How To Wean A Cat To Climb The Table Foil

5 ways to stop your cat from climbing on the table and windowsill

Cats are very curious animals that love to climb higher, play with various objects, and do not mind at all “intercepting” something tasty. What place meets such a cat’s aspirations? You can’t think of anything better than a table, especially a kitchen table. Although the windowsills and shelves are also very tempting for the tailed.

How to solve the problem radically? That is, to make sure that the cat does not climb on the table, shelves, windowsill even when you are not at home?

The development of a conditioned reflex is the most reliable way. Five easy tricks to wean your cat away from wildlife walks.

1. Create an inconvenience for the cat: lay the objects on the table (windowsill) so that the cat, jumping there, will certainly drop something. Put at least lids from saucepans, even aluminum cans or unnecessary books. Cats have a very developed sense of balance, so falling is extremely unpleasant for them. And if the fall is also accompanied by a loud noise, then you will get a double effect.

2. Here we are smoothly and come to the second rule. Cats hate loud, harsh sounds. Therefore, when you are at home, then any encroachment of a cat into the forbidden territory, accompany with various unpleasant sounds. To do this, you can use any children’s musical instruments, squeaky toys, and even the same saucepan lids. If only the sound was unexpected and loud.

3. The sense of smell of a cat helps her to track down prey in nature, but for us it will help to ward off her from forbidden places. Cats can’t stand strong odors. Vinegar is found in every home. smear the surfaces with vinegar, and the cat will disdainfully bypass them. Citrus fruits also irritate the delicate scent of cats, but orange or lemon aromatic oil works better than any orange peel. They are now sold in any pharmacy. By the way, it is not necessary to get hung up on the smell of citrus fruits, almost any aroma oil is very unpleasant for cats, because. The smell is very intense.

4. There is another popular method, although it is simple, but surprisingly effective. Make the table surface (windowsill) sticky, unpleasant for the cat. The easiest way to do this is to use double-sided tape. Our favorite little predators are very clean, and the discomfort from sticky tape will not add to their desire to repeat the unpleasant experience.

5. And finally, an extremely effective remedy. a conventional spray bottle. Pussies are not fans of water procedures, there is nothing more disgusting for them than an unexpected cold shower. The main thing is to make sure that the cat does not associate you with these unpleasant sensations, otherwise it will develop a negative reflex to your appearance. Therefore, spray the offender with water so that she does not suspect you are involved.

If you apply at least some of these rules, then you will not have to mourn the remains of your favorite cup, from which it was so pleasant to drink coffee in the morning. And you don’t have to be surprised to learn one morning that you have been eating from the same plate with your cat for several years. Even headstrong beasts like cats lend themselves to education.

Fragrant repeller

A cat’s nose is the strongest indicator of odors. He can pick up the scent in just a few molecules. And strong and haunting odors act like an explosion on animals.

For the cat to stop attending the table, it is enough to “aromatize” the countertop with odors unpleasant for the pet:

  • You can rub the surface with a piece of lemon or orange. The method is effective, but the scent will have to be updated periodically.
  • Natural aromatic oils. It is enough to saturate the fabric with them and leave it on the table. Not a single cat will stick into the danger zone. However, it is worth choosing pleasant options, so as not to wean from the table and household.
  • Oil burner. A good way to wean your pet and at the same time transform the atmosphere in the house. The same aromatic oils are poured into the lamp, a drop of water is added and the candle is lit. Floral trail will turn the table into a real cat’s nightmare.

Foil coating

The method resembles the previous one, but it is more secure. This method is not suitable for small kittens. Better to use it against adult deliberate offenders. Plain foil will help wean cats to climb the table.

The edges of the countertop are wrapped with food foil, slightly crushing it. The layer will quickly take the shape of the countertop and will not give itself out.

Next, the cat tries to jump in a familiar pattern. Its front legs cling to the foil, and it slides off. Animal falls.

Splashes and waves

Not a bad method, but it will require the constant presence of the owner to implement it. And during the experiment, the friendship of a person and a cat may suffer.

So, every time the cat jumps on the table, it is sprayed with warm water from a spray bottle. And every time he is certainly angry with a person, because the shooter will not go unnoticed.

The duration of the method depends on the persistence of the cat. Some test subjects quit after the first shower. Others will need a few generous waves to learn the lesson. If you act systematically, you can very quickly wean a cat from climbing on the table.

The disadvantage of the method is that the cat will clearly connect the person of the owner and the intrusive spray. Therefore, she will certainly walk on the table, left alone at home. Leaving valuables and food in plain sight is not recommended.

The reasons for the lawlessness

To catch a cat, you have to think like a cat. Therefore, first it is worth figuring out why the fluffy climbs the dining table. There may be many reasons for this.

Why does the cat walk on the table:

  • He investigates. Little kittens ignore the rules unconsciously. Toddlers explore the world and try not to miss any interesting details. Everything must be sniffed and overturned.
  • Delicious smell. As a rule, the table smells of food, and a rare cat does not stretch its muzzle to catch the meaty aromas. But animals’ sense of smell is much stronger, so they even smell traces of food. That is why cats jump even on an empty table.
  • Passion for height. Predators love to climb trees to observe their territory from a height. There are no tall plants at home, so you have to adapt.
  • Plots the route. Sometimes the table is not the end point of the cat’s route. If the furniture is on the way to the window, the woolen one will walk over it without even noticing its “offense”.
  • Heats up. Sometimes it is cold on the floor or there are drafts. Heat-loving murks are looking for a secluded place to sleep, and this place may even be a dining tabletop.
  • Hungry for attention. The most risky action. Some cats sit right in front of the dining host. It is unlikely that they are praised for this, but pets are trying to attract the attention of the owner with their immodest persona.

No matter how beloved the pet is, it is undesirable for him to climb onto the table. First, there may be food that animals cannot eat. Secondly, hygiene must be observed. After all, the paws that set foot on the table have just come out of the toilet. Don’t forget about wool. They say that in a house with a cat, nap is a seasoning. But it is better to eliminate this “spice” from food.

Simple life hacks from experienced owners will help wean a cat from a bad habit.

Loud sounds

Hearing in predators is as acutely developed as sense of smell. And this can be adopted. It is enough to prepare a few balloons. As soon as the cat climbs on the table, the owner must burst the bubble.

A loud pop will scare the cat away. But it is important to repeat the procedure several times. In this case, it is better to leave the rest of the balls on the same table.

Unexpected fall

The method is somewhat inhumane, but one session may be enough for the cat to forget the way to the table. A light plastic tray is needed to complete the plan.

The tabletop is furnished with “uncomfortable” objects so that only one side remains free. Bottles and pots are useful as an impromptu fence. A tray is placed on the free side, slightly pushing it over the edge of the tabletop. You can pour some water into the tray itself.

Further events can be predicted. The cat does not want to jump on the tray, but there is no choice, because the whole table is busy. The animal jumps up, knocking over the tray. Water pours onto the cat, and the container itself falls to the floor with a crash.

Extreme measures

If the water and scotch don’t work, it’s time to move on to heavy artillery. The method can be considered an extreme measure, so it is better to resort to it after the previous points.

If the need for weaning is more important than the morale of the cat, the rug can be purchased. It is better to do the weaning procedure under close supervision.

The kindest way

It is rumored that there is an owner who managed to raise a cat using this method. But only owners with colossal patience and nerves of steel can use it. The method is to distract the animal and encourage good behavior.

Every time you try to climb onto the table, the cat is distracted. You can simply summon her or lure her with food. Kittens are attracted by the game. Replacing the pet’s motivation with a stronger one can wean him from the bad habit.

If the cat jumped on the table for the owner’s attention, then the attempts to attract the person will become stronger. When the pet has become too intrusive, then it is enough to regularly play with it in order to scare away from the kitchen table.

Effective ways

The following methods can help wean a cat from climbing tables:.

  • A fall. Pay attention to which side he usually jumps on the table from. Place a large tray in there so that it looks over the edge of the countertop. Now, if a cat tries to climb onto the table, it will fall with a crash. Do not worry about her, the cat will most likely land on four paws and not be injured in any way, but the noise combined with the fall will scare her and reduce the desire to travel to forbidden places.
  • Smells. There are smells that cats simply hate. Usually these are citrus fruits, eucalyptus, cloves. The most affordable way to deal with the problem is with citrus fruits, they can be found in any home. Spread out the lemon or orange peels generously, but remember to change them every few days, and rub the table with the juices of these fruits. Essential oils with unloved aromas have an equally rich smell. They can be rubbed into the table or poured into an aroma lamp.
  • Foil. This rustling material with a mirrored surface can help you keep your cat from climbing the table. To do this, wrap its edges with this material so that it is enough not only for the edge of the tabletop, but also partially for its surface. The foil will immediately take the shape of a table and lock, but as soon as the cat jumps on it, slightly pulling up on its front paws, it will immediately fly down. This method is considered completely safe.
  • Scotch. If you are not afraid that traces of adhesive tape will remain on the table, then you can safely use this method. Place duct tape around the perimeter of the dining area and secure it slightly. When the cat once again climbs on the table, he will be very surprised and frightened by the sticking of the tape on his paws. In addition, the adhesive will have to be licked out of wool for a long time.
  • Splashing water. This method can only be used when near the pet. As soon as you see that he jumped on the table, spray it with water from a spray bottle, while aiming directly at him in the face. This method is more effective in raising kittens, then jumping on the table will be associated with water. Ideally, you should spray water from a shelter so that the cat does not understand anything. Then the method may be suitable for the re-education of adults.
  • Iron sheet. To make the animal not want to jump on the table, put a sheet of iron on it so that when it jumps, a crash is heard on it. However, any surface that makes loud noises when touched will work. Noise scares cats and helps discipline these wayward creatures.
  • Promotion. Not every owner can go this way, because he requires a lot of patience, care and attention. Its essence is as follows: as soon as you see that the cat wants to jump on the table, distract him with a toy or a treat, while praising. This should be done constantly for a long time. only then can you see the result of your efforts. For owners who love their cats very much and cannot apply inhumane parenting methods to them, this option is best suited.
  • Electricity. There are special devices with weak current discharges, they have very low power, so they do not harm the health of the animal. The effect of such a charge will be felt by the pet as a strong click. The most “formidable” variant of this series is a collar with a remote control, which gives a weak shock when a button is pressed. Usually such gadgets are used by dog owners, but some use them for educational purposes with cats as well. There are ultrasonic collars that can also scare away an animal.

Reasons for walking

Before you start fighting your tailed rebel, try to figure out what pushes it to jump onto the dining surface. Perhaps, you just need to understand the situation and then you won’t have to “fight” with your pet anymore. the problem will be solved by itself.

  • It is believed that this behavior is characteristic of these animals due to their natural curiosity and fussiness. Since cats by nature love to explore new things, they can jump on the table solely for this purpose. In this case, in order to get rid of the addiction of the animal, you just need to keep the table empty and clean.
  • Cats jump on the table in search of food. For them, the resulting food becomes a prey, which they “hunt”, such are their instincts. To prevent such theft, you need not only to keep the tables clean, but also not to forget to feed your pet. When you leave home, make sure there is always some food in her bowl. Well-fed cats usually don’t bother examining tables.
  • Some animals are tempted to arrange a bed where food is present. From the point of view of a person, sitting or sleeping on the table is somehow strange, but cats don’t think so, besides the table is a high surface, which is very popular with these lovers of climbing higher. They gladly climb onto the dining surface, where they feel very comfortable, stretch out to their full height and fall asleep sweetly. In this case, to wean the animal from the addiction, you need to create a worthy alternative to it.
  • Some cats just like the high position of the tabletop, because on the dais they feel superior over others. If your four-legged friend really likes to watch what is happening from this position, try to equip him with a special shelf in the kitchen. The structure can be nailed directly to the wall at the level of the table, but at a distance from it. The pet will definitely appreciate that the owner has made a personal “cat place”.
  • During the cold season, cats seek warmth. As a rule, the higher the surface, the warmer it is, so cats climb onto cabinets and tables. In this case, the cat needs to create a warm place. For example, move the chair close to the heating appliance so that it can climb onto the back and lie down. Turn off laptops and table lamps located on the dining table so that they do not heat it up and make it even more attractive in the eyes of the animal.
  • Sometimes the table attracts curious cats as a window seat from which to admire the street scenery. You should not deprive your pet of this joy, because he already has to live within four walls. To get rid of the problem, draw back the curtains, so the cat will understand that you need to climb on the windowsill or move the table away from the window. And so that she has an incentive to climb exactly on the windowsill, make a small bird feeder outside the window, but do not forget to close the window when the birds eat, otherwise the fluffy pet may get carried away by hunting and fall out of the window.

Expert advice

Experts in feline psychology claim that these animals hate screaming. The owner’s “scolding” intonation and loud screams frighten them. Having experienced such a shock several times, pets can abandon the idea of climbing tables forever. Of course, this can only work if you don’t usually yell at your cat for other reasons and do not appear in front of him angry every day.

You can look him in the eye and scold the animal severely. Cats are smart enough and often these methods work with them more effectively than physical punishment.

In addition, at a young age, shock methods such as screaming or pouring water work better on animals. As inhuman as it may sound, kittens learn well the lessons learned from this method. The main thing is not to overdo it, so that the animal does not get scared more than necessary.

Raising a cat is a complex process that requires patience and a smart approach. But for a loving and caring owner, nothing is impossible. If you want to teach the animal the rules of behavior in the house, then over time you will certainly achieve this. The main thing is to find out the reason for the bad behavior of the cat and try to eliminate it.

In the next, you can visually familiarize yourself with one of the options for weaning a cat from climbing the table.

Praise will stop your cat from climbing tables.

A sophisticated method that requires titanic patience and attention is praise. Your job is not to punish or scare your animal, but to praise it for good behavior. The algorithm of actions is as follows:

If you see that the cat is about to jump on the table, you need to distract him with a toy and generously give treats for good behavior.

The game satisfies feline prey hunting needs

If there are no toys nearby, then you can take the kitten in another way. As a last resort, a pet can be distracted with a bowl.

Perhaps it will be a disadvantage for you that the cat constantly follows you. In no case should you be annoyed. Domestic cats are social and if your pet asks for companionship, then he should get it. Table jumping is the least of what the owner of a neglected pet can face.

Duct tape

The most effective and quickest way to correct your pet’s behavior is tape. Minus. the tape may leave marks on the table.

So, all you need is double-sided tape. For this method, it is necessary to build a sticky frame by spreading small pieces of adhesive tape around the perimeter (the length reaches 12 cm). When your pet jumps, he will stick to him, than the cat will be discouraged. In addition, a sticky base will remain on its paws, which will take a very long time to lick.

It is better not to use this method if you have:

  • Long-haired cat. It is almost impossible to comb out the sticky base from the wool, you just have to cut it.
  • Shy animal. Once trapped, a cat can be seriously scared.

Electricity is the last hope

It should be borne in mind that the cat is much more sensitive to the shock than the person. A light prick will feel like a strong click to your pet. The rug should only be laid when you are at home. An alternative option can also be an ultrasonic or electric collar, which is controlled by a remote control.

Smells

Your pet’s sense of smell is several times sharper than that of humans. It is known that cats are extremely negative about citrus and the smell of eucalyptus.

Some cats are comfortable with citrus smells.

You can use an orange or half a lemon. It should be understood that the smell disappears quickly enough, therefore, to achieve a positive result, the peels will have to be changed every few days. That is why it is best to use essential oils, which are absorbed into the surface for a long time. If you do not want to rub the table itself, then you can cover it with a sheet.

You can also pour oil into an aroma lamp, which is left overnight. The cat will try in every possible way to avoid a negative smell and simply will not come to the table. The only drawback of this method is that if it didn’t help the first time, it won’t help. If the cat’s curiosity is much stronger than his irritation, then you will have to resort to other methods.

Foil

A cat can be taught to jump on tables using foil. As in the first case, you just need to determine from which side your pet jumps onto the table, blocking all other paths.

As a rule, a cat, jumping on the table, pulls up on its front legs. It is necessary to wrap the edges of the table with foil and do not fix anything. The flexible foil will quickly take shape, but will slip when grabbing onto the edge of the table. Unlike the first, this method is absolutely safe. But it is better not to use it when raising a kitten, because it can fall and simply hurt itself.

How to stop a kitten from climbing the table?

So, a small kitten has appeared in your house, which requires attention, care and affection. However, he also needs a good upbringing. over, sometimes it is necessary to educate and train not only a fluffy baby, but also an adult cat or cat.

Many owners think that love for an animal and permissiveness are one and the same. But this approach is fundamentally wrong, since a good upbringing of a pet is, first of all, its safety. There are many cases when cats and cats accustomed to permissiveness fell out of the windows, received burns due to their excessive love of climbing on tables and hobs. And such examples are countless.

If the cat wants to climb onto the table, find out the reason for this desire

Therefore, taking an animal into a family, it is necessary to educate it, suppress and correct bad habits, not allowing unnecessary things. As a result of proper upbringing, the animal must accept the rules of the house in which it lives. One of these bad habits is table climbing. Felines’ innate love for height beckons them to window sills, tables and other surfaces that are above floor level!

Why cats love to climb the table?

  • Hunter Instinct. As a rule, there is always something interesting for the cat on the table, and an object or delicacy that has intrigued the pet can be “obtained” on your own.
  • Observation. Cats, unlike other animals, are extremely inquisitive and patient. They like to be in places from which they can clearly see everything. The movement of the owners, the games of small children, observation of a flying fly. all this arouses the interest of the cat.
  • Safety. Cats love to be safe and comfortable. Sitting on the table, they feel out of reach of “enemies”.
  • Manifestation of character. Cats and cats are creatures with character. Once in the house, they consider it their own territory, where they are allowed everything. It happens that they show character as a reaction to oppression and prohibitions.

Thus, there are many reasons why cats and cats climb the table. And in order to wean an animal from this bad habit, you must first understand its motives.

Weaning a kitten from table climbing is much easier than re-educating a cat

How to wean a cat from table climbing?

  • Method number 1. For the little ones. The best way to wean a kitten from table climbing is simple and trivial. not to accustom your pet to this activity. Often the owners, without noticing this, themselves contribute to the fact that the pet begins to climb onto the table. A striking example of this is feeding an animal from the table. That is, an animal from a very early age begins to understand that there is something edible for it on the table. Therefore, do not feed the kitten from your plate, but immediately accustom him to eating in a specially designated place.
  • Method number 2. Cleanliness. Remove all objects that attract the cat from the table. Jumping onto an unusually empty table, the cat will quickly understand that there is nothing interesting here, and gradually interest in this addiction will fade away.
  • Method number 3. Foil. Using double-sided tape, attach the foil around the entire perimeter of the table, and glue several strips of the same tape over the foil. When the cat jumps on the table, it will quickly get embarrassed: he will clearly not like the rustling, cold and unpleasant foil for paws. And the sticky strips will further enhance the negative impressions of the once beloved table, which will finally discourage the cat from climbing on it.
  • Method number 4. Tray with water. Clear the table of all objects. Place a tray filled with a little water on it so that the cat will jump on the table and wet its paws. Such a surprise will obviously not please the pet, and he will quickly unlearn to climb the table.
  • Method number 5. Heating pads. Get a regular rubber heating pad. Their number depends on the area of the table, since it is important to completely “cover” the table with heating pads. Fill each heating pad with a different amount of water and close tightly. Use double-sided tape to attach the heating pads to the table. When the cat is on an overly soft and uneven surface, which, moreover, also “gurgles” under the paws, he is unlikely to stay on the table and come back here again.
  • Method number 6. Tablecloth and magazines. Lay a thin tablecloth or tulle on the table, which, after a light touch, falls to the floor. Arrange magazines, newspapers, or notebooks around the edges. The main thing is that the selected objects are not too heavy and do not injure the animal. If there are chairs nearby, remove them for the safety of the animal. As soon as the cat tries to jump onto the table, the tablecloth will roll down along with the press. The cat will be scared away and he is unlikely to risk repeating such a trick again. Important! This method is not suitable for kittens, elderly cats and unhealthy animals for whom stress can turn into serious health problems.
  • Method number 7. Spray gun. Use a spray bottle filled with plain water or deterrent to ward off the cat from the table. This method is suitable if the cat jumps on the table in your presence.
  • Method number 8. Citrus aroma. Place napkins on the table, scented with any citrus oil: orange, lemon, bergamot, lime. Cats do not tolerate this smell, and therefore such a “scarer” will definitely help in the process of raising a cat.
  • Method number 9. Reporting. If the cat or cat strives to be on the table in your presence, look the animal in the eyes and scold him severely. In most cases, this works, as cats are well aware when their actions go beyond what is permitted. Yes, they do not understand speech, but they very clearly capture the intonation and emotions of a person.
  • Method number 10. Newspaper swing. You can scare the cat away with a light slap of the newspaper. But in no case with a hand, because the cat is already used to the hand stroking and caressing. A slap with a newspaper will be received with indignation, and henceforth the cat will be afraid of the rustling sound of the newspaper.

And remember: no matter how naughty your cat is, under no circumstances should you hit the animal. This can injure him physically and mentally, scare him too much, put him in a state of stress. In some cases, beating turns a cat into an aggressive and very stubborn animal. Often, animals punished in this way try to annoy the owner even more. Try to resolve the conflict without extreme measures.
