Causes of a bad habit
Almost all dog breeds have hunting predilections. The habit of sniffing and searching is at the genetic level. Most of the smells make dogs want to taste the find. Pet instincts do not fade away even with a well-fed life at home.
Most of the smells make dogs want to taste the find.
This instinct delivers special problems to the owners in case of psychological trauma of the dog. This happens mainly after the experienced hunger, vagrancy. Many “shelters” also sin by picking food from the ground according to the old habit.
Another reason for the transformation of the tailed friend into a “vacuum cleaner” may be physical ailment. With vitamin deficiencies, the presence of worms, pregnancy, teething, the lack of trace elements in the body distorts the taste perception. Thus, the dog begins to absorb everything that seems appetizing to him. from pieces of old food to sand, pebbles and feces.
How to wean a dog to pick up food on the street depends on the cause of the problem. The variant with a lack of minerals is treated in a complex with the addition of drugs on the recommendation of veterinarians. The rest of the cases are corrected by persistent behavior correction.
Electroshock collar (ESHO)
The fixing of dog “vacuum cleaners” with the help of electricity has been used for a very long time. Initially, the electric magneto was placed in a shelter, connecting terminals to raw meat. When the dog tried to grab such a bait, the handle of the device was twisted, and a current beat the tailed beast. The idea had an effect, but it was difficult to implement in a domestic environment.
Electroshock collars now exist. ESHO simplified the method several times. They are controlled by consoles, so you just need to keep an eye on the ward. If necessary, the button is pressed, the pet receives its punishment.
You can effectively and quickly wean a dog from picking up food using an electric shock collar.
There are two modes of action in electroshock collars: warning and shock. When you first try to pick up food from the ground, it is the current pulse that is sent. For subsequent ones, it is sufficient to use a perceptible vibration. As a rule, such a correction gives an effect already in 3-4 incidents. For complete confidence, the training can be repeated after 1-2 months. Some training centers give ESHOs for rent.
The main advantage of this method is the absence of suspicion of the owner, which means the exclusion of a conflict. Not recommended for small dog breeds.
A loud whistle, a sports or children’s “pipe” is used. When a dog tries to pick up a fake or found food from the ground, a sharp unpleasant signal is given.
The method must be used carefully. keep a distance from the dog, so as not to damage your hearing. It is also important not to overdo it and develop a fear of loud sounds in general.
Fake physical punishment situation
Pieces of food are scattered over the selected area. The bait should not have the smell of the owner, so the preparation should be carried out by a stranger or a breeder wearing rubber gloves. Walking begins within a radius of 3-4 meters from the target location. The approach comes naturally, gradually.
When the dog picks up the first prepared piece, one of the scenarios is carried out:
Pull up the leash with the “Fu!” Command. STIHL, equanimity, firmness and clarity of voice are respected. The situation is repeated up to 4 times in one trip. It is necessary to observe the moderation of the jerk so that it is felt, but does not harm the tailed friend.
If the dog picks up a piece on the street, pull up the leash and say “Ugh!”.
IMPORTANT. The command “Fu” must be pronounced BEFORE applying physical pressure. This is how the reflex of obedience is developed.
Some lay people advise putting delicious-smelling goodies in mousetraps. This method is unsafe and not recommended by experienced breeders.
Fake “peppercorn” situation
Pieces of food sprinkled with mustard or pepper are laid out on the dummy territory. You can also stuff the inside of the treats with ready-made mustard. Most dogs spit out what they find on their own, be wary of new pieces. However, there are times when the pet likes the spicy taste and the training fails.
Pieces of food sprinkled with mustard or pepper are laid out on the dummy territory.
The method is not practiced for a long time and often, so as not to discourage the scent and perception of food.
Training Tips EN. Part 49 Refusing dog food from strangers
IMPORTANT. It is carried out only if you are sure that the tailed friend has no intolerance to seasonings! Spices are used sparingly so as not to burn the mucous membranes of the nose and mouth.
How to teach your dog to stop taking food from strangers?
Thousands of dogs die at the hands of doghunters and just ill-wishers. How to teach a dog not to take food from strangers and not become a victim of a person who will either poison the animal or simply steal it? How to train your dog to eat from one hand?
The last question contains the answer: from the very moment it appears in the house, a puppy (or an adult dog) should eat exclusively from the owner’s hands. Only as an exception, the trainer will give a treat if you go to a training group, and even then, only at the very beginning to demonstrate a particular team. Only one owner should feed and give goodies.!
How to wean a dog from taking food from strangers?
Only the owner feeds. It is important! Don’t even let your friends indulge in “such a cute fluffy furball” goodies. Weaning to take from the floor. First of all, you need to wean off picking food from the ground, and only then teach the dog not to take food from strangers. Read more about weaning in the article at the link. By the way, earlier than 3 months it is impossible to wean to take from the floor and, moreover, from the wrong hands. Teach a puppy from 3 to 5 months not to take food from someone else’s hands as follows. Place the puppy near the left leg saying “sit” (this requires the command to sit). Ask your friend or acquaintance to offer the puppy a piece of tasty food (sausage, smoked sausage, etc.) and hold it near the puppy’s nose for 5-10 seconds. As soon as the puppy tries to take food. give a strict “fu” command and make a jerk with the leash towards you. Have a friend offer food to the puppy again. Did he try to eat it again? Then say “phew” again and make an even stricter pull with the leash. To get things done quickly, try to figure out how to teach your dog commands using a mechanical stimulus. The jerk must be strong enough so that the next time she is offered food by a friend, she thought: “If I take food, I’ll get it in the neck from the owner. I’d rather not take it. ” Rough, but we are not doing this out of malice! If the puppy refuses to eat next time, be sure to give him even more delicious treats from your hands. The animal should know that from the owner, in case of refusing to take from the wrong hands, it will receive something much tastier. Puppies from 5 months and adult dogs weaned to take food from strangers by more aggressive methods. Let your friend, preferably not the person whom the dog often sees, offer a piece of delicacy from his hand and hold it under the dog’s nose for 10-15 seconds. As soon as the dog tries to take food, he will immediately receive a tangible slap in the face. Do not overdo it with force, find the “golden mean”. If the dog tries to eat it again before giving food to strangers again, let the assistant slap it even harder. All this time you should stand with the dog near your left leg. If the animal turns away from the offered treat. let the assistant step back a few steps, and you generously praise the dog and give a tasty treat. If the animal gets up and hides behind you in response to the food offered by the assistant (for 10-15 seconds). let the assistant step back, and you will praise the dog with the dacha treats. It is already very good that she does not take food. If the dog behaves aggressively in response to the proposed treat, then the owners of breeds, which are not characterized by aggression, should not be too strict, but prohibit aggression with the command “fu”. Make sure that the dog growls, but does not rush at the person.
That is, refusal to eat should be encouraged even in the case of aggressive behavior of the dog. If she rushes to the assistant for the offered food. for such aggression it is better, instead of a delicacy, to give a not very strict, prohibiting command “fu”. Thanks to the persistent actions of the owner, the dog will understand that there is no need to react to the proposed treat with an attack. Owners of serious breeds, designed to protect the owner and guard, should encourage aggressive behavior of the pet in response to a treat offered by a stranger.
For example, the helper offered food, and the dog began to growl for this. encourage and give treats. If rushed. also encourage with your voice, and after encouragement (after 4-5 seconds), sit the dog near the left leg on the command “sit”, and then again generously praise and give a tasty treat. Learn to control any aggression of the dog, otherwise there will be trouble!
What you need to remember?
I. How much to practice refusing to eat? Practice refusing food 2 times a week for a month. This is enough. After 1-2 months, let the dog be offered some treats, and you will see how it reacts. It may be necessary to work on weaning more.
II. Development of aggression. Remember that if you are encouraging the dog to attack the helper for the treat, you are developing anger by approving it. Uncontrolled anger is dangerous for others and the owners themselves, so a serious approach to obedience is needed. Training is very important and will help keep your dog’s behavior and anger in particular under control. Just train and achieve the execution of commands, then the dog will be perfectly obedient and you will use its aggression only when necessary, and not when she herself wants it.
After teaching the dog the commands, you will need to go to the dog handler, who will give a course to protect the owner. Depending on your accomplishments, it will take several obedience classes. First you need to learn to control the dog, since it is not difficult to develop anger even for the most fearful and hopeless creature! Read more in the article about how to teach a dog the command “fas” by the link.
III. Provocation. The helper should be persistent in offering food if the dog refuses. Let him slip the food closer to the nose, say something affectionate, like: “My good! Here, eat. ” That is, you should simulate a real situation.
That’s all. Working out this command is not as difficult as it might seem. Either way, the effort is worth the dog’s life. By the way, before training, get in a good mood and watch how the kid in the video below tries to take food from the dog.
How to wean a dog from taking food from strangers
CONDITIONAL stimulus: command “Fu” as a signal to stop undesirable actions of the dog.
Unconditioned stimuli: jerk with a leash, blow with a whip, use of a parforce, an electric collar, an electric inductor. The “Refusal of food” technique must be introduced after the main methods of the general training course and continue to work it out in different conditions throughout the entire period of training of service dogs.
Method and technique of making a habit The daily observance of the following conditions helps to make this habit:. the dog must be fed exclusively by the trainer at the same time at least twice a day;. the amount of food and its calorie content must meet the required norm, depending on the workload; during feeding it is forbidden to develop greed for food in the dog.
For this purpose, do not disturb the dog while eating food; when developing the initial reflex, the dog must be well-fed and in normal condition;. do not allow the brothers to eat food found on the ground or thrown and offered by strangers.
Habit practice should be started 3-4 hours after feeding the dogs. The trainer places the food container near the enclosure. Takes the dog on a short leash, brings it to the tank, sits down at 1
2 meters in front of him. When the dog tries to approach the tank, the trainer gives the command “Fu” in a stern tone, makes a jerk with the leash and does not allow the dog to reach the tank with food, gives the command “Sit”.
After 20-30 seconds of exposure, the trainer takes the food container, puts it in the aviary and allows the food to be eaten, giving the command “eat”. While eating food, the trainer is next to the dog, then walks him.
After a series of such associations, the dog produces a conditioned reflex to the “fu” command in 5-6 days, and it will not, without the owner’s permission. The exposure time in front of the food container is up to 3-5 minutes. After that, the dog develops the habit of not taking food from a stranger, both in the presence and in the absence of the trainer.
The handler ties the dog to a tree or hedge with a chain. An instructed helper, holding a piece of meat or bone in his hand, and a stick in the other (behind his back), calmly and confidently approaches the dog and offers him a treat. When the dog tries to take meat, the trainer gives the command “Fas”, pointing to the assistant, and the assistant hits the dog with a stick and runs away to the shelter. First, the helper, when leaving the dog, takes the meat with him, and then throws it in front of the dog so that he can get it. The trainer repeats the commands “Fas”, “Good” and encourages the dog by stroking.
If the dog tries to get the thrown meat, the handler gives the command “Fu” in a threatening tone and makes a jerk with a leash. If the dog does not respond to meat, the trainer quickly approaches it, encourages it by stroking and treating it. The lesson should be carried out by changing the location, helpers, and the nature of their actions.
In the future, the helper does not come close to the dog, but throws a treat to the dog from a distance and leaves. When the dog tries to take a treat, the trainer gives the command “Fu”, and then “Fas”. It is recommended that the dog be allowed to stop the helper. The lesson from training the dog not to take food found on the ground is as follows:.
The assistant places pieces of meat or bone near clearly visible landmarks. The trainer takes the dog on a short leash and, walking with the dog through the area where the treat is laid out, carefully observes its behavior. In the case when the dog, having caught the smell of meat, tries to take it, the trainer gives the command “Fu” and makes a sharp jerk with the leash, after which it continues to move. Further, the conditions of the lesson become more complicated. The trainer takes the dog on a long leash and, wiggling, leads him to the place where the scattered pieces of meat are. If the dog does not pay attention to the meat, then the trainer, on the command “Walk”, continues to walk the dog.
In the case when the dog, having heard the smell of delicacies, tries to take them, the trainer gives the command “Fu”, makes a jerk with the leash, and at the command “Walk” continues to walk. Dogs that show a strong food reaction should walk on a short leash in the first days of training muzzled. If the dog has a predominantly food reaction and does not refuse food, you can use an inductor that gives a current of no more than 0.05 A, a voltage of 16 W or a special electric collar.
After the dog has developed the initial habit of refusing food, complications are introduced into the training process:. classes are held in different territories, at different times of the day;. different types of food are used;. the dog is guided without a leash;. classes are held in unfamiliar conditions for the trainer;. they teach the dog does not take food due to absence and near the trainer. The habit is considered developed if the dog does not take food both found on the ground and food offered by an unauthorized person.
Possible trainer mistakes:. conducting exercises in the same territory;. using the same food, as a result of which the dog does not get used to only a certain type of food;. allowing the dog to eat food found or offered by the helper, as a result of which a trouble-free habit of refusals is not produced from food;. improper use of unconditioned stimuli and especially electric current;. development of the initial conditioned reflex in a hungry dog.
How to wean a dog from taking food from strangers
One of the common bad habits of a dog is the habit of picking up the offered food from the hands of strangers. At first glance, this seems completely harmless. However, this habit can have negative consequences when the animal eats something dangerous. And if someone, offering a tidbit, deliberately wants to poison the dog? That is why the use of any opportunity to feed can result in not only food poisoning, but also death.
To protect the life and health of your pet, this habit must be actively eradicated.
Fighting a bad habit
This behavior is quite amenable to correction, but the owner will have to be persistent and sometimes apply harsh methods.
Cynologists recommend raising a puppy in this direction from the age of six months, since earlier education can lead to increased fearfulness of the animal.
And, of course, parenting begins at home. The dog must clearly understand that it can only eat from its own bowl or from the master’s hands. What does that require:
- strict diet. In no case should you offer your pet pieces of food just like that, between meals;
- working out the command “Eat” or “You can.” The animal must learn to eat only with the permission of the owner (family members), at his (their) command;
- accustoming only to the master’s hands and commands. No guests, even close relatives, have the right to offer food to the dog or give commands like “Come to me!”. only those who live with her.
Another technique is considered effective from teaching an animal from eating food from the wrong hands. a reception with the involvement of an assistant. The helper offers the dog a treat. As soon as she tries to grab a piece, she gets on the nose from the assistant. In this case, helpers should be changed each time, otherwise the dog can remember a specific person and henceforth identify him.
It is desirable that relatives and friends, with whom the animal often communicates, also acted as assistants. The dog should be accustomed to the fact that in the prohibition of taking food from someone else’s hands, there are no exceptions for it, except for the owner and his family.
The regularity of classes is at least twice a week. This technique requires a lot of attention and even professionalism from the owner, because you can develop excessive aggression in the dog, or, conversely, make it overly fearful. It is better to consult with professional trainers or take your pet to special classes.
But even if the animal refuses to eat from the wrong hands, control should not be weakened, because the temptation to feast on is too great and sometimes even the most trained can not resist.
Dummy Situation Method
To eliminate the risk of poisoning or injury, you can use the “dummy” method when teaching. The assistant lays out the bait in the form of food pieces. The owner, leading the pet on a leash, slowly approaches the bait, and when the dog rushes to the food, give the command “Fu” or “Do not” and jerk the leash sharply. The situation is repeated 4-5 times.
As a negative stimulus, you can use a light slap on the back of the dog’s rump or nose, hold (press on the back or withers with your hand). Negative stimulus should alternate with positive. After the dog has moved away from the bait, it is encouraged with a treat, praised or stroked. Gradually, food rewards should be completely replaced by tactile or vocal rewards. Do not abuse the “Fu” command and prohibit all potentially dangerous actions.
With the help of a “dummy” situation, you can also wean the dog from taking food from someone else’s hands. You need to ask several assistants to offer a treat to the dog, and when she reaches out to him, squeeze his hand, hiding the “bait”. The pet must firmly learn that he will not receive treats from a “stranger”. Ignoring “handouts” should be encouraged by the owner. Thus, the owner does not cancel the eating behavior (it dominates in animals, especially young ones), but only reorients, otherwise, by prohibiting eating a treat, one can provoke a search for “goodies” on the street or in a garbage can.
How to wean a dog from floor or ground picking: effective methods
In dogs, sniffing, searching and chasing are genetically determined reflexes. Very often, the detected “interesting” smell prompts to taste the object. This instinct, useful in the wild, is very dangerous in the city. Often after such a “meal” the dog suffers from poisoning and may even die. Why do dogs like to sniff and grab smelly objects so much, and how to wean a dog from picking up from the floor / ground?
Why does the dog sniff and pick up objects
Before you begin to wean a dog from a harmful and dangerous habit, you need to understand why a clean, domestic dog with great pleasure runs into the trash, sniffs, or even eats carrion. It is difficult to disaccustom a dog to “vacuum” the territory, since the sense of smell for a predator is one of the main senses. The cortical center responsible for the analysis of odors is 40 times larger in a dog than in a person, while the animal’s brain itself is 10 times smaller.
With the help of smell, the dog receives information about the territory, the sexual readiness of partners, the quality of food, the hierarchy in the pack. Smells give the dog not only the necessary information about the world, but also stimulate the positive emotions necessary for socialization and vital activity, and excite behavioral processes. Therefore, forbidding a dog to sniff, or rather to sniff out (a very special function), is dangerous for its health and psyche.
The book Kingdom of Smells by Anne Lill Kwam, a famous Norwegian trainer, describes not only the physiology of a dog’s sense of smell, but also its importance for the mental development and mental health of a dog. Exciting and attractive odors stimulate positive physiological processes in the dog’s body and in a certain way affect the behavioral reactions, the emotional state of the animal.
Taste in dogs is also closely related to the sense of smell. That is why it is so difficult for them to separate these “chemical” sensations. A newborn puppy primarily focuses on smell and taste. The survival of the baby depends on them. the search for food, protection, and comfortable conditions. This means that training should be aimed not at the prohibition of sniffing and testing, but at weaning to pick up an object from the floor or the ground.
Electro shock collar
In especially difficult cases, an electroshock collar is used. Such a collar is equipped with a control panel, which makes it possible to dose exposure and correct behavior at a considerable distance. The main thing is not to overdo it with pain. Your dog should be uncomfortable, not injured.
By discreetly operating the remote control, the owner avoids the formation of a logical connection between the negative impact and his person, which will preserve a trusting relationship with the pet. The disadvantage of this method of exposure is the inexperience of the owner. To use the collar, you need to practice with an experienced instructor.
You can distract your pet from the “illegal” action with a sharp sound. clap, ringing of a bunch of keys, whistle. Throwing a plastic bottle filled with small stones, coins or other “rattling” objects also works. The main thing is not to harm the dog and not scare him too much.
Another parenting method is to wear an apparel throughout the walk. A dog occupied with an attractive object will be less tempted to pick something less seductive from the ground.
Reasons for the manifestation of a bad habit
In addition to instincts, the transformation of a dog into a “vacuum cleaner” is explained by the following factors:
- a hungry past that plagues street and abandoned animals;
- lack of nutrients in the diet, vitamin deficiency;
- stress to overcome, which the dog needs positive emotions;
- lack of new sensations;
- parasitic diseases;
- aberration (distortion) of taste during pregnancy;
- violation of the intestinal microflora, since decomposing food contains digestive enzymes and bacteria that facilitate digestion;
- the need for bowel cleansing. The habit of picking up inedible garbage is inherited by domestic dogs from wolves, which eat feathers, grass, hairballs and pebbles to induce vomiting and cleanse the intestines;
- the desire to play with the found item.
As you can see, there are many reasons prompting a dog to pick up edible and inedible items and food leftovers on the street. Most of these can be eliminated by adjusting the dog’s diet or behavior. An attentive owner can easily determine the reasons for the manifestation of “gathering” and try to eliminate them.
Possible ways to wean a dog from picking up all kinds of nasty things on the street:
- Weak discharge of current when trying to pick up from the ground. The blow comes from below, directly from the feed itself. The method is used when teaching on training grounds or under the supervision of an experienced specialist.
- Electro shock collar. another tough but quickly understood option.
- Braking command coupled with mechanical action on the dog.
- A treat with a bitter filling. Care should be taken when using such a treat, make sure that the pet is not allergic to these foods.
- Perfect execution of the command “To me”.
Team “To me”
Ideally, upon hearing her, the dog drops everything and runs to the owner, completely switching over to him. Clear obedience to this command is the basis for a long and happy life of a four-legged.
The training is carried out in several ways. The first is mechanical. faster, but unpleasant for the dog. The second is with the help of a treat or toy.
When choosing a mechanical method, you need a long leash and a favorite treat. The dog walks on a long (from five meters) leash, clamped in the palm of the owner. When the animal gets carried away with its business, the owner begins twitching, while running away, moving backwards. The darling begins to catch up with him. The handler gives the command “To me”, continuing to move. The dog overtakes the owner, after which he stops, praises the pet and puts a hand with a treat behind his head so that the animal has to sit down. The dog sits down opposite the owner and receives a treat.
Another method is divided into several stages. Training begins at puppyhood, when the pet reaches two months of age.
- First, the owner teaches the pet to move for a treat. The latter is clamped in the handler’s left hand, the fist is pressed to the side, thigh or leg. depending on the size of the puppy. The owner walks with his back forward, and the baby is concentratedly trying to get the treat from the palm of his hand, following him.
- When the pet learns this movement without distraction, the application of the voice command begins. The basic process is the same, the pet follows the owner, but he utters the command “Come to me”, then sits the dog in front of him with the help of a treat and reinforces the training with encouragement.
- After mastering this lesson, the third stage follows. The owner places the dog near his left leg, then takes two or three steps with his back forward in the opposite direction from the animal. He carefully monitors his condition, if the dog decides to follow the guide without a command, he will have to return to the main position. Otherwise, the owner calls the pet with a team, encourages it with a delicacy and verbally.
Braking command and mechanical action
The method of weaning picking up litter and food is simple, effective, and applicable to all breeds. A familiar territory is chosen as a training ground, where the treats are scattered in advance. A regular collar is put on the dog, for large breeds a ring chain, fixed in the correct way, is suitable (it is advisable to avoid “planing”). The guide and the pet move slowly over the terrain, the four-legged student notices the “sweets” and begins to lower his head, hoping to grab them. At this time, the owner gives one of the braking commands. “Fu!”, “No!”, “You can’t!”. After a second, a jerk with a leash follows so that the pet feels a mechanical effect. Strength is calculated based on the size of the dog.
The animal is distracted from the find, switching to the owner. He encourages him verbally (“Yes!”, “Super!” Or “Good!”), Gives a treat or a toy. depending on what the dog is oriented towards.
What training methods are better not to resort to??
- Throw objects in his direction, hoping to distract attention from the treat. The kid can be very scared, as a result of this, mental problems will begin.
- Shout, whistle, clap your hands next to him. The method is suitable for correcting the behavior of an adult dog.
- Physical impact.
- Using ESHO.
- Leash too strong.
- Application of filled treats.
Why is this skill so important?
Poisoning is one of the main reasons why a four-legged friend should be able to bypass “sweets” on the street. Modern drugs allow dog hunters to destroy animals in the most sophisticated ways. It is enough for a pet to smell the agent causing a quick death, not to mention trying.
Diarrhea and vomiting resulting from a selected tidbit is another option for the development of poisoning. This also includes obstruction and constipation, the owner will have to pay for an expensive operation to save the pet from suffering.
The second point is the danger of injuring the gastrointestinal tract. Having picked up the bones, the animal runs the risk of being left with punctured internal organs.
People who want to harm the owner and the dog are increasingly common. Thieves who entered the house are able to treat the dog with something tasty, giving it from the hand or throwing it on the floor. The result will be disastrous; at best, the guard will fall asleep, at worst, he will die. That is why it is necessary to forbid your pet to take a treat from the hands of strangers.
How to wean a dog from taking food from strangers
It is unlikely that any dog can refuse a tasty, deliciously smelling piece. But the habit of eating everything found or offered by strangers can end very badly for your dog.
The task of every responsible owner is to teach his pet not to pick up food from the ground and not to take it from the hands of strangers.
Strangers treating your dog may quite sincerely want to do something nice for him. But not all of them know that dogs cannot do much of what we eat. Chocolates, citrus fruits, smoked meats. all of this is included in the list of foods prohibited for dogs. Food allergies are the most harmless consequence of such treats.
But not all people trying to treat your dog will have warm feelings for him. Unfortunately, some of those who dislike dogs are quite creative in their efforts to harm them. Therefore, be always vigilant. If you do not know the person who is handing your pet something tasty, thank and firmly refuse the treat.
If your dog managed to swallow what she was offered, carefully monitor her condition. Vomiting, diarrhea, fever, weakness, painful abdomen, rapid breathing, loss of consciousness. these can all be signs of poisoning. Always have the contacts of the veterinary clinic with you, which provides 24-hour veterinary care, and contact your veterinarian immediately. Even a little delay can cost a dog his life.
How to wean a dog from taking food from someone else’s hands?
It is necessary to train the dog to eat only from your hands or from your bowl from the very childhood. A small puppy must clearly learn that his food is only what the owner offers him. To do this, it is useful every time, before allowing the puppy to eat, put a bowl in front of him, maintain a short pause and only then release him to the bowl after the command “You can!” or “Eat!”.
In the future, if you do everything right, an adult dog will wait for your signal that it can start eating.
How to wean a puppy from taking food from strangers | Puppy socialization | Part five
Please note that this exercise will be effective only if, between meals, the puppy does not receive snacks from you just like that, and your household does not feed him from the table.
This skill will be useful in that the dog will understand the difference between the permitted food and all other food. A puppy, accustomed to eating on command, is easier to disaccustom not to pick up scraps on the street, because such food is not approved by the owner. But for those who were taught to “bite” and were allowed to pick up food thrown on the floor, it will be more difficult to understand why it can be done at home, but not on the street.
It is better to wean a puppy or dog from the habit of taking treats from strangers with the help of an outside helper who is not familiar to the dog.
Ask someone you know, neighbors, or bystanders to offer your dog food. At that moment, when the dog reaches for the treat, the helper should click the dog on the nose or lightly hit it in the face. A couple of such exercises are enough for the dog to turn its nose away when trying to treat it. Be sure to praise the dog and immediately offer a treat from your hand.
Puppies and teenage dogs with this exercise may even be timid and hide behind the owner. Dogs with a harder temperament may show aggression towards a stranger. The main thing here is not to overdo it. Excessively intense exposure (frequent or strong blows) can lead the dog to either fear of strangers or unnecessary aggression. The latter is especially dangerous if you are the owner of a large and rather vicious dog breed. Do not overdo it with the encouragement of anger towards strangers in her, so that in the future you do not have to curb the dog from throwing every time someone reaches out to her side.
If the dog has turned away from the palm of the yummy, this is very good. But that’s not all. You need to work on the skill regularly.
Change the route of the walk, the type of treat (today cookies, tomorrow. cheese, the day after tomorrow. boiled meat) and be sure to change assistants. The dog will clearly identify the same person and react in the right way only to him. Do not hesitate to ask your friends. they are friends for you, and for the dog they are the same outsiders as everyone else. It would be a big mistake to allow the dog to take food from someone else selectively, because it does not understand the criteria for this choice. And if it is possible for one person, then it is possible for everyone. Be consistent.
Reinforcing the skill will require persistence and patience from you. But this is the only way you can protect your dog from accidental or deliberate poisoning. Your pet’s health and life is well worth the effort.
