How to make a pattern for a dog jumpsuit

Pattern of a jumpsuit for a dog: features of making and constructing a pattern on the example of a master class on sewing jumpsuits for a dog

Nowadays, more and more often on the streets of large cities you can find dogs in clothes and even in shoes. The dressed dog looks rather unusual and, accordingly, attracts attention. At first glance, it seems that clothes for dogs are a tribute to fashion or another whim of the owner, but in fact, this is not at all the case. You still need to look for a pattern for creating a cute jumpsuit for different breeds of dogs, but we will provide you with a popular model for sewing for free!

The fact is that clothes primarily protect the animal from dirt and dampness in rainy weather, because, as you know, a dog needs a walk in any weather, and even several times a day. Washing your pet after every walk is very harmful to the coat, so the only way out in this situation is to have protective clothing. In winter, clothing protects dogs from the cold, especially for breeds that have no undercoat, too short or simply no coat. Such breeds include the Yorkshire Terrier, Toy Terrier, Chinese Crested and similar breeds. In addition, there are breeds with very delicate skin and for them clothing serves as protection from scratches and small cuts (for example, for the Chinese crested).

A separate conversation about footwear for animals. many animal owners believe that footwear is an overkill, that animals should get used to the winter cold from childhood, but on the other hand, in big cities, roads are sprinkled with special reagents that corrode the pads of animals to blood. In this case, you definitely cannot do without shoes. Of course, you can find a compromise and put shoes on the dog in the event that you plan to walk on the roads, and in other cases do without it. But this is already a personal matter for each owner.

What materials are better to use for sewing overalls

Before you start sewing clothes yourself for your dog, you need to decide for what time of year you are going to sew a jumpsuit. if for a rainy autumn, then choose waterproof materials, for sewing winter jumpsuits you should pay attention to insulating materials. fleece, synthetic winterizer, wool or fur.

Sewing overalls for a small dog, such as Pomeranian, York, Chihuahua, Chinese Crested and other mini breeds, requires very little fabric, you can even use your old things (for example, jackets, jeans or a warm sweater).

After you have decided what kind of jumpsuit you will sew and have prepared all the necessary materials, you can start building a pattern.

In order to build a pattern, you need to measure the distance from the neck to the tail and a few more measurements. Of course, if you want to sew a jumpsuit with many small details, then you will need a couple of dozen additional measurements, but for the first time you can do with a simpler option.

Take a piece of paper, preferably graph paper, and draw a line equal to the length from the neck to the tail of the dog. We divide this distance into eight equal parts. The length of each part is the length and width of the cell into which you need to divide the entire sheet of paper on which you are going to build the pattern. We draw the entire sheet with cells of this size.

The pattern for creating a comfortable jumpsuit for a dog looks like this:

you need to make the appropriate measurements of your dog and make adjustments to the pattern.

We take the following necessary measurements of your dog: the CD segment is the neck girth, MN is the wrist girth of the hind paws, LI is the wrist girth of the front paws, WB is the thigh girth, HD is the place where the front paw passes into the shoulder blade, AB is the waist girth, GW. maximum depth of the chest, ZH. hole for the tail.

We put all the measurements obtained on paper and draw a pattern. Add 30mm to the ZK segment. this is the distance for the back of the dog.

  • Do not forget to make a cutout on the belly for the boy’s dog (male) so that he can easily go to the toilet.
  • The jumpsuit pattern is ready. Cut out two parts on the fabric, cut along the marked lines and first sweep the product by hand. Try on the jumpsuit on the dog and make all the necessary adjustments, only then finally trim the seams. Sew in the zipper and fit the elastic into the leg so the dog will not step on it when walking. You can decorate the jumpsuit with appliques, rhinestones or bows. whatever comes to your mind.
  • Such a jumpsuit can be made with a hood, this is very important for dogs with delicate ears (for example, for a Yorkie), because it perfectly protects from cold, wind and frost.
  • When sewing overalls for a girl’s dog, keep in mind that they cannot chill the tummy, and if the dog is also a nursing mother, then the mammary glands also require protection from the cold so that mastitis does not develop.

On the Internet, you can find and download a large number of patterns for various clothing models, but most of them are designed for small breed dogs (for a toy terrier, for a Chihuahua, a Yorkie, a Chinese crested, a dachshund, a poodle). For large dogs, the patterns must be adjusted to suit your pet’s size.

We deal with patterns of overalls for a dog with our own hands

In general, buying clothes for your dog is a rather troublesome and costly business, so for those who are at least a little friends with a thread and a needle, I suggest trying to sew a jumpsuit with your own hands.

Jumpsuit pattern

A pattern for a dog jumpsuit is one of the highlights. The more accurately you build a pattern, the better the jumpsuit will “sit” on your furry friend.

Necessary materials

To make an insulated winter overalls for a dog, the size of my tomboy (Jack’s length at the back is 30 cm, weight 7.5 kg), you will need the following materials:

  • Membrane fabric (0.6 meters with a fabric width of 1.5 meters).
  • The thinnest synthetic winterizer (0.5 meters).
  • Fleece (0.5 meter).
  • Detachable zipper (along the length of the back of your dog and the length of the collar-hood). The length of my zipper is 50 cm.
  • Regular underwear elastic (1 meter).
  • Round hat elastic approx. 3 mm (1 meter) thick.
  • Reflective piping (1.5 meters).
  • Two clips.

You can watch the whole process of sewing insulated winter overalls for a dog with your own hands in a detailed video of a master class on our youtube channel. There I show and tell everything in detail. In addition, in the video you will see how, with one movement of your hand, a jumpsuit for a girl’s dog turns into a jumpsuit for a boy’s dog.

Jumpsuit pattern

And here is our pattern of overalls for a dog. By the way, this pattern can also be used to sew a raincoat for your tailed friend.

But you should understand that the jumpsuit pattern we offer is not universal. In any case, it needs to be adjusted taking into account the characteristics of your tail.

If you want to get a pattern that will immediately “sit” on your doggie perfectly, then there are a lot of craftswomen who, for a certain fee, will build you an individual sample.

Winter overalls for a dog

It’s already the end of November outside the window, and it’s time to sew warm clothes for our tails. And today we are going to sew a winter overalls for a dog. On our blog there is already a do-it-yourself master class on sewing overalls for a dog. But this is a simpler style. Today we will sew a more complex, but, in my opinion, a cooler model of an insulated winter overalls.

I saw this model of clothing for dogs at the joy-jack manufacturers of outerwear for Jack Russell Terriers. I really like their stuff. over, Jack even has a warm winter jacket from this manufacturer.

The clothes are really cool and high quality. But, it should be noted, not easy to execute. But this year we have sewn a lot of different clothes and accessories for our pets. These were vests, blankets, and harnesses. We have already acquired a certain skill. Therefore, today we will try our hand at sewing insulated overalls for a dog with our own hands.

We build a pattern

As always, I propose to build the pattern in the simplest way “on the grid”. The main measure for creating a mesh is the length of your watchdog’s back from the neck (where you put the collar on) to the tail. You need to divide the resulting value by 10. This will be the size of the side of the square of the grid specifically for your pet.

Let me give you an example. Let’s say the length of your dog’s back is 55 cm. 55: 10 = 5.5 cm.That is, you will need to build a net with a side of a square 5.5 cm.

Well, then on a sheet of paper we apply a “grid” of squares of 5.5 cm each. Well, then just transfer the pattern to the “grid”. In this video, I explain in detail how to do it.

But, before you start sewing a new thing for your woolen friend from a good fabric, I always advise: well, take some unnecessary fabric. Transfer the pattern to it, sew all the details, and try on your pet. So you will see where to subtract or add something. Personally, I always do this when the pattern is not familiar to me.

And be sure to attach photos of the jumpsuit that you will sew for your shaggy friend in the comments. Jack and I are very interested in what you did.!

Step by step instructions for sewing

If we consider the step-by-step instructions with the materials listed above on how to sew a thing, it looks like this:

  • Measure the body of the animal and make a pattern for the dog’s overalls according to your own ideas;

Pattern creation

  • Sew the edges of the parts together, insert the elastic into the cuffs with the collar and sew in the zipper;

Ready product

  • Decorate the product with various accessories to your taste.

As for the decoration, you can additionally make a hood. It is not necessary to sew it tightly, you can make it removable. To form a suit, it is necessary to measure the circumference of the head and ears, make a pattern, insert an elastic band into the finished product and sew it on to the finished clothes. Additionally, you can make a side. It is imperative to make a hole for emitting needs and cut a hole for the tail, having previously measured the diameter of the corresponding compartment.

You might consider making a jumpsuit with fully enclosed paws or creating detachable shoes with an elastic band, like children’s mittens, with a button or a button.

The specifics of how a dog’s outfit will be created depends entirely on what gender the dog has. It is for this reason that it is so important to choose the appropriate sewing instructions. The following scheme is suitable for both large four-legged friends and small Spitz or other species. You can use the resulting clothes as a regular raincoat. If you add a comfortable gasket to it, then in the winter the pet will be comfortable in it. All you need is:

  • Take measurements, cut out the material to start sewing;
  • Sew the hood to the back of the throat, additionally inserting an elastic band;
  • Lay the visor so that it would be convenient for the dog later, process it along the curved edge;
  • Overlap the straight edge of the visor and sew the visor to the front of the hood;
  • Sew up the stomach with the side elements of the future product;
  • Sew on parts of the cuffs and pull elastic bands on them.

Pattern for sewing stylish jumpsuit

Interestingly, for such a product, you can combine several different materials with each other, making a kind of sports pattern. You can also add an inscription on the back, but only after all the work has been done.

Additionally, you can decorate the created product with elements glowing in the dark. This will be very useful for the owners during a night or evening walk. It is also possible to make a jumpsuit with detachable details. Then it will look more like a suit with a jacket and pants. But for the convenience of putting on and taking off, this product will be better.

For toy terrier

The Toy Terrier differs from other dog breeds in that it has a very thin body and legs as thin as sticks. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully measure everything before creating clothes. To do this, take a measuring tape and write down all the measurements, namely the parameters of the length of the back with the chest, neck, the distance from the front to the hind legs, the length of the abdomen and the diameter of each paw.

Regardless of which jumpsuit model was chosen, the algorithm of actions will look like this:

  • Taking measurements and building patterns in full size;

Patterns for toy terrier

  • Cutting out patterns and applying to the wrong side of the fabric;
  • Pin fixing and chalk tracing;
  • Cutting patterns with a margin of 2 centimeters;
  • Cutting the lining and sewing the parts where they join;
  • Fold-overs for elastic bands and folds for edges;
  • Fitting the product and fitting in-line dimensions;
  • Threading elastic bands into cuffs, creating a zipper and turning the product to the front side.

Note! Additionally, you can decorate the resulting product using various buttons fixed on both sides, s, glowing lines for walking in the dark.

Taking measurements from the dog

To correctly take measurements from a dog, for example, a female bull terrier, corgi, york, hunting dog or spaniel, it is necessary to make the animal stand upright. In this case, the centimeter should be pressed as tightly as possible to the dog’s body. However, it is important to understand that there must be a turning point. Next, you need to carefully look at the created drawing of the product and make the appropriate measurements. Typically, a measurement is required for sewing:

  • back length;
  • the volume of the chest with the neck;
  • waist circumference with the distance from the neck to the back of the legs;
  • the volume of the front paws;
  • sleeve length with the volume of the hind legs;

  • leg length;
  • distance to the urethra;
  • the distance between the paws in front and the paws from the front to the rear;
  • distance between the ears;
  • the circumference of the head under the ears, in front of them and behind them.

In rare cases, when you need to take measurements of the tail, for example, for sewing a designer jumpsuit for Halloween.

Overalls for dachshund

Dachshund is the most unusual breed of dog. It requires special patterns, since it differs from other animals in the height of the paws, the length of the body and neck. She also very often has long hairy ears and a small head. It is very easy to make a jumpsuit for a dachshund from the material presented above, but it is much more interesting to make it from ordinary socks. At the same time, it is not necessary to have any special sewing skills in order to get a high-quality and comfortable product. You need to prepare:

  • Socks;
  • Yarn;
  • Elastic thread;
  • Crochet needle;
  • Paper with a ruler.

The work process is as follows: First, you need to put the toe with the heel up and draw a line from the center to the other edge. After that, retreat 3 centimeters from the heel and draw a line perpendicular to the already drawn one. Measure 10 centimeters from the perpendicular strip and draw another line. Make a mark for the paws on the created stripes. Draw a pattern on paper. circles with a diameter of 6 by 3 centimeters.

Fix the patterns with threads in the indicated places on the textiles. Cut out circles on fabric and remove paper blanks. Using a crochet hook and yarn, tie the holes, making double crochets. Try on the blank on the animal and make holes for the legs, tail, head and urethra.

Tips for sewing clothes for dogs of different breeds

When making clothes for dogs, it is important to take into account not only the climate, season, breed and gender of the animal, to correctly think over the location of the details in this regard, but also the character of the pet. Often during a walk, dogs play with other animals, rub against trees and poles, run diligently and perform tricks at the behest of the owner. Therefore, the clothes should be made not only of high-quality and durable material, but also tightly stitched, so that it would be impossible to easily tear off parts of the general pattern for dogs.

In addition, you need to think about security. Often, when novice craftsmen sew on a lot of unnecessary parts that come off and are swallowed by a pet.

Note! It is necessary to make accents where the dog cannot reach with its teeth or claws. This is important to remember when making products.

Interesting and simple patterns of overalls for dogs

Making a jumpsuit for a dog with your own hands is easy. The main thing is to correctly take all the necessary measurements, take the materials and use the ready-made sewing instructions. How to take measurements, how to make patterns for clothes for dogs and how to create a jumpsuit, then.

Necessary materials

To make a jumpsuit and patterns for clothes for a boy, you can take any materials. As a rule, for ordinary outdoor walks with an animal, it is enough to prepare:

  • membrane fabric protected from liquids;

  • lining sintepon fabric;

  • tractor zipper.

You can also sew various accessories on top of the jumpsuit, for example, a collar. It is important to understand that the lining fabric must be chosen depending on the purpose of the overalls. If you plan to make clothes for winter walks, you need to take a thick insulation Alpolux lounger. If for spring and summer. flannel.

Revealing in detail the topic of how to make patterns for dogs with your own hands, patterns should be made based on the season and weather. To create an off-season product, it is best to use a single layer of fabric that can protect the animal from dirt and rain. At the same time, the Russian hunting dog will be comfortable in him, and he will not feel uncomfortable. He will not be hot due to the excellent air permeability.

Overalls for the winter should be as insulated as possible and made of fleece with padding polyester. This is especially true for those dogs that have smooth coats.

As for the composition of the material, in order to cover the body, it is best to select cotton, polyester or microfiber materials, paying attention to the padding. She should not rub against the dog’s fur and spoil it. For example, satin and viscose lining is perfect and you will not need a pattern for a papillon jacket. In terms of color, it is better to give preference to those tones that will retain their brightness and beauty for a long time.

A special role should be given to the fastener, especially if a do-it-yourself pattern is being made for a dog’s raincoat. You can use buttons with Velcro and rubber bands instead of a tractor zipper. At the same time, buttons will be a good option for the summer, and rubber bands for the winter.

Stylish chihuahua hooded jumpsuit

Chihuahua is the most common dog breed for which overalls are made. These animals especially do not like the cold, therefore, as a rule, they make warmed clothes for them. The process of creating such a thing looks like this:

  • Creation of the necessary measurements and outline of the circuit;
  • Formation of patterns of the future product with small seam allowances;
  • Creation of patterns and details for lining;
  • Sewing of outer parts with linings without processing the sleeves;
  • Formation at the bottom of a strip with a width corresponding to the width of the chest;
  • Sewing a zipper into the created strip and creating a neat hood;
  • Connecting the remaining parts.

Note! The length of the sleeves should not be shortened. Better to make it longer, and then see how it looks and whether the dog is comfortable.

It is worth noting that knitted clothes for dogs, including Chihuahuas, are gaining popularity more and more often. Therefore, the following is a scheme for creating a stylish knitted jumpsuit for a Chihuahua. Naturally, there are various patterns for knitting. Before starting work, you need to remember some tips:

  • Count the number of centimeter loops and compare with measurements;
  • Each piece must be knitted separately, and then sewn after measurement.

For a jumpsuit, you need to take 150 grams of yarn with additional accessories in the form of buttons, Velcro and buttons. First, make a collar by typing 70 loops and tying with an elastic band about 9 centimeters. Next, divide the loops into several parts. 24 will go to the stomach, the rest to the back.

For the back, add 6 loops in the first row. In each subsequent one, add one loop. Knit to armhole.

For the front, add 15 loops in the first row, making them over every few loops. In the second row, an elastic band is made. The procedure is repeated until the armhole.

Pattern for tailoring with a hood for chihuahua

For the armhole on the back and belly, close 3 loops each. After 22 centimeters, make a two centimeter elastic band and close the loops. Separately build sleeves with pants, typing 30 loops and 42, respectively. In every third row, add one loop from each edge. Close the loops when the desired length of the sleeves with legs has been reached. Sew up the stomach and back, then sew on the sleeves with the sides, make armholes for the legs, tying a few centimeters of 50 loops with an elastic band. Thus, you will get an unusual costume for dogs and at the same time a warm jumpsuit, which can be decorated with a small soft pompom, large glue rhinestones and other sew-on accessories.

Important! To create a stylish jumpsuit, it is necessary to study general style trends. For example, today you can add stripes to the sides of the outfit, which are usually found on tracksuits. It is also fashionable to make monochromatic suits with the addition of bright accents in the form of belts on the hoods and s on the back for small things. Another cool trend is to wear the same outfit with your dog.

In general, making a pattern of a stylish overalls for a dog with your own hands is not difficult. The main thing is to act according to the presented scheme from users and use step-by-step instructions.

Sew these two details around the entire perimeter.

Then choose a drawing that appeals to you. These can be longitudinal or transverse stripes, squares, rhombuses, etc. Then draw the lines, having previously marked them with chalk or a piece of soap. Stitch along these lines. The subsequent steps should be the same as for normal sewing. Connect all the parts and sew the lining.

Overalls for a dog: pattern, sewing instructions, photo

Pet owners want their pets to always look great. That is why it is so important to be able to sew beautiful clothes for them. A pattern for a dog jumpsuit will help you cope with this task. On it you can sew your dog the most original and practical thing.

One Piece Jumpsuit

This pattern of overalls for dogs is universal for breeds with long hair (this is what the designers voiced for this purpose). But if you have a desire, you can use it for dogs of different sizes and coats of different lengths. Its advantage is also that the garment can be made reversible. To do this, you need to select an equivalent material for both sides and, if desired, provide the middle with filler. Here’s the technique:

  • Take measurements of back length and bust.
  • Build a pattern according to the appropriate measurements on paper.
  • Along all perimeters, add three centimeters for seam allowances and cut out the pattern.
  • Transfer the pattern to the fabric and cut out the main part in two pieces: from the main material, lining and insulation (if double-sided, take the second material instead of lining).
  • Sew the sleeves by folding the long sections right-side up on the main fabric and lining.
  • Insert a wedge on the belly line between the right and left halves.
  • If you are planning a fully enclosed jumpsuit, cut the hole from the bottom.
  • Connect the parts from the main material, insulation and lining (or pre-sew the insulation to the material, and then connect to the lining).

Plain blanket

This DIY dog clothing pattern is very easy to follow, so even a beginner can handle it. At the same time, such a jumpsuit is quite practical and looks quite creative and original. You won’t need a lot of material, but it will be enough for your pet to stay warm in cool spring or autumn weather. Here are the sewing features:

  • First, you need to measure the length of the back, as well as the girth of the neck.
  • The part itself called “back” can be in two parts or be one-piece.
  • In the second case, it is recommended to simply fold the fabric in half and postpone all the necessary measurements.
  • Sew a ring from the collar, to the lower edge of which the belt should be sewn.
  • The extended part of the belt should cover the back to fix the blanket.
  • You can make a loop at the point at the tail.
  • The wider the belt, the more area of the belly it can cover.
  • For insulation, you can put insulation inside between the fabrics.

Taking measurements

In order to make a pattern of clothes for dogs with your own hands, you need to learn how to take measurements correctly. Things will sit on your pet perfectly if you heed the following tips:

  • Be sure to take all measurements in a standing position.
  • The parameters will be correct, and the clothes will not hinder movement if you choose the widest place on the body for measurement.
  • You may not need to bother to measure your neck girth as it is the size of your dog’s collar.
  • Chest circumference is measured underneath, not in front of the dog’s front legs.
  • The distance from the withers to the base of the tail corresponds to the length of the back.
  • Certain models require correct head measurements. To do this, you need to measure the distance from ear to ear, the circumference of the head and muzzle of the dog.
  • How to take the rest of the measurements, you can see in the photo below.

The basic basis of the pattern

It will not be difficult to make a pattern of clothes for dogs with your own hands. It is not very difficult to build, although at first glance it may give just such an impression. The most important thing is to understand how it works. And for this you need to carefully deal with the drawings and correctly postpone the measurements on paper. Here’s what you need to know when building a sewing pattern in a detailed job description:

  • Draw a rectangle equal to the back length (plus a few centimeters for the curves of the pattern).
  • Set aside the width (at the waist and chest).
  • Continuing the line, mark the width of the back.
  • Divide the width of the back into two parts, and then measure a third of the neck circumference from the point of intersection. You will get a neckline.
  • Construct the shoulder slice by determining the depth of the armhole according to your dog’s measurements (hind and front legs).
  • The length of the trousers is measured by the height of the legs from the top joint to the bottom.
  • Don’t forget the ponytail cut.

Jumpsuit with hood

This wonderful, hand-made pattern of clothes for small dogs will definitely help you in making original and stylish models. You can dress up your pet in a jumpsuit with a hood. Choose a material of any color and style the hood the way you like (for example, with bunny ears). It will look very funny, because small dogs always look cute and evoke the most tender emotions. Here are the order of steps when building a pattern and while sewing:

  • Build a pattern according to the picture. For this you will need basic measurements.
  • Make the sleeve in the shape of a raglan, for this you need to measure the depth of the armhole (from the point under the front paw to the neck).
  • The length of the sleeve depends on your desire: from short at the level of the upper joint to full length to the bottom.
  • The fastener is best done on the belly to make it easier to put on the hood.
  • The hood is in two parts. To build a pattern, you need to take into account the circumference of the muzzle and head, as well as the distance from ear to ear (especially if you plan to make holes for the ears).

Pattern of overalls for dogs

A pattern for a dog jumpsuit is one of the most important components. The more accurately the measurements are taken and the pattern is built, the better the new thing will “sit” on your pet. And in a comfortable attire, even the most fastidious “mod”, for example, such as our Jack, will feel free and comfortable during a walk.

The main size that must be guided for building a mesh and further drawing a pattern is the length of the pet’s back from withers to tail.

Having measured this parameter, we divide it by 10. The resulting value is the size of the side of the square.

I will give an example on Jack. Jack’s back length from the collar to the base of the tail is 30 cm.Thus, I need 30: 10 = 3 cm.Thus, the grid of the jack pattern will consist of squares, each side of which is 3 cm.

Taking basic measurements from the pet

To begin with, let’s take the basic measurements from the dog (as shown in the photo below): the length of the back, the girth of the neck and the girth of the chest. If you are sewing a blanket or a vest, these measurements are quite enough.

But if you want to make a jumpsuit for a doggie, then it would be nice to also try on the length of its paws, so that after cutting the trouser legs they do not turn out to be short. Although, this can also be easily corrected by “increasing” decorative cuffs.

In this video, I tell you how to build a “net” and transfer to it the pattern of a blanket, vest or overalls, based on the size of your dog.

Do I need to dress the dog

In this video we will explain why you need to dress your dog. What adverse factors can clothes protect your pet from? And we will also show the entire wardrobe of our Jack Russell Terrier Jekusik.

Many times, subscribers to our YouTube channel have asked to tell and show how to sew a jumpsuit for a dog with their own hands. Therefore, at the popular request of the workers, Jack and I do it!

As usual, first we take measurements and build a pattern.

Do-it-yourself overalls for a dog

I think it is no secret for every dog breeder that clothes for animals are very expensive. But, if you have at least the minimum skill of working with a sewing machine, then, having spent a small amount of money on fabric, you can easily and simply sew a jumpsuit for a dog with your own hands.

Earlier, I already talked about the fact that our Jekusik does not really welcome fancy-dress walks. As soon as, before going out into the street, I begin to shift his little things, choosing what to wear him, he immediately hides under the bed. Only a cowardly nose snores hopefully: what if it blows!

But, despite the fact that Jack, to put it mildly, has a dislike for outfits, our wardrobe is quite numerous: knitted and insulated overalls, blankets, vests, raincoats. There is nothing you can do about it. Whether he likes it or not, in any case, you need to protect your pet from weather troubles.

Necessary materials

To make the jumpsuit, I used the following materials:

  • Waterproof membrane fabric.
  • Lining fabric on padding polyester (lining stitch). Depending on how warm you want the jumpsuit or not, you can use a thinner fabric (for example, flannel, fleece) as a lining. If you plan to use the overalls in severe frosts, then as an additional insulation layer, you can take Alpolux insulation, which is quite frost-resistant.
  • Tractor zipper. If you will sew a zipper only along the back (without a collar), as I did, then the length of the zipper must be taken exactly the same as the length of the back of your pet (in my case, it is 30 cm). If you plan to “extend” the zipper to the end of the collar, then its length, accordingly, should be larger.

Jack always wears collars. If I sewed a zipper all the way down the jumpsuit, including the collar, I would have to put the collar on Jack over the collar. After all, if I put the collar down, then the leash would constantly rub against the collar, but it seems to me that this is not very convenient. In my opinion, the version with a long lock is suitable when your pet is wearing a harness.

Step-by-step instruction

The proposed pattern was made for my Jekusik, for the length of his legs, the width of his chest and the girth of his neck.

There is a good saying: Measure seven times, cut once! All dogs are different. Some have longer or shorter legs. Someone is more slender, while others like to eat well.

I did not make a “trial” version, since this pattern has already been tested. On it I sewed a vest for Jack. The only thing that I had to additionally measure was the length of Jekusik’s legs.

Our first fitting looked exactly like this! Caught that rare moment when Jack was stationary, dozing.

Yes, if you use a thicker lining layer as insulation, I advise you to initially transfer the pattern to the fabric, additionally adding 1-2 cm to the constructed pattern. It is better then, in the process of trying on, to sew in the excess a little, than the overalls will be tight.

So, we transfer all the details of the pattern both to the main (membrane) and to the lining fabric.

Next, we carefully cut everything out, not forgetting to add 1-1.5 cm each for seam allowances.

The most important controller strictly monitors the entire production process!

From the seamy side, on the sides, we sew together the details of the shelf (belly) and backrest. We carry out this operation with both membrane and lining fabric.

During fitting, especially for boys, we check the cutout on the tummy to see if it covers the pouch. After all, the next stage in the manufacture of a jumpsuit will be exactly this part of the product.

We fold the parts of the membrane and lining fabric already sewn on the sides together “face to face” and sew along the bottom, in the tummy area, as shown by the red dotted line.

We turn it out and, in the same way, in the tummy area, only on the front side, we lay an additional finishing line.

So that in the process of the final stitching on the sewing machine the fabric does not “walk”, and the seam is more accurate, I first swept this place by hand with temporary large stitches.

So that in the future the top and lining of the overalls are securely fixed to each other, it is better to additionally sew the side seams on the front side on a typewriter.

We sweep off the shoulder sections and try on the product on the pet. If the jumpsuit fits well in the shoulders, we can safely sew the shoulder cuts on a sewing machine.

But then I recommend trying again to make sure that the armholes of the sleeves do not press on the armpits. If the armhole is tight, it is better to cut off the excess so that later there will be no chafing. Better to be a little freer.

We start sewing in the details of the front paws (let’s call them sleeves).

This is one of the most crucial stages, and there is absolutely no need to rush here. Before you finally sew on the sleeves, I advise you to sweep them into the armhole and try again.

Yes, we have already adjusted the armhole to fit the paws of the pet. But, when sewing, due to the seam, it may also decrease slightly. You may have to cut off the excess one more time. And with intermediate fitting, you can immediately adjust the length of the front paws of the jumpsuit.

So, as a result of fitting, we “adjusted” everything. Now, fold the lining and membrane fabrics of both parts of the paws “face to face” and stitch along the bottom on a sewing machine.

And then, according to the well-known scheme: we turn it out and also add a finishing line along the bottom (as shown by the arrows).

Then you can sew on the sleeves to the jumpsuit. But before doing this, I usually blur the details together. I do this so that they do not move in different directions once again.

It remains only to finally sew everything on a sewing machine.

Well, the front legs (sleeves) are completely ready, we proceed to the details of the hind legs of the overalls.

The scheme is the same: we fold the lining and membrane fabrics of both parts of the paws “face to face”, sew along the bottom from the wrong side, and turn them out.

Now we need to finish the edges of the jumpsuit in the area of the tail and butt.

We turn out this part of the overalls, and from the seamy side we lay a seam on the sewing machine.

And again we turn the jumpsuit right side out, and in the same place (in the area of the tail and butt) we make a finishing line.

And then we fold “face to face” the membrane tissue in the area of the hind legs and sew it where it is shown by the dotted line.

Before we start sewing the lock, we try on it to make sure that our jumpsuit sits on the pet freely, does not squeeze anything anywhere. In addition, we take into account that when sewing in a lock, the jumpsuit “unexpectedly” should not be too tight.

If you suddenly find that there is not enough fabric on the back, and after sewing in the lock, the overalls are tight, then you can “build up” the missing volume by sewing on an additional strap. I have already encountered this once when I sewed a vest for a dog with my own hands. You can read by clicking on the link about how I got out of this situation.

And again we carry out, one might say, already the final fitting. We make sure that nothing presses anywhere in the neck area, since the final stage in making overalls for a dog will be sewing on a collar.

I will not describe the whole process in detail, since there is nothing complicated here. The following photos reflect everything in sufficient detail.

Well, as it turned out, it’s not so difficult to sew a jumpsuit for a dog yourself.

If, after completing the work, you find some flaws: the fabric on the tummy puffs up, or the details of the legs are too wide, and the pet is not very comfortable on the walk, you can make small corrections.

For example, in the area of the tummy, from the inside, additionally sew a wide elastic band (as shown in the master class on making a vest). And the details of the front and hind legs of the overalls can be slightly bent and also sew in rubber bands.

Well, we have already tested the new thing in the field! Jekusik feels great in a new jumpsuit. Apparently, it’s not in vain that we did not skimp on frequent fittings. Everything turned out just great!

Even at the sight of a jumpsuit, my nibbler does not try to hide under the bed, which is very surprising. Probably, he liked the jumpsuit.!

Step-by-step instruction

So, the measurements are made, the pattern is ready and transferred to the material from which you have already cut out the necessary flaps. Baste seams on them to roughly see what should be the final result. We sew cuffs, a neckline, we connect the details on the tummy. Winter overalls for dogs of small, medium and large breeds are fixed on the back with Velcro or zipper.

Tip: If you knit clothes, you can immediately make a single piece without seams. To do this, we knit first the upper part, then move along the rows below.

Do not forget to leave more material in stock, so that you can safely make seams later. After all, it’s always better to remove the excess than to sew, isn’t it?!

Let’s continue our master class. After you have swept away the future product, you should try it on for your pet. If you notice that the product on large and medium-sized pets is short in length, then you can cut it along the belt and at the end insert a ribbon or strap that will decorate the clothes. If the basting is too large, then you can slightly pick it up with an elastic band. You can also make grooves, but this is not always the best option, since in these places, with active movements, the dog can accidentally tear the seam.

Details that are required for sewing the product

When getting acquainted with the sewing technique, it is better to practice first on the fabric that you do not mind. Then it is already possible to transfer accurate measurements to the good material used.

When examining the basting on a pet, you must finally make sure where to remove and where to insert fabric. On the seams, you can subsequently sew (or tie) special ribbons (edging). Well, if there is material left, then you can decorate the product with s.

On the bottom of the cuffs on pants and sleeves, turn-ups should be made, into which an elastic band or lace must be inserted. This will make it easier to adjust the size of the product. For decoration, you can knit ruffles, different edging and stripes. In addition, some owners of large, small and medium-sized dogs decide to knit hats for their pets! The video tells in detail and interestingly about clothes for four-legged.

The finishing touch to our workshop will be a zip or Velcro patch on the back. It is better not to use buttons and ties, since in this case holes are formed through which cold air will enter. For convenience and to prevent wool from getting into the zipper, you can sew or knit a bar under it.

Required sewing tools

Before knitting or sewing any warm clothes, you need to prepare all the necessary tools. In this case, in addition to scissors, fabric and patterns, we also need a zipper, an elastic band (lace) and fasteners for cuffs (collars). All items can be medium or large, depending on the breed of the dog. As for the material, it is still better to choose one that will not disintegrate along the threads.

Well, you can knit with knitting needles or crochet using warm wool-like threads. For those owners who do not know how to sew a jumpsuit for a dog, our step-by-step instructions.

The right material for dog clothes

In the choice of material, the main role is played not by beauty, but by practicality. Judge for yourself, the dog will be much warmer and more comfortable in a waterproof dense fabric than in artificial clothing with net inserts. Good in all respects, overalls for dogs are more advisable to sew from raincoat fabric, bolognese material, dense microfiber or any other fabric that repels moisture. For a better insulating effect, you can also add an inner warm lining to the product, which can be knitted or made from insulation.

Sorry, there are currently no polls available.

If you are “friends” with knitting needles, you can knit a simple sleeveless jacket on your dog, which you will wear under the overalls in cold weather. Fur and viscose can also act as a heater. Warm little things will keep your pet healthy and clean during the cold season. Read a master class on knitting and patterns below in the article.

Taking measurements from the dog

We measure the distance from the middle of the neck to the base of the tail, which we subsequently divide into eight parts to find out the length of the cage in the pattern.

This must be done before you start preparing your sewing pattern. The main parameter will be the distance from the collar to the beginning of the tail. It must be divided by eight. The resulting number will be equal to the size of one square on the pattern sheet. We knit products not according to the pattern, but according to the measurements of volumes.

Next, you need to measure the volume of the neck, paws (front and back), as well as the chest in its widest part. over, all these actions are suitable for both small and large and medium-sized dogs. In order to make clothes without jewelry accuracy in measurements, it is enough to take such a standard pattern, which will become the basis for a comfortable and slightly loose jumpsuit. If you decide to knit clothes, you can use your individual experience in measurements. We knit the product the way we are used to working with knitting needles and threads.

For those who do not know how to sew, but loves to knit

If you like to knit, you can make a blouse or the same jumpsuit from warm woolen threads for your pet. To do this, we first knit a collar, then move on to the design of the chest, not forgetting to leave holes for the front paws. While we knit, we measure the length of the product and compare it with the size of the dog. These things are also suitable for both small and large dogs.

The advantage of this option is that you can knit not only blouses, but also hats, scarves for your favorite dogs of small and large breeds. If you know how to sew and knit, you can please your pet with a raincoat overalls and a warm woolen scarf. You can also build a beautiful pattern on the product using threads. The pet will not be able to tear the product with its paws, since it will not reach the fabric with its claws.

The diagram shows the necessary measurements for knitting a jumpsuit. Neck 21 cm, front legs 10 cm, hind legs 15 cm, distance from withers to edge of chest 35 cm.The product is suitable for a medium-sized dog.

Knitting or crocheting can also be used to knit items for clothing for dogs of large and medium breeds: cuffs, collars, collars made of bright threads look very beautiful. Well, for the exclusivity of the product, we knit the nickname of the dog. Today on the network you can find many descriptions of instructions and master classes, according to which we knit products for our pets. It remains only to choose the most suitable option. Just remember that sometimes it is better to walk a dog (both medium and large) without any clothes.

Cooking a pattern

So, let’s start our master class on making a standard overalls for a dog of any breed of small or medium size. To begin with, we will prepare a pattern on paper, which we will subsequently use to transfer measurements to fabric. In fact, sewing a jumpsuit for dogs with your own hands is not so difficult. Well, if we knit, then we should get pleasure from the process.!

make, pattern, jumpsuit

The standard sewing pattern for a warm overalls looks the same for small, medium and large breeds. Its description is easy to find on the Internet, you can build it on a computer or do it manually. If you prefer the second option, then for this you need to take a sheet of paper or graph paper and draw squares of the same size on it. Later, using this pattern, you will adjust the size of the jumpsuit to suit your pet.

The standard pattern includes the following values: ZK. back length, AB = BG. distance between paws, ZZh. tail, KD. neck, FM, BN. hind legs, GL, DI. front paws.

Tip: you do not need to sew clothes that completely fit the body of the animal. Whatever you sew or decide to knit, it is better to make the clothes free, not restricting movement. The pants should be long enough, but not dragged along the ground. It is better to complete the cuffs on the legs and the collar with an elastic band or drawstring to adjust the size.

Our sewing pattern consists of two identical sized pieces and one piece for the belly. In this case, the distance of the ZK segment exactly corresponds to the length from the neck to the tail.
