What to feed a lactating bitch?

You have been waiting for the birth of puppies for so long, and now, finally, it happened! Your pet has become a mom. Now comes the next very important point. the dog has to feed its puppies. The question is before you; what to feed the lactating bitch? After all, a dog’s body should not lose the necessary resources, and milk for puppies should be nutritious and complete.

After giving birth, the dog may refuse to eat for several days. This is usually due to the fact that the dog eats the placenta and the membranes of the fruit. The placenta is a powerful biostimulant containing substances that stimulate milk production.

After a few days, the dog will return to its normal diet. As the puppies grow, her appetite will increase and the amount of milk produced will also increase. Unfortunately, the owners do not always know what kind of food the dog needs during this period. If in the first days after giving birth, the dog refuses to eat. Offer her low-fat kefir or yogurt, and always water.

The dog feeds the puppies with his milk for 4. 6 weeks. There should be enough protein in the food. Therefore, more than usual, she should eat meat, fish, cottage cheese. Meat, fish or offal in the daily diet should be about 45%, vegetables. 15%, cereals. about 30%, fermented milk products. 10%. Feed the dog every 4 hours, in small portions.

When the dog’s gastrointestinal tract function is restored to normal, vitamin and mineral supplements can be added to the food.

The amount of food consumed by the dog should increase. If in the second week after childbirth the volume of food doubles, then in the third week. three times. It should be said that the amount of food also depends on the number of puppies fed by the bitch.

If the first three weeks the number of mol

You can add grated raw carrots or boiled pumpkin and a little vegetable oil to it. Typically, semi-liquid food is poured onto a baking sheet placed on a slight elevation so that the makeshift table is at the level of the puppies’ chest. It is very important not to overfeed your puppies. If live worms appear in the feces, then repeat the administration of the medicine after 3 days. The day before giving birth, it begins to drop by about a degree. With large litters or when the bitch has little milk, different milk substitutes are used to feed the puppies. During lactation, females need increased doses of vitamins B, A and D. It is necessary to express until the nipples become soft again. Decaris is good because it perfectly drives roundworms, is non-toxic and raises immunity. Vaccination Typically, the first vaccination is given at 8-9 weeks, and repeated at 12 weeks if an imported vaccine is used. The consistency of the feed should be thinner, which promotes more abundant milk flow. Not every day, but add a little vegetable oil. It is possible at the same age to teach puppies to raw fish mince, which is prepared by the breeder in a meat grinder from small sea fish (capelin, cod, fresh frozen sprat). In the second half of pregnancy, the bitch must be provided with frequent and short, calm walks. If not laxative for milk, then you can give up to 1 liter per day. It should be borne in mind that the milk of a sucking bitch is distinguished by its nutritional value (the bitch’s milk contains 7% protein, 8% fat, 4% lactose). Unfortunately, an additive such as Calcidi is not suitable because K. They will help you in raising healthy, mentally normal, strong puppies. It is better to give cottage cheese calcined, cooked at home. It is sold at a regular pharmacy. Give the drug on a full stomach once without the use of laxatives (petrolatum

We will enter the world of feeding Yorkies from the main entrance, a kind of “dog restaurant”. The main thing here. Good manners. First of all, upbringing is visible in relation to food: patience at the time of preparation, the beginning of a meal only after permission, indifference to the host’s food intake and neglect of treating strangers. These rules may seem cruel at first glance, but they protect the nervous system of dogs, protect their stomachs and lay the foundation for safety.

Good manners should be cultivated from puppyhood. Feed at a certain time, put a bowl of food for no longer than 15-20 minutes, do not react to a pleading look during family meals, make sure that during a walk the Yorkie does not pick up pieces on the street.

A well-bred dog does not just cause affection and does not annoy the owners, it is protected from many troubles. But we need a healthy, cheerful and obedient pet.

Choosing the type of feeding

If your baby refuses to eat, do not sound the alarm right away. It is possible that he just decided to arrange a fasting day.

Feeding a pregnant and lactating dog

The correct development of puppies in the womb, and the health of the bitch herself depends on proper nutrition. A puppy bitch requires significantly more calories, protein, calcium and phosphorus, which the dog must receive from high quality food sources to meet its own nutritional needs and the needs of developing puppies.

Pregnant bitches have very high energy requirements (4-8 times higher than healthy adult dogs), but this does not mean that the dog needs to be overfed. You just need to increase the nutritional value and calorie content of food, due to which the animal will receive enough energy.

However, it is impossible to dramatically increase the caloric content of food, especially at the beginning of pregnancy, because instead of additional energy, unnecessary fat will be deposited, and significant weight gain can cause complications during puppies and childbirth.

You should take care of the nutrition of the puppy bitch in advance, even before mating, make up a diet with all the changes that are necessary at different stages of pregnancy. It should be borne in mind that puppy bitches may change their taste preferences. The dog may show interest in food that it previously refused to eat and turn away from food it preferred before pregnancy.

How to feed a pregnant dog

Food must be digestible so that nutrients are effectively absorbed by the dog from small portions of food.

When natural feeding a pregnant bitch, it is important to increase the percentage of meat products while reducing the amount of carbohydrate and fiber-containing foods. Approximately 65-70% of the diet should be meat products, namely, raw beef or rabbit meat, raw green tripe, boiled heart, liver, sometimes raw sea fish.

Dear friends! Here is a small guide to caring for a puppy and lactating bitch and suckling puppies. These recommendations were collected from various sources: literary, personal experience, advice from other dog breeders.

So you’ve got your dog tied. Of course, you did not forget to drive out the worms and treat the dog from fleas 2-3 weeks before the expected estrus. Now your task is for the bitch to get through the pregnancy well and give birth to healthy puppies. Based on this, she needs to provide good quality nutrition, good exercise, normal mental well-being.

In the first half of pregnancy, nutrition does not differ much from the usual one, but starting from the 2nd month of pregnancy, additional feeding is added to the bitch and fed 3-4 times a day in small portions. Not only the multiplicity increases, but also the total amount of food received (by about 1.5-2 times). Includes good quality meat, boiled poultry (chicken, turkey) and lean sea fish (hake, haddock, cod, sea bass), deboned, are required. If the dog is accustomed to raw fish, then you can give capelin, polar cod, freshly frozen sprat. The presence of boiled cereals (rice, buckwheat) is required. But in one feeding, its volume should not exceed one glass in a boiled form. The emphasis is on protein foods. Useful raw tripe (no fat), boiled offal (heart, udder, chicken stomachs, chicken necks, beef kaltyks, etc.). Not every day, but add a little vegetable oil. Two or three times a week they give an egg, daily low-fat cottage cheese and fermented milk (kefir, fermented baked milk, yogurt, reverse). If not laxative for milk, then you can give up to 1 liter per day. Of the vegetables, raw grated carrots, boiled pumpkin, zucchini, tomatoes, small amounts of cabbage, greens (salad, dandelion leaves soaked in salted water, scalded nettle) are useful.

What to feed a nursing dog

First, let’s figure out how to feed a dog after giving birth. In the first couple of days after giving birth, the dog may not feel well and refuse to eat. At the moment, the animal has weakened, moreover, after eating the afterbirth, the dog’s digestion is difficult. After a maximum of 3 days, the dog’s digestion will return to normal and she will start feeding again, but usually after a few hours the bitch will calmly eat her portion of food.

In the first hours after giving birth, veterinarians recommend giving the dog tea with milk and sugar. Note that there should be little sugar in the tea, and the tea itself should be weak. This drink will help raise the bitch’s blood glucose levels to make her feel better. Although the smell of tea in many cases attracts dogs, sometimes they refuse such a drink. Instead of forcibly pouring tea into your dog’s mouth, try tricking him and dissolving a lump of butter in a warm drink.

Veterinarians are still arguing about whether it is worth giving a bitch to give birth to tea with sugar or not, and cannot come to a single answer. Some believe that there is nothing wrong with a dog drinking tea from time to time. Others say tea is bad for dogs due to tannins and caffeine.

In the first week after giving birth, you need to increase the amount of food you give your dog by one and a half times. For the second week, eat twice as much food as usual. And from the third week until the end of the lactation period, the amount of food for the dog must be tripled.

A little about the composition of the diet of a lactating dog. It is impossible to make protein food as the basis of the diet, since a lack of calcium will lead to eclampsia. At the same time, there should be enough protein in the dog’s diet for the puppies to grow quickly and gain weight. In general, protein foods (meat, fish and offal) should make up 45% of the diet.

Groats are necessary for a lactating bitch, so its amount in the diet should be up to 30%. The dog can fill the need for calcium through dairy products and milk. They make up 10% of the animal’s diet. The remaining 15% of the diet is vegetables, which are source of vitamins and minerals for the bitch and puppies.

Despite the fact that the dog’s diet contains vegetables, it still needs vitamin and mineral supplements. It is advisable to use those vitamins that are intended for lactating bitches. The same supplements are necessary for those bitches who do not eat natural food, but feed. Vitamin supplements are no longer required when the bitch is fed premium feed.

As for food for the dog, after giving birth, it is necessary to give it one that is intended for bitches during lactation. If the food manufacturer you are using does not produce such a product, then feed your dog puppy food.

How many times to feed a lactating dog per day so that it is full and has enough milk? Lactating bitches eat often and a lot. You need to feed the dog every 4-5 hours and do it one hour before feeding the puppies.

Don’t worry about lactating your dog if there is no milk in the nipples. Milk begins to be produced while the puppies are sucking on the bitch, so it does not accumulate in the glands. If you see that the puppies are well-fed, happy and gain weight well, do not worry about the lack of milk.

At the same time, there are also low-milk females, such dogs have puppies constantly hungry. In this case, it is necessary to introduce into the dog’s diet foods that stimulate lactation, and these are raw carrots, meat broth, fish, oatmeal porridge, meat.

There are various drugs to stimulate lactation, but they should only be used under the supervision of a veterinarian. If the bitch has too much milk, it will stagnate in the nipples, and this, in turn, will lead to the development of mastitis.

How to feed a dog after giving birth for normal lactation

Dressings with synthomycin emulsion should be used if cracked nipples are found. Within 2-3 days after giving birth, the bitch may have no appetite, but she must be fed after 6-8 hours.

These days, the shepherd must have constant access to water. Feeding the dog on the following days of the first week should be done 4 times a day. The diet should include vitamin and mineral supplements. You need to feed the bitch mainly with liquid food: milk, cottage cheese, liquid porridge, with good tolerance, you can give fermented milk products. Meat soup with cereals and boiled meat should be included in the diet in small portions and gradually. Drinking plenty of fluids increases lactation in a lactating bitch. In the second week, the bitch can begin to feed raw meat in small pieces. The daily requirement of a lactating bitch weighing 40 kg in nutrients is as follows: 270 g of proteins; 60 g fat; 470 g of easily digestible carbohydrates; 35 grams of fiber. In the third week, the feeding of the shepherd should become more varied and abundant so that both she and the puppies can get enough nutrients. Due to the fact that bitches differ in the quantity and quality of milk produced, their nutritional requirements may deviate from the average and should be calculated individually.

View Full Version: Postpartum nutrition

SOS. Dear SAOvody help with advice! 12.12.16 my Gerdochka became a mother for the first time, 11 puppies. I have a question about feeding T.K. If I understand correctly now this is the basis of the basics. So now we are feeding rice-millet porridge (buckwheat) with the addition of oatmeal (eats about 2-2.5 liters per day), cottage cheese 150-250 grams, since yesterday I began to add boiled meat (chicken breast, stomachs) into porridge. She just stopped eating empty (with butter). I cooked jelly from chicken heads and necks, I chose the hard bones. I will add a raw egg to the porridge. 2-3 times a week. We feed small portions. 4-5 times a day. Of the supplements, the dog-mamacaltium, the excel-pharmaceutical analogue of lactogon (I don’t remember the name), divided the supplements in half and give it in the morning and in the evening. Kifir, yogurt, etc. Not in any, I drank tea with milk only on the first day, I do not drink water. It is possible to force to drink only milk (goat) today we will try to give stewed vegetables (cabbage, zucchini). So I kind of explained the situation (if I missed something, I’ll get better) questions. what to fix (add, subtract) in the diet? When can you introduce raw meat, in particular a tripe? What kind of fish is better to introduce? And why refuses to drink? She could go to a bowl of water once a day, but now that feeds, the body needs water. P.S. I’m a beginner on the forum, I have not yet found a specific answer, if there is a similar request to the adnins, do not be angry about the clone of the topic, but transfer it to it, show compassion to the beginner: friends:

Good afternoon, Sergey, unfortunately I cannot tell you, we will wait for experienced breeders. Your topic is very welcome, I am here with a request) It would be very useful if experienced breeders shared how they feed their dogs during pregnancy and lactation. When feeding natural and if someone feeds with drying. I looked through the topics already available on the forum and there is nothing detailed and understandable. I understand that everyone does not have enough time, but maybe Lena (ZarKalem) or Lada (ProstoSAO) or Tanya (Rainbow) or someone else with great experience will share their advice. : tender:

Let’s wait together for SAOprofi 🙂

Irina iz Vorobiev

From my own experience, I can only share “ancient” advice. We gave tea with condensed milk so as not to provoke stomach upset in bitches. Not all dogs tolerate milk well. Raw meat was injected only on the 10th day after delivery. They gave porridge, cottage cheese, kefir, scalded meat, boiled fish, steamed vegetables (mainly carrots) You should not get carried away with protein food, so as not to provoke eclampsia. This is when they were fed straight. And when they already switched to dry food, I bought food for lactating bitches “(if memory serves, Royal Canin)

So, in fact, the scar can be scalded?

Irina iz Vorobiev

I would have postponed the scar, but the CAO specialists may disagree with me 🙂

So, in fact, the scar can be scalded?

There is essentially no difference between raw and scalded tripe. I don’t understand the meaning of this procedure at all. And the question is why the first 10 days are not recommended to give raw meat? How is it related to the manifestation of eclampsia?

Irina iz Vorobiev

Nastya, as far as I know, excess protein food is often the cause of eclampsia. At risk, especially dogs that have eaten the afterbirth.

Nastya, as far as I know, an excess of protein food is often the cause of eclampsia. At risk, especially dogs that have eaten the afterbirth.

I was just never particularly interested in this topic, now I read something. But cottage cheese, milk, eggs are the same protein, so I don’t understand why they sin on meat. But the afterbirths seem to stimulate childbirth and lactation on the contrary, and in nature, animals eat them. Although I know that our SAO is already far from natural conditions.

Irina iz Vorobiev

But the afterbirths seem to stimulate childbirth and lactation on the contrary, and in nature, animals eat them. Although I know that our CAO is already far from natural conditions. Yes, but in natural conditions, animals do not leave their puppies and do not hunt for the first days after giving birth. I usually reduce the amount of meat before childbirth and after childbirth the same. And dairy products. In particular, cottage cheese contains calcium, impairments in the absorption of calcium and leads to eclampsia. The fish was given cooked, because K. It contains phosphorus, which is involved in calcium metabolism. With a large amount of protein foods, the balance of calcium in the blood is disturbed. Oh, I got it wrong 🙂 I understand it myself, but it’s hard to explain it;)

Today the ears and tails were cropped, the owner of the nursery cut it. About the scar she said while feeding in any form is impossible

Yes, but in natural conditions, the animals do not leave their puppies and do not hunt for the first days after giving birth. It contains phosphorus, which is involved in calcium metabolism. With a large amount of protein foods, the balance of calcium in the blood is disturbed. Oh, I got it wrong 🙂 I understand it myself, but it’s hard to explain it;)

I found this “Directed studies were carried out, as a result of which it was established that the dog’s body, with conditionally consumed 100% of the daily calcium intake,” spends “no more than 30% on the work of internal organs and systems, and 70% or even more is spent only on digestion and assimilation of animal protein food. in other words, meat. ” But I don’t know who the author is. Plus I remembered that for the correct assimilation of calcium, there must be a certain ratio of it to phosphorus. Perhaps that is why, when feeding with meat, calcium absorption worsens, because. There is much more phosphorus in it. Well, that’s me) it just became interesting, maybe someday I’ll decide to start a lady)

Today the ears and tails were cropped, the owner of the nursery cut them. She said about the scar while feeding in any form. But what about the meat? All the same, the bitch needs protein for the normal development of the puppies and for herself.

The bitch needs protein for the normal development of puppies. Protein is now boiled fish and cottage cheese, milk is a must. Sergey, try to cook porridge in water, using 2/3 of the liquid, after boiling water, add 1/3 of milk and boil. Wait another week with meat, tripe, offal. Cottage cheese, milk can be increased, and give vegetables a little later, so as not to cause diarrhea in children. Loaf, pasta. again with milk. Yes. in the first week, increase the usual soldering by 1.5 times, the second by 2 times, the third by 2.5 times. And so everything seems to be fed correctly. I forgot))) while change the water for sweet tea with milk.

Protein is now boiled fish and cottage cheese, milk is required.

I mean after 10 days. Because the breeder did not recommend giving a scar until the end of the feeding

I will not argue with anyone, everyone has their own opinion. I’ll just tell you how I do it, especially as Nastya wrote correctly, not one litter of our kennel was born and grew up in front of the members of the forum))) The first 4 weeks after mating, the nutrition of the bitches does not change, the same diet: porridge in the morning, raw meat / tripe / fish in the evening. Well, of course additives: eggs, vegetable oil, etc. From the 5th week, a third feeding is added: fermented milk cheese, sometimes hololits. I gradually increase in volume. So we feed until the very birth. I do not remove either meat or tripe from the diet. From supplements from 4-5 weeks I add calcium. During labor, I give the bitch to eat as much afterbirth as she wants. Mine always eat everything, even if there are 12 of them))). This also has a good effect on the process of childbirth and lactation. It should be remembered that many bitches only receive milk for 2-3 days. And before that comes only colostrum. It is not abundant, but it is very valuable and nutritious for puppies. So don’t make a bitch drink tea milk in liters.

For every dog owner, the appearance of puppies in the house is a joyful event. When you are busy with puppies, do not forget about the food needs of the bitch. Information about what to feed a lactating dog will be useful for all owners who have puppies for the first time.

Caring for a lactating (lactating) shepherd dog

Caring for a lactating (lactating) shepherd dog In the first week after childbirth, the shepherd must be taken outside on demand. You should thoroughly wash the dog’s paws after walking and wipe the nipples with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. The nipples of a nursing bitch generally need constant care: they need to be carefully examined every day in order to detect cracks or symptoms of mastitis in time.

How to feed a lactating dog. Discharge in dogs after childbirth

In the first time after childbirth (about two weeks), the bitch will have mucous discharge from the vagina. this is a normal and necessary phenomenon: in this way, the uterus expels the remnants of amniotic fluid and blood, clearing itself independently. Discharge is a kind of litmus test: it speaks about the health of the dog, so it is very important to monitor the nature of the discharge.

The first few days normal discharge should be considered brown-red with green, then these discharge are replaced by tar or light brown, which, in turn, become more and more transparent, then colorless, and eventually stop altogether. The amount of excreted substance is individual for each dog.

For a month or a slightly longer period of time, an irregular appearance of light spotting is possible.

The following deviations from the norm can be considered the reason for an immediate appeal to the veterinarian:

  • Discharge, exuding a sharp putrid or sour odor, having a dark green or almost black color, becoming abundant, coupled with an elevated temperature (more than 39.5-40 ° C), indicate a non-escaping afterbirth or the presence of a dead puppy in the uterus, which caused inflammation;
  • Abundant scarlet-bloody discharge indicate uterine bleeding (complications after childbirth. bleeding);
  • Complete absence of discharge or discharge that lasts more than 3 weeks.

How to feed a dog after giving birth?

This should be done gradually, not abruptly. If the diet remains unchanged, the Spitz will gain weight very quickly.

Spitz walks after childbirth

Walking in the postpartum period is necessary, as always, the more they have a beneficial effect on the process of milk production and help the dog to regain physical shape. But in the first week after whelping, they should be quite short: the dog should relieve itself. and immediately go home, to the puppies, that is, about 15 minutes (walk no more than four times a day). Since at this time the mother dog is reluctant to move away from the puppies, she herself will adjust the time of your walk and, accordingly, after a while she will begin to increase it: from the second week she will walk for about half an hour. Usually the duration of the walk returns to your usual rhythm after three weeks.

Walking is the best and most convenient time to change diapers in the nest: this way you don’t disturb mommy by touching her puppies.

To protect the nipples from dirt, insect bites, and sagging mammary glands, wear a veterinary blanket or a light raincoat on the dog.

At the end of the walk, do not forget to treat the nipples and paws of the Spitz with a weak solution of potassium permanganate (potassium permanganate) or other drugs, after which you can let mommy to your children.

Feeding a lactating dog

The course of gamavit 1 ml per day s / c for a week. Weaning From 4-5 weeks puppies are gradually transferred to solid food. Weaning should be done gradually, reducing the number of feedings and removing the mother if possible. If there is an urgent need to stop feeding:

  • Remove the mother from the puppies, do not let them into the room where they are
  • Cut back on her food and drink
  • You can make a compress on the nipples of camphor oil
  • Veterinary drug galastop 0.1 ml per kg drip into the mouth for 4-5 days.

Reviews about galastop are controversial, 50/50. It helps a lot for some, but categorically does not suit some animals. Consult a competent veterinarian.

  • Put on a lightweight jumpsuit on the dog’s body (it’s not difficult to make it yourself, make holes for the legs in old tights).
  • Watch for mastitis.

How to feed your dog after giving birth? Healthy eating rules

During childbirth, a dog spends a lot of energy, its body is no longer so successful in resisting various infections: it is during this period that any harmless disease can have very serious consequences for the health of the dog and, as a result, its offspring. There is no doubt that in the postpartum period, a woman in labor requires rest and peace and a complete absence of stress, proper nutrition, a warm nest, adherence to general rules of hygiene and daily change of bedding, walks, as well as your care and vigilant, but unobtrusive control (do not leave the dog alone with the puppies at least the first time).

In the next 2 weeks, refuse to visit guests and show them a whelping dog and her children. this is a serious stress for the Spitz and a reason to protect the offspring, which can spill out sideways for the puppies themselves, since mommy can accidentally injure them.

For some time (about several hours) after the end of labor, a young mother dog usually does not want to leave her babies, therefore, if the dog does not ask to go outside, do not disturb it and give it a little rest.

During childbirth, there is a violation of the water balance in the Spitz’s body, which needs to be restored. so, First of all, you need to offer your pet a drink. Place a drinking bowl next to her nest (playpen). It is best if you give her warm tea with honey (sugar is not recommended, as it causes fermentation), but you can also give plain pure water. It is undesirable to offer the dog milk: it weakens and stimulates additional milk production, which is not needed, because while the puppies are very small, the amount that the mother has is enough for them. It will be optimal to give drinks in small portions, but often.

For the first 6 hours after giving birth, it is advisable not to feed the Spitz, but if your pet still asks to eat, give preference to fermented milk products or other easily digestible food.

Secondly, if mommy-spitz still wants to relieve bowels or bladder, you need to walk her. You should not allow the dog to go down / up the stairs on its own, and the walk itself should be limited only to solving the main problem.

Thirdly, Regardless of whether you were out for a walk or not, after giving birth, the dog must be washed: with warm water from the shower using the most ordinary laundry soap, thoroughly wash the spitz’s hind legs and tail, as well as the stomach, paying attention to the nipples. Then dry your dog with a soft towel to avoid colds.

On the following days, it is necessary to wash the newly-made mom after each walk, and disinfect the mammary glands and paws by treating them with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, furacilin, 0.5% lysol solution or 2% boric acid solution.

Important! Bitches with inelastic soft tissues of the vagina need an additional procedure: after you have washed the dog, you need to inject synthomycin emulsion into the vagina. To do this, slightly warm 5ml of the emulsion until it becomes liquid, then put it in a small syringe and gently insert it into the dog’s vagina. Repeat this procedure every five days.

Fourthly, it is imperative to replace the litter soaked in blood and amniotic fluid with a clean and dry one. The litter should be solid white. this is extremely important: this will make it easier for you to follow the color of the discharge.

During the first week, the litter should be changed 1-2 times a day, then. more often, according to the situation: at this time, the puppies begin to urinate more abundantly, and in no case should the mother and the offspring lie on wet (danger of colds and pneumonia ).
