How the GPS Collar Works

The GPS beacon in the collar works as follows. It connects to satellites and transmits location coordinates to the mobile application, which will be displayed on the smartphone if the Internet is available.

Some collars combine GPS with radio signals to transmit information to the intended receiver. Most integrate GPS with communications networks (LBS) by sending information to your computer or mobile device. Therefore, for a successful search, the dog must be within the coverage area of your network.

You can see the history of movements reported by the device to see where your dog or cat has gone. Some of the GPS trackers for dogs even send an alert to your phone when your four-legged friend leaves a pre-set area (geo-fence, geo-zone, or virtual fence).

To work with such an accessory, as we have already mentioned, you will need to install special software on a smartphone or laptop, but in other cases, there may be a transmitter (remote control) in the kit, on the display of which you can view all the necessary information.

tracker, dogs, works

There are models that provide for tracking an animal and work with a smartphone and with a remote control.

What is a GPS tracker and how does it work?

Why do you need a GPS tracker in a collar for pet dogs, if you can walk with them without letting them off the leash? Then, that you need to give the animal the opportunity to use freedom of movement, without fear of losing it.

When you go to the forest, hike, hunting or just for a walk with your pet and it gets lost from sight, the GPS sensor for the dog built into the collar can send information about the location of the pet to the owner’s smartphone or laptop. Now this technology is often used not only by ordinary dog owners, but also by professionals, hunters and even scientists.

Additional functions in GPS collars

A GPS dog collar may have a number of additional features in addition to tracking the pet’s location.

Communication types in GPS collars

Basically, the new collar models use A-GPS technology. This type of technology improves the time it takes to actually find your dog after turning on the device. Regular GPS only uses satellite signals, which usually take about 30 seconds, but can take up to 12 minutes in areas where open-air transmission is limited. A-GPS also depends on network resources. It only takes a second in good conditions and two to three minutes in bad conditions: which makes a big difference when tracking your lost dog.

A-GPS also allows you to locate your pet indoors. If your pet is within four walls, the collar sensor is unlikely to receive a regular GPS signal. Therefore, if your dog is in someone’s house, simple GPS will not help you find it. A-GPS will probably do it, although it is usually limited to areas where your cell phone receives reception.

WAAS-GPS is a wide range system. It has better accuracy than standard GPS. But when the latter detects your dog within 9 meters, WAAS will do so within 3 meters.WAAS is not as fast as A-GPS in fixing the location.

Shape, weight and limitations

The collar tracker can become too heavy for a small dog or, for example, a cat. For example, a 300-gram tracker will become an unbearable burden for a 1-kg dog, but will be familiar to a dog whose weight reaches 20 kg or more.

The case must be strong so that when hitting a stone or concrete floor, the gadget does not split. Most of the collar trackers are not designed to be immersed in water, only rain and accidental splash protection. If your dog is swimming, you need to take special precautions to protect USB ports or electronic components. But on sale you can find a special GPS collar for hunting dogs. It is sealed and waterproof.

Tracker attachment also plays an important role. Shaking the dog while jumping, rubbing against the ground or grabbing onto bushes may cause the device to jump off and be lost. And in this case, you will only find the tracker, but not the pet.

Consider the permissible ambient temperature when using the collar in your environment. After all, if the temperature is too low or too high, the GPS navigator for dogs can shorten the battery life or the device will fail altogether.

TOP collars with positioning system

Today, on the electronic gadget market, you can find a lot of options for smart dog collars with a positioning system. But which one is better to choose? We offer you to consider the top 3 models that are the most popular and demanded among the owners of four-legged friends.

Working hours

The battery is an important part of the gadget and can cause a real problem if it sits down in the event of a loss of your dog. Battery life depends on:

  • signal frequency for transmission of location data
  • battery capacity
  • receiver distance

When buying a GPS dog collar, pay attention to the battery life range, both at rest and during data transfer. And, of course, you need to make sure that the GPS tag is always charged before going out with your pet for a walk.

Popular models of trackers for dogs and cats

Consider several modifications of trackers that are most popular among pet owners.

Basic parameters when choosing a GPS tracker for an animal

The earliest such devices to appear on the smart technology market were conventional radio collars. Included with them was a remote control that received a radio signal from a sensor mounted in the collar. Such models have a limited communication range, depending on the distance and the presence of obstacles in the form of houses or terrain.

A further step in the development of trackers was the appearance of models with a GSM module, which significantly expanded their coverage area. Modern devices allow you to receive data about the location of a pet directly to a mobile device. a smartphone or laptop. The trackers themselves have become more miniature and lightweight, without causing discomfort even for young kittens.

When choosing an animal tracking device, it is recommended to pay attention to a number of parameters. On the market there are modifications designed specifically for cats and dogs. Cat collars with sensors are small in size and are primarily intended for locating an animal. There are two types of dog trackers:

  • Complete GPS dog collar with built-in electronic module. He is able not only to transmit the coordinates of the location of the dog, but also to serve to keep him on a leash.
  • A separate tracker attached to the dog’s collar while walking. Equipped with the same set of functions, but can be removed from the collar while the dog is at home.

In addition, when choosing a tracking device for an animal, it is recommended to pay attention to the following criteria:

  • Method of signal transmission with coordinates: radio wave or via GSM.
  • Signal level, range.
  • Built-in memory to track the path of the animal.
  • The need to purchase a special SIM card.
  • The presence of a special SMS-chip in the design.
  • Presence / absence of SOS alarm button.
  • The level of protection of the device from moisture, dust, mechanical damage.
  • The ability to issue voice commands, or establish two-way communication.
  • The duration of the device without additional recharging.

After that, the owner of the tracker gets the opportunity to control his pet in 150 countries of the world, without charging additional roaming charges. Therefore, the purchase of this device will be extremely beneficial for those who like to travel a lot with their dog or cat excluding payment of the tariff.

Mobile apps that support GPS tracker data

To be able to remotely monitor the movement of your pet through a smartphone, you need to install a special mobile application on it. With its help, the signals received from the GPS tracker for animals will be converted and displayed on the display of a smartphone or tablet.

For various modifications of trackers, manufacturers release their own mobile applications that allow you to make the most of all the capabilities of the device. For example, for the Tractive line of GPS collars, a special application Tractive GPS PetFinder has been created. It gives the user the following options:

  • Locate an animal.
  • See the history of his movements.
  • Establish a virtual restriction zone.

Features of choosing a GPS collar for hunting dogs

There is a large selection of GPS dog collars on the market today, marketed as specially designed for hunting dogs. They are like the rest of the trackers. have great differences in the proposed functionality. Therefore, when choosing them, experts advise paying special attention to several factors:

  • A device for receiving a signal. In difficult taiga or field conditions, the most practical option would be to send the signal to a dedicated remote control rather than to a smartphone. Such transmitting and receiving consoles are more resistant to external aggressive influences: to dampness, to shock, to pollution.
  • Range of action. When choosing a device that works via a GSM module, the range will be limited only by the coverage area of the cellular network. When buying a tracker with radio communication, you must consider the maximum signal range. The indicators indicated in the technical characteristics, in fact, may turn out to be much more modest. The radio transmission range in the forest will be much shorter than in the field due to interference from trees.
  • The level of protection against dust and moisture. Being in the wilderness implies a much greater external load on the tracker. These are possible shocks, contact with water in the rain, or when the dog overcomes water obstacles, dust and dirt. Therefore, for hunting dogs, you should choose devices with the maximum level of security of electronic filling.
  • The ability to issue voice commands. With the help of the speaker built into the collar, the hunter will be able to call back a dog that has gone too far in a fit of hunting excitement. Also, a specially trained hunting dog, with the help of such a remote control, will be able to perform other actions.

How GPS Animal Tracker Works?

At its core, the tracker is a mobile transmitting device with a positioning module in the GPS or GLONASS system. Receiving a satellite signal, he establishes his position, transmitting the coordinates to the owner of the animal. They are accepted on a special remote control chartplotter, or on a mobile device with a program installed on it.

Data is transmitted via GSM-communication channel, or using radio waves. Thanks to this, theoretically, it is possible to track the location of a pet with a tracker collar from anywhere in the world. If only he was in the range of global positioning satellites and could receive cellular signals. Some modifications have a built-in speaker in their design, through which the owner can transmit commands to the pet. For example, when the dog is too far away for a walk or hunting, he may order it to go back.

Various modifications of GPS trackers are equipped with a different set of functions. With their help you can:

  • Determine the exact location of the animal.
  • Trace the path of its movement in recent times.
  • Give voice commands from a great distance from the animal.
  • Using the “SOS” function, people who find a lost pet will be able to inform its owner about it.
  • Establish the boundaries of the territory for walking the animal. When crossing this virtual border, the smart device will alert the owner.

In general, the use of a GPS tracker for animals allows you to increase their safety, reduce the likelihood of their loss during walks.

Jet Pet Doggy GPS Tracker Review: Pet in Control

Every owner wants to know where his dog is walking. After all, even the most educated dogs can sometimes run away on their personal business without warning. And it doesn’t matter if it is found in 5 minutes or in a few hours, the owner’s gray hair during this time can significantly increase. Especially for such cases, the Jet Pet Doggy GPS tracker for dogs was invented. Attach the box to the dog’s collar, connect it to the mobile application in your smartphone and you’re done. you can see on the map where your pet is in real time.

The package includes the tracker itself, two mounts for different collar thicknesses (1 and 4 mm) and widths up to 2.5 cm, charger and instructions in Russian.

GPS Pet Tracker. Tractive Long Term Review. Professional Dog Training Tips

The tracker is compact and quite light, about 30 g. For very small breeds, such as Chihuahuas and Yorkies, it will still be too big, but for dachshunds, spaniels, corgi and larger ones. quite. The mount snaps into place on the collar (or a simple harness) and is not easy to remove, so the dog is unlikely to be able to lose it, wherever it is worn. And even if the pet decides to swim for a walk, it’s also not scary. the tracker body is protected from water and dust according to the IP67 standard.

The tracker will need a micro SIM card with 2G support, it is external and is not included in the package. In general, it is even convenient. you do not have to pay for a third-party subscription and you can choose a convenient operator. We advise you to choose from the usual MTS, Beeline, Megafon, any tariff from the series “for smart things”. The cost of such tariffs is usually about 100 rubles / month.

Next, download the free My JetPet application, there is for Android or iOS, create an account, register the tracker in it using a QR code and select convenient cards (Yandex, Google, special phones). The registration process is not complicated, the application is completely in Russian.

If necessary, the tracker can be connected to multiple users by configuring guest access.

Geolocation is determined by GPS and GLONASS, for even greater accuracy there is also the Yandex.Locator LBS service. But you need to keep in mind that the signal inside the premises is still weaker than on the street, so there may be errors in accurately determining the location in the building.

The main function of the tracker is to see on the map where your dog is.

The automatic data update mode fixes the location on the map at intervals of 1/30/60 seconds to choose from. In addition, you can set up a safe zone, the so-called “virtual fence”, then when the dog leaves this zone, you will receive a notification on your phone.

The battery will last for 2-3 days on average, depending on the selected geolocation update frequency. When the battery is low, the tracker will also send a notification to the phone.

Another interesting feature that deserves special attention is that you can call the tracker like a regular phone, it has a microphone and a speaker. For example, you can give the dog a command or talk to the person who found it over the speakerphone. The second option is to request a callback from your smartphone and listen to what is happening around the dog. In this case, your voice will not be heard on the tracker itself.

The Jet Pet Doggy GPS tracker is an extremely useful device for all dog owners and their pets. The use of the tracker has its own peculiarities: for example, the dog will need to be taught in advance to the sounds and your voice from the speaker. At the same time, the tracker performs its main functions stably and it is quite simple to use it, and in the event of a pet’s flight, the gadget can simplify the process of finding it and save the owner a lot of nerves.

Testing on office rats

After a short charge (the device charges up to 100% in three hours, but for the test we limited ourselves to half an hour of charging), we checked the signal from the satellites in the office.

For the first, more complex case, we entered a walled corridor. We open the application, look at the map. and after 10 seconds we get the following picture:

Yeah, not bad! As you can see, Mishiko did not catch the GPS signal through the walls, but showed the device’s location based on information from the cell towers (the so-called LBS positioning). We checked with the iPhone and got the same picture. in buildings, the GPS signal, no matter how you dance with a tambourine, will not be:

For comparison: a screenshot of Yandex.Maps inside the same room

There are so many cell towers in the city center that the accuracy turned out to be high: exactly in the center of the “approximate” location we are. If you go out of town, the error can be about 500 meters, but only until the device again catches data from GPS satellites.

We continue the experiments: we go to the window in the office, open the map in the application. Yeah, it’s more interesting!

GPS is working, the location is displayed by one “point” on the map. Meter to meter! For the purity of the experiment, we go outside and again see a working GPS.

It’s time to move to the dog 🙂 But it’s already tomorrow!

Animal testing: how the Mishiko GPS tracker for dogs works?

Hi Geektimes! We read a lot of Комментарии и мнения владельцев on social networks and here on Geektimes with requests to show real reviews of the GPS tracker and Mishiko activity. We heard them and decided to make a full test drive of the device.

We made the review together with one of the first users of Mishiko. Irina and her luxurious Cane Corso named Angel. The guys followed the project from the very start, and kindly agreed to help us organize a visual test “in the fields” with them.

Before going to the site with the device, we decided to show you how the tracker works indoors. The Moscow office of Mishiko is located in the book house on Novy Arbat, 21. and it is all the more interesting to show the work of the tracker inside the building.

Oh dog, where are you?

Upon arrival “at the place”, we decided to clarify the data about the dog in the application. There are two options here. The first is to manually enter the breed, weight, height at the withers, age and other parameters. All of them are taken into account when calculating the activity rate for the described dog.

As an express option, you can choose one of the “preset” options: for small, medium and large dogs. I went exactly this way, chose a “large” dog and the device automatically substituted the data almost perfectly accurately: weight 55 kg (in fact. about 53 kg), height at the withers 65 cm (in fact, about 70 cm). You can “tune” the settings manually, but not necessarily. The main thing is to clarify the breed and date of birth.

As I walked from home to the metro, and from the metro to the dog to the test range, the device “counted” the activity points during my own walk. But since I am not a test subject, for the purity of the experiment, we recorded the time and level of activity that Mishiko “counted” while I was carrying him.

So, we started with 2396 points (or 935 meters covered, or 31 minutes of activity). On the clock 12:51.

READ  Do-It-Yourself Harness For Small Breed Dogs

We put the device on the dog. Fortunately, the strap is easily adjustable in length and after a simple adjustment it fit even for Angel’s impressive 56 centimeters neck girth.

I must say that a couple of times during the walk we held Angel by the collar, and nothing foreshadowed trouble: the plastic latch is very strong, and the fabric, although not too thick, is wide enough to withstand even a jerk of very great force.

The “ears” of the device are large and allow you to pass the collar through them without difficulty, and the base is made of aluminum, so there was no need to worry about the reliability of attaching the device to the collar.

The dog reacted completely calmly to the novelty, and, in my opinion, did not feel the additional 40 grams of Mishiko on his neck.

Before starting activity testing, we checked the GPS. We walked on a dog playground in the Nagornaya area, and the device quickly found Angel.

Okay, then we continue to test the activity. How exactly? Yes, like this:

Unlike many bluetooth trackers on the market, Mishiko uses a cellular connection for data transmission. This means that it is not limited to a distance of 10-15 meters. Mishiko is not even limited by the country. sitting in Prague, you can follow the walks of your pet or the Moscow region via a smartphone.

But back to the test. As you can see, we did not spare the dog’s and our own forces and “came off” as it should. The dog ran almost without a break, took away toys, climbed slides and had fun in full.

The clock reads 13:01. Mishiko shows 4469 points (don’t forget, we started from 2396 right away). That is, we “ran” in 10 minutes of the test 2073 points. about 7-8% of the daily value.

It is interesting that we walked on a relatively small area, and although the dog was winding round and round, the distance was really not very long. Judging by Mishiko, we ran about 800 meters in the first 10 minutes. Looks realistic.

The time is already 13:24. We’ve been running for 34 minutes now, and the activity counter shows an already impressive 9522 points. If we subtract our initial “margin of error”, then we have already run 7126 points. This is almost a third of the daily value.!

For the last half hour. as the device shows. the dog has been super active. It is difficult to argue, and it becomes clear from Angel’s face (muzzle?) That a third of the norm, it seems, really ran off:

Judging by the characteristics of the breed and how Angel felt after the walk, he really did a great walk that day.

Two or three such walks a day, and the dog will feel great. By the way, I also walked up to ten out of ten. The owner of the dog says that with Mishiko walks become a real “challenge”: day after day you want to fulfill the daily rate of points. This means. play more and walk longer.

On trial for a GPS tracker

Novosibirsk resident Denis Dorofeev could be jailed for trying to sell portable GPS trackers that he bought for his dogs. According to the resource “TAIGA.info”, during the transaction with the buyer, he was detained by the employees of the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB), and now he is accused under Art. 138.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal traffic in technical means for secretly obtaining information). The most severe punishment for violating it is four years in prison.

According to Denis Dorofeev, he acquired the Mini A8 trackers after neighbors complained about the loud barking of his two dogs living in his apartment when no one else was at home. These trackers have a function for fixing the sound level, and they did their job. they confirmed the fact of loud barking.

At the end of the experiment, Dorofeev refused to use trackers. “We bought special dog collars and stopped using trackers. They don’t show geolocation very well. And so they lay until February 2020, “said his wife Anastasia Dorofeeva.

In the winter of 2020, Denis Dorofeev decided to sell the Mini A8 due to financial difficulties amid the COVID0-19 coronavirus pandemic. However, instead of a real buyer, FSB officers came to the deal.

How was the test purchase

According to Dorofeev, for the sale of trackers, he posted an ad on one of the ad sites (the name was not disclosed), and the next day he received a call from a buyer, with whom Denis wanted to make an appointment at his house. The buyer offered to meet “his friend” in the parking lot of the shopping center.

“He says I have 12 gazelles, and I have a suspicion that two people drive a leftist, they say, can I track them. I say you can, but it shows with an error of 500-600 meters. He gives the money, I give it to my wife. And then: “And I need 12”. I say that I do not have, only two. Apparently, he gave some kind of signal, and the FSB officers immediately came up and took us to the UAZ, ”Denis told the story of his arrest to the portal“ TAIGA.info ”.

Dorofeev said that there were several other people in the car, two of whom were introduced as attesting witnesses. He was offered to write a frank confession on the spot, but Denis refused and demanded to take him to the police station. At the same time, as noted by Dorofeev, while he was in one car, the trackers were in the other. the representatives of the special services did not seize them and did not put them in a bag for evidence.

High quality expertise

FSB specialists carried out an examination of the devices, which the suspect got acquainted with. It says that the Mini A8 trackers are recognized as “special technical devices designed to secretly obtain acoustic information.” The employee who carried out the examination substantiated his conclusions by the fact that the device has “small dimensions” and that there are “no indicators of the operating mode and markings on it”. At the same time, pictures of trackers were attached to the results of the examination, on which their names, the Android OS logo and the SOS button were clearly visible.

Dorofeev filed a petition for a re-examination, for which he was refused by the investigator on the grounds that “the expert’s qualifications were sufficient.” At the time of publication of the material, the threat of imprisonment hung over him.

Impartial investigation

During the interrogation, the citizen of Novosibirsk refused to admit his guilt, in response to which the investigator did not let him familiarize himself with the case. “If you don’t admit your guilt, I’ll also bring my wife, you will have a group of people and a conspiracy,” Dorofeev quotes the portal “TAIGA.info” as the words of the investigator.

FSB jails Russian for GPS trackers for dogs

FSB officers opened a case against the Russian for trying to sell the Mini A8 GPS trackers bought for his dogs. Now he faces four years in prison, and the investigator in charge of this case did not want to attach important evidence to him. After a similar incident and the personal intervention of Vladimir Putin, an amendment was made to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which prohibits accusing sellers of devices like the Mini A8 of violating the Code.

Unexpected consequences

In May 2020, at 4 a.m., the Dorofeevs’ apartment was searched. According to the Novosibirsk resident, the security forces were without masks, despite the height of the coronavirus pandemic, and they did not immediately show an application for a search. In addition, as Denis told “Taiga.info”, they refused to ask him to bring his neighbors as witnesses, saying that “the attesting witnesses will only be ours.”.

During the search, Denis Dorofeev provided the security officials with a package in which the GPS trackers that caused all the problems were sent to him. Then he was taken away for interrogation and brought into the case as a suspect. According to the materials of the case, the investigator of the Zayeltsovsky interdistrict department of the Investigative Committee of Russia (IC) Anton Dzyuba.

A similar case

The Mini A8 tracker appears in another completely similar case, which happened in 2017 with the farmer Evgeny Vasiliev from the Kurgan region. He purchased this device on AliExpress to track his calf, but was also detained on charges of violating Art. 138.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

Vasiliev was able to avoid jail. the President of Russia Vladimir Putin personally ordered the review of his case. As CNews reported, in March 2018, the case against him was dropped.

The consequence of what happened was the appearance in August 2019 in Art. 138.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation of the note stating that spy devices do not include “free circulation” devices “with openly located controls on them or the presence of markings on them indicating their functional purpose.” The Mini A8 tracker fully fits this description.

Thus, Denis Dorofeev could be jailed in spite of the amendment to the article of the Russian Criminal Code, adopted after a high-profile case, to which Vladimir Putin personally reacted.
