Why the kitten eats poorly and is thin
Little cats, due to inexperience, most often experience stress due to a new family or owners. This stress mainly manifests itself in the first days after the move. A kitten may not eat at all and hide from new owners, but this whole thing is a matter of habit and is solved literally in the shortest possible time.
But if the kitten has no reasons for stress, and he still eats poorly and continues to lose weight, then there is a high probability that the pet is sick and urgently needs to be taken to the veterinarian. Since the kitten does not have such strong immunity as in adult cats.
If the cat has lost a lot of weight, but he eats well, then this is the first sign of infection with worms. The invasion is accompanied by nausea, perverted appetite, bloody clots in the stool.
Parasites can cause loss of appetite in animals
Parasites are not always visible in feces, and therefore the owner may not be aware of the pet’s illness. Therefore, a person can see that the cat is losing weight, but eats well, that this may not be clear to him. In this case, you need to donate feces for analysis, which will reveal the eggs of the worm.
Parasites can affect not only the intestines, but all internal organs. In severe cases, they are fatal. To get rid of worms, special tablets are used, which are given to the animal according to the scheme.
Neoplasms. Unfortunately, the feline body can also suffer from neoplastic diseases. At the beginning of the development of a dangerous disease, the animal can eat normally, but be lethargic. He may have changes in stool, urine. See your veterinarian as soon as possible!
A week before estrus, the cat loses its appetite, which returns with the onset of ovulation or after it stops. At times, the animal consumes mainly treats in small portions. If the cat feels good, drinks water, sleeps and calls the cat, there is nothing to worry about.
Change of scenery
In addition to changing food, a cat may refuse to eat, protesting against changing feeding places, changing dishes. If an ornamental plant is placed next to the feeder, wash the bowls with new detergent.
In the wild, cats don’t eat every day. It depends on the hunting luck, therefore the instinct of gluttony in domesticated predators is ineradicable. Overeating is painful, and fasting is the best way to end digestive problems.
In summer, in heat, and in winter, with maximum heating, cats lose their appetite, because the thermoregulation mechanism is activated, which protects against overheating.
The owner must provide the pet with good and proper nutrition, carefully monitoring the regime and diet, and the availability of clean drinking water. A starving cat loses its beauty, becomes embittered and sick. Cheap food or food from the table leads to problems with the pet’s teeth and the entire digestive system.
How to Look After a Dying Cat. Palliative care.
A pet walking on its own should be checked for ticks in the spring-autumn period, since they not only cause pain, but also carry various diseases of a viral nature.
If any change of scenery is planned (the appearance of children, new pets, moving), the owner should be close to the animal more often. Everything new should be introduced gradually, giving the pet space and time to adapt.
A pet’s appetite is a sign of excellent health. If the animal feels good, it does not refuse to eat. When a cat eats poorly and loses weight, the owner starts sounding the alarm. There may be several reasons for refusal, among them natural factors are distinguished. environmental temperature, emotional states of the animal, pregnancy or the postpartum period, as well as pathologies. diseases of internal organs, stress, trauma.
It is quite problematic for the owner to independently identify the reason for refusing food and losing weight, therefore it is recommended to contact the veterinary clinic as soon as possible for further examinations and consultations.
The owner of the cat should be especially wary in the absence of not only appetite, but also when the animal refuses to play, changes in appearance (the wool falls off, becomes unkempt), digestive disorders (diarrhea and vomiting) occur, and the overall temperature of the body rises. It is necessary to sound the alarm if the animal refuses water, as this condition threatens dehydration and even death.
Treatment for malnutrition in a cat should be directed at the underlying cause of the condition.
Depending on the diagnosis, malnourished animals may be advised to:
- Antibiotic therapy, treatments for worms, antibacterial drugs. for inflammatory or parasitic bowel diseases.
- High-calorie quality diet.
- Sometimes force feeding or tube feeding.
- Parenteral (intravenous) nutrition. for cats unable to eat due to vomiting or regurgitation, illness.
- Surgical treatment. removal of large tumors or foreign bodies from the intestines.
Due to the fact that there are a lot of reasons for refusing to eat, only a qualified specialist can accurately diagnose on the basis of laboratory and clinical studies. The animal undergoes a thorough clinical examination, including auscultation and palpation, as well as thermometry. Further, the doctor prescribes:
- general blood analysis;
- blood chemistry;
- chest and abdominal x-rays.
After the established reason why the cat began to lose weight and lost interest in food, the veterinarian develops a treatment regimen depending on the age, weight and breed of the cat.
First of all, it is necessary to eliminate the cause that caused the changes in the body. If the cause is the accumulation of hairballs in the stomach, special pastes are prescribed that contain substances that facilitate the passage of the hairballs through the digestive tract.
Sex-related food withdrawal is not treatable. It is possible to prevent manifestations of this kind by sterilizing an animal that has no breeding value. In addition, the timely sterilization of the cat allows you to protect the pet from the development of other serious diseases arising against the background of hormonal disruptions (cancer of the ovaries, uterus, or pyometra).
Treatment of infectious or bacterial ailments that provoke loss of appetite and severe thinness should proceed from the neglect of the pathological process. Infections caused by bacterial foreign microorganisms are treated with antibiotics, selected according to the sensitivity of the bacteria.
It is also important to strengthen the general immune forces of the body. To maintain the health of the cat at the proper level, it is necessary to provide quality food and vitamin supplements.
In order to prevent diseases such as rabies, plague of carnivores, infectious peritonitis, it is important to carry out immunization according to the vaccination schedule. In case of manifestations of symptoms of an animal’s unhealthy (lethargy, aggression, refusal to eat), it is necessary to contact the veterinarian as soon as possible to make an accurate diagnosis
All diseases require specific treatment and a special diet prescribed by a doctor.
In some cases, such as allergic rhinitis, it is possible to stimulate the animal’s appetite. For this, mackerel is used, its aroma increases the cat’s desire to eat.
The main treatment is prescribed by the veterinarian according to the results of the diagnostics and the tests passed, since it is specific for each disease. The chosen therapy is aimed at eliminating not only the symptoms, but also the cause that caused the malaise and, as a result, refusal to eat, followed by weight loss.

How to calculate the number of calories you need
AED is the resting energy requirement (calories) a cat needs at rest for a good metabolism, calculated by the formula.
- Cat weight 5 kg. 30 x 5 70 = 220. this is the cat’s PEP
- Kitten weight 1kg. 30 x 1 kg 70 = 100. this is the kitten’s PEP
- Cat with 3.5 kg wasting. 30 x 3.5 70 = 175. this is the cat’s PEP
- A cat with an overweight of 6.5 kg. 30 x 6, 5 70 = 265. this is the PEP of the cat
EPE. Your cat’s daily energy requirements are based on age and condition, summarized in a table.
The article contains the main problems that can appear in cats, cats and kittens. The material contains information of a general nature, intended for familiarization, which makes it possible to better understand this issue.
What is the optimal weight for an adult cat?
Depending on the breed, the weight of the pet varies from 3 to 7 kg. Mature animals are usually fit and thin, especially if it is a male who is losing weight and gaining weight all the time. The lifestyle of a healthy cat is active and dynamic. After “games” the pet wants to drink a lot, the animal eats abundantly, which has a positive effect on the digestive processes.
Dangerous symptoms of weight loss include:
- Lethargy, apathy. Mood swings are evidence of anxiety. The cat is bad and she cannot find a place for herself, does not play and refuses food.
- Blood, frequent diarrhea. If the cat has lost weight and at the same time there are extraneous inclusion in the urine and diarrhea, you need to go to the clinic and do tests.
- Bloating. Do not confuse heavy weight and a bloated belly. The cat may get worse and worse due to internal swelling, infection, infection, due to which he does not eat.
When you shouldn’t panic?
The activity of the animal is the best evidence of the state of health. A cat that constantly plays, runs, sleeps little and constantly asks for food is not subject to risks and periodically loses weight. The morning volume of food is burned in a matter of hours and therefore the pet will ask for more in the afternoon. But you shouldn’t overfeed your cat.
Old cats are already getting cold to play, losing weight and it’s not a matter of illness. With age, the cat moves less and less and studies, more often observes and evaluates. The fewer movements, the less energy is burned, and accordingly, a minimum of food will be needed.
Mild poisoning for cats is a common situation, especially if the pet eats the same food as the owner. Diarrhea for two to three days does not mean a serious illness. If the problem has dragged on for more than a week, it is wise to see a specialist.
Animals experience stressful situations more difficult than humans, but faster. The introduction of a kitten, puppy, baby, a scary cat plush toy or a new person in the house can completely destroy the appetite and lead to the animal losing weight. Do not panic: after a couple of days, the cat will return to its usual eating schedule.
Why does a cat lose weight, but eats well?
When the animal feeds steadily, but does not gain weight, the pet owners sound the alarm. Many people believe that if a cat eats, then weight gain is a natural process. This is not entirely true. Animals, like humans, are active and dynamic, which burns extra calories and contributes to the fact that the pet loses weight. When a cat is losing weight, but eating well, this is normal. With active life, weight loss is ensured by a normal metabolism. The situation is different with sedentary cats.
Do not expect an active fat gain from a kitten. In kittens the first 9-11 months, a skeleton, posture is formed, the baby gets fat and thinner. Young cats and cats become soft and plump 1-2 years after birth.
How to feed your cat properly?
If the cat has lost a lot of weight, the owner may have made the wrong daily diet and menu for the pet. There are a number of rules thanks to which you can maintain a stable weight of the animal and protect the family pet from threats:
It is important to choose only one food option, otherwise the cat will not only lose weight, but may also get sick. This is a branded industrial feed or natural food. You can find branded feeds by labeling holistic, premium and supreme. These are classes that confirm compliance with high production standards.
Natural food and industrial feed must not be mixed. The cat develops one type of digestion, aimed at “artificial” or natural food. Your cat needs more moisture to digest the biscuits. With a constant change in diet, the digestive system cannot adapt in a timely manner, which causes the stomach and intestines to suffer.
How to feed your cat with natural food?
The menu consists of two types of dishes. These are meat and dairy products.
The fermented milk set consists of low-fat cottage cheese and 1% kefir. On average, cottage cheese is served “on the table” to the cat 1-2 times a week.
Why is weight loss
If a cat eats a lot, but loses weight, there are a number of reasons:
- Worms. Helminths or worms destroy the animal’s body from the inside. Even if the cat eats a lot, the pet loses weight. Helminths get inside the animal from dirty shoes, unwashed hands, and a dirty litter box. Cleanliness and hygiene will protect the cat. To combat worms, special products are sold, taken on average for about six months.
- The defeat of the internal organs. The answer to the question why the cat is losing weight will help the analysis in the vet clinic. Disturbances in the digestive system are also noticeable externally. This is an impurity in urine and stool consistency, an unusual color. During the period of illness, the pet’s appetite decreases, he eats little.
- Stress. Having a new pet can be a problem. The cat’s health is under serious stress due to nervous experience. Therefore, the once fat cat may begin to lose weight in a couple of months. Any change for a pet is a long-term addictive.
- Summer heat. If the cat loses weight in the summer with a good appetite, this is normal. In the summer season, the fluffy animal sheds its fur, and due to temperature loads, it eats less than in frosty winters.
- Age. The old cat eats less than the young one. This is due to low mobility. An older cat who is losing weight should still be checked with a veterinarian, but for animals that sleep most of the time, weight loss is common.
- Tumors. Neoplasms on the body, and even more so in the body, are not easy to detect. With benign tumors, the cat should not lose weight.
- Feed. The quality of food determines the weight of the animal, how quickly it loses weight, how much it eats, and affects the processes in the body. Do not drastically change the cat’s diet from dry to liquid or homemade food. Even a dog that is less picky about food will not begin to recover from this. Changing the menu for a pet is a consistent and long process, in which it loses weight anyway.
Why does a cat need weed?
An indispensable ingredient in the diet of a cat that is losing weight is green grass. It is a natural food that has a positive effect on the functioning of the digestive system. The herb contains zinc, manganese, pantothenic acid and vitamins of various groups, which are necessary to rid the body of parasites and strengthen immunity.
Constant monitoring of the weight, the fact that the cat is losing weight or gaining weight is the right decision. This is an indicator of the development of the body, the appearance of symptoms of diseases and other problems. A well-designed diet will help protect an adult cat and keep a kitten safe.
Feeding a cat if it is losing weight is deliberately dangerous. A fat and fluffy animal looks cute and even adorable, but for the animal it is an extra load, decreased activity and the risk of various diseases that proceed in a passive form and may be invisible at the initial stage.
Disease is the most likely cause of thinness in cats
Weight loss and increased appetite accompany such serious illnesses as diabetes mellitus, thyroid problems, and metabolic disorders. Often the cat eats a lot, but remains thin due to infection with parasites. Weight loss with an unchanged appetite can be accompanied by chronic heart failure, gastrointestinal diseases, rabies, feline plague, renal ailments, hormonal disorders, accompanying, for example, frequent estrus.
Age affects weight
Aging cats often lose weight, although they do not lose their appetite. The fact that among the tailed “old-timers” there are few of those who are overweight is a scientifically proven fact. Obesity affects mainly pets, which are from 5 to 10 years old. The peculiarities of feline metabolism are such that at a later age, their body does not accumulate excess. Of course, in this case, weight loss may be accompanied by illness and loss of appetite, old people often have toothache and gums.
Children take everything
“Why is the cat thin, although it eats well?”. this question is often asked by the owners of cats. In fact, a lactating cat often loses weight, especially if she has many kittens. In this case, the mustachioed mother physically cannot absorb as much food as she gives to her children. She will definitely regain her seductive roundness after she stops feeding the kittens.
Stress is the cause of thinness
If the cat is very thin, but eats as usual, it may be under stress. Remember, we ourselves often seize our problems too, but constant stress, discomfort, depression lead to the fact that we lose weight, despite the chocolates and cakes being devoured. If your pet has gone through a move, a change of owners, the appearance of new people or animals in the house. this may be the reason why the cat eats well, but is very thin.
Why is a cat thin, but eats well?
The fashion for harmony has not reached our pets. At all times, a special affection for cat lovers is caused by smooth and well-fed mustachioed ones. There is even a proverb related to this: “Why the cat is smooth: ate. and on its side.” But it so happens that the cat eats well, but very thin. Why doesn’t the animal gain weight despite being well fed? Let’s name the main reasons.
Love affects the figure
However, the reason for the cat’s thinness may not be so sad, and partly even “romantic”. In the spring, during the period of active “festivities”, pets, especially those on a free range, often very much lose weight. At the same time, of course, they do not lose their appetite “from love” and quickly restore their shape, satisfying their instinct.
Genes help to keep the figure
After all, if a cat eats a lot, but is thin, it is very likely that this is a feature of its “constitution”. The standard of many breeds provides for feline harmony. these are Siamese, Bengals, Abyssinians, Russian blues and many others. If your pet is one of these. read the description of the breed. It is quite possible that in your case, “a skinny cat that eats well” is the norm. Slender, but with a good appetite are also “nobles”, especially if they are not castrated or sterilized. Great mobility and a good metabolism help many mustachioed people stay in shape, without limiting themselves to snacks.
We hope that your cat is just like that. with a healthy slimness and good appetite.!
And ours just began to gain weight after 10 years, when he began to move less and sleep more.
It means that he has some health problems, the metabolism is disturbed.
Actually, a cat should be thin. The ribs should be felt, if not. this is already obesity. Or do you want your pet to get stuck in all sorts of crevices, relying on the instinct “if the head gets through. everything else will pass”?
Not thin, but slim. Fat loss and weight loss are different things, when a cat loses a lot of weight from diseases, it also loses muscle, becomes thin from loss of muscle tissue.
Okay, they wrote why cats are losing weight, and why didn’t they write that feeding is harmful? What is the threat of obesity? And then, based on the article, you might think that a fat cat is good.
And a thin cat, how much is it in weight? Classic Exot 5 kg is considered thin?
There must be a balance between the weight and size of the cat. It is impossible to focus only on its weight. For example, for an exotic, 5 kg is the norm, for singapore. overweight, and for a kun. thinness.
Please do not argue or swear! If the Cat (Cat) is purebred, then the SHOWS have a standard of weight (whether you like it or not). Otherwise, they may be disqualified. And all the rest. at the discretion of the owners! If you DO NOT WANT any health problems for your pet, DON’T FEED IT, of course! They get sick just like us from being overweight.
And here in Tashkent the heat is over forty degrees, so no matter how much the Fly eats, it does not get fat. And it also depends on temperament. Well, a very agile cat.
Our cat began to burst with terrible force, when the worms started up, and we did not even suspect for some time until they themselves were escaped in the cat’s tray. We ran to the veterinary pharmacy, they advised us helmimax as a new remedy that even helps against a heartworm, they gave the cat a pill, we didn’t even have to shove it, which is surprising, and the worms passed quickly, on the third day there was definitely no one.
I have an ordinary cat, she eats well, she is almost 9 months old, and she is VERY thin. Because of which?
Hello! Your cat is very young, so her thinness is really alarming. Perhaps there are hereditary reasons, maybe these are parasites, and perhaps the food you feed her is not suitable.
If the cat has any health abnormalities (vomiting, diarrhea, dull hair, dandruff, pale mucous eyes and mouth), then we can only help with advice. you need to contact your veterinarian and conduct an examination. There may be hidden symptoms, so a visit to the doctor in any case will not be superfluous. You also need to deal with parasites (worms).
If there are no other problems besides thinness, then we advise you to choose food for her with a high m of meat and daily give her 100 g of raw chicken or beef. And of course you need to control your weight.
Hello! I have the same problem. a VERY, very thin cat, although he eats more than the norm, but still walks constantly hungry. If you do not stop eating, then he overeats, but immediately belches everything back. He also drinks a lot. There are no worms. True, the age is 18 years old. But quite mobile, teeth in excellent condition, castrated at the age of 2 years. Another misfortune now is that the wool is constantly falling off, so that you have to cut it, it does not lend itself to combing. The coat is soft and long. It would be necessary, of course, to show it to the veterinarian, but once again I don’t want to arrange stress, after all the old man is already. I became thin only during the last year. Can’t tell you what to do?
Thank you in advance.
hello, how is your cat? we had the same problem. turned out to be a problem with the thyroid gland. now on pills, everything has changed.
Svetlana, I can repeat your letter almost word for word, only my 12 years old and three years in the middle of his life he was a loss and I do not know where he lived. Unfortunately, I do not see an answer to your letter. If you can, please share if you solved the problem?
Hello! It’s good if the cat has a great appetite. In older pets, protein metabolism is often disrupted. When this happens, the protein that enters the body through the feed is unable to be absorbed normally and is lost in urine and faeces. Hence the decrease in muscle mass. As a result, many cats and cats become very thin in old age. This is dangerous, including from the point of view of the development of renal failure, therefore it is recommended to take a blood test once a year at least for key biochemical parameters in order to check how the kidneys and liver work. In older cats, there may also be a decrease in the absorption of vitamins and minerals. this leads, among other things, to dumping or dryness, brittle coat. In such a situation, the cat may benefit from a special vitamin and mineral complex, but it should still be prescribed by a veterinarian. The decision on how often to show the pet to the doctor and whether to do tests, of course, is always made by the owner. If there is a concern that the clinic visit will cause excessive stress, it may be better to call the doctor at home. We advise you to do this on the recommendation of friends who know the specialist well and are satisfied with his services.
They picked up a cat, eats well, but does not really recover. Behind the shugan, he constantly hides and meows, but at the same time, if you stroke him, he purrs. Or when he comes, he too, barks and purrs at the same time. From worms watered, outwardly looks healthy.
we have an ordinary kitty, she eats normally. not much, but a little thin)) but this is more likely due to the fact that she is very active, she sleeps a little, but she runs most of the day??
My Barsya eats more than me, probably, does not recover at all (for 1.5 months, 6 blocks of kitiket dwindled (liquid)
I have such a problem, recently we noticed that the cat began to lose a lot of weight, although she eats a lot. They took her to the vet and he prescribed broth and rice water for her. We also give the cat Prazicide Suspension Plus. What do you think will help? I am very worried about the cat.
Good afternoon, thanks for the question! Our opinion is that it is necessary to first identify the cause that caused the thinness in the cat, and then prescribe treatment, adjust the diet and take other measures. As we understood from your appeal, no additional studies (blood, urine, feces) were performed on the cat and the diagnosis was not made. How did the doctor explain the purpose of the broth and rice water? What did the cat eat before? Prazicid Suspension Plus is a drug that is used once a season or before vaccination, so it should not be given to the cat constantly.
Everything was fine with the cat, but after a while she began to lose weight! It looks like you can’t tell, but if you feel it, you can feel well the spine, ribs, pelvis. She sleeps (lies) a lot, and when our second cat tries to start playing with the “sick” cat, she hisses at her and goes on to lie down. Tell me what it can be and is it worth taking it to the veterinarian?
Hello! Judging by what you wrote, the cat is unhealthy. Weakness and lack of interest in games, if she previously liked them, as well as severe weight loss, can indicate very different problems. As we understand, the cat has been in this state for quite some time, so we advise you to immediately show it to a doctor you trust. You need to find out what is wrong with the animal, and then try to take the necessary measures to help him.
Hello!! We have a Havana cat. He is only 2 years old. He is blind and does not smell. Eats a lot, but weighs only 2.5. When you stroke, you feel that this is one skeleton. In addition, she often goes to the toilet.
Hello! Havana cats are quite slender, but breed thinness and the state of the skeleton are not the same thing at all. Judging by what you wrote about the cat’s condition, it is better to show it to the doctor. Perhaps a specialist will help solve the issue with weight and frequent bowel movements.
Good day. My cat has lost 2kg in half a year, not dramatically, gradually. Those. it was not immediately noticeable. He is 5 years old, eats well, goes to the toilet, behaves as usual. Should I sound the alarm?
Hello! If your cat has really become too thin (when stroking the back, the spine and ribs are easily felt, the pelvic bones stick out, etc.), then we recommend that you show it to a competent doctor and pass at least a complete biochemical blood test. Cats can compensate for diseases for a very long time, practically without showing them outwardly. We believe that in the situation that you described, it is better to play it safe than to overlook.
Hello! I have two cats. One of them is 3 years old, and the second is 1.5, both are black noblewomen. Not sterilized. They have spree quite often and almost at the same time (we do not give them any injection pills). The youngest was brought from a business trip by her daughter and for almost a month our beauties communicated through a crack under a closed door, because in the first days they had a fight on the move. Now the eldest decided that the little one was her kitten, and the relationship became kindred. But from time to time they are jealous of people for each other and take offense) The problem is that the older cat, in my opinion, is too thin. 2.5 kg. and eats mostly dry food. He drinks a lot, loves warm milk, sometimes a little bit can eat some patented food and freshly cooked baked chicken or pink salmon. The coat is beautiful, the cat is active and playful. I give vitamins to both. The little one ate everything at first, and now she has also become very picky, but well-fed (3.5 kg) and eats decent portions. I am wondering if such a weight can be the norm and are there genetically thin cats? And should all cats gain weight by winter? Until the little one appeared, it seemed to me that the older one had a normal weight, and now I compare it with the little one and I am frightened (
Maya, good afternoon! Of course, cats, like humans, have a different body constitution. a more elongated or more compact body, as well as limbs of different lengths, different weights. Some pets get fat by winter, and some do not, but the weight of 2.5 kg for an adult three-year-old cat is still very little. As a rule, in such a situation, a cat can easily find the spine, ribs and pelvic bones by running your hand along the back. If you can easily feel the skeleton, but do not feel the presence of muscle tissue, then the cat is really thin. It is possible that this is due to her active hormonal background, since she is not sterilized. Pets are recommended to be sterilized, including because this operation is the prevention of future problems with the reproductive system, which still does not fulfill its functions (does not bring offspring, as nature should). Of course, this should only be done by trusted specialists, it is advisable to choose both a clinic and a specific doctor on the recommendation of friends. It happens that thinness is associated with problems in the functioning of the kidneys, and with improper absorption of nutrients. You can take a biochemical blood test of a cat in a reliable laboratory in order to understand how things are with the work of its body. Pink salmon and milk are undesirable foods in a cat’s diet, we would not recommend feeding them to your pets.
Treat the animal based on the diagnosis. To begin with, in order to restore normal body weight and support the body, they are prescribed:
- infusion therapy. Its essence boils down to the artificial introduction into the body of an animal medicinal solution or biological fluid. blood, plasma. The route of administration is intravenous or subcutaneous. Treatment allows you to replenish the loss of plasma or blood, the lack of certain elements, restore the balance of electrolytes and maintain the acid-base balance. This type of therapy is prescribed to animals with impaired kidney function, blood poisoning, and all the signs of severe shock. During treatment, the weight of the cat is regularly measured;
- intravenous nutrition. Nutrients are administered intravenously if the animal cannot consume food on its own. The mixtures used fully replace natural food, not allowing the cat’s body to weaken. Food is also given through a nasogastric tube.
Simultaneously with supportive therapy, measures are taken to eliminate the problem. So, if the reason lies in an upset stomach, then the cat is given drugs that help eliminate inflammation of the mucous membranes, relieve pain. If the reason for the thinness is that there is a foreign object in the animal’s oral cavity, an operation is performed. If the cause of exhaustion is worms, then the specialist prescribes a course of drugs that allow them to be removed from the body as accurately as possible.
Important! You should not try to cure a cat on your own, since even a specialist with modern equipment at his disposal is not always able to make an accurate diagnosis. If the cat’s body is heavily infected with worms, then the use of the drug from parasites can cause her death. To prevent this from happening, the animal is placed in a hospital and medications are given to it exclusively in dosage.
Signs of exhaustion
When wondering why a cat is thin, and whether it is normal, factors such as normal and painful thinness are considered. In the first case, we are talking about the weight rate, which should correspond to an animal of a particular breed at a certain age. The second is about exhaustion. A cat that is too thin is most likely sick and needs long-term rehabilitation therapy, which can only be prescribed by a specialist.
Appearance norm for British breeds
What to do if the cat has become thin
If the owner changed several types of food and gave the animal a drug for worms, and the kitten is thin and continues to lose weight, contact the veterinarian. He will carry out the appropriate diagnostics (the blood and feces of the animal are taken for analysis, the cat is prescribed an ultrasound scan, its organs are x-rayed, a laparotomy is done) and will advise how exactly the pet should be treated.
Why a castrated cat doesn’t get fat
Among the owners of not yet neutered cats, there is an opinion that as soon as neutering happens, absolutely everything will change in the character, lifestyle and behavior of the animal. Cats become calm and even lazy, stop tagging, and begin to gain weight quickly. In relation to, probably, 70-80% of castrated animals, this opinion is justified, since it is based on the knowledge that after the procedure the hormonal background changes, the metabolic processes of the cat slow down, which means that it becomes less energetic. But this is not always the case.
Note! If the animal was castrated late, at 1.5-2 years old, then there is a high probability of the absence of any abrupt changes, so the appearance of a skinny cat should not be alarming.
Correct feeding also affects the absence of changes in weight. So, if the cat consumed dry food before castration, then the change of food (transfer to natural products) is reflected in the weight (the cat gets fat). If the cat is fed according to the same scheme as before, then no changes occur.
There is also a lot to do with the breed. Cats of the British breed immediately after castration begin to consume more food, their body weight quickly increases by 2-3 times. The body weight of a castrated yard cat remains unchanged. The procedure can affect this parameter, but, like people, everything is individual, some pets cannot get fat only because of castration, therefore, if the owner dreamed that he would have a fat and very lazy cat, he may have to be disappointed.
Endogenous (internal) factors that provoke cachexia include diseases of a non-infectious and infectious nature. Cats lose weight as they develop:
- oncological diseases;
- cardiovascular pathologies;
- diabetes mellitus;
- chronic infections (infectious peritonitis, immunodeficiency, leukemia).
Cachexia is caused by hormonal disorders, problems with the pancreas, dysfunction of the kidneys and liver, and the pituitary gland.
- the occurrence of a stressful situation (if the cat is given into the wrong hands, often transported);
- Carrying offspring and feeding kittens (lactating cats often become excessively thin so that a thin cat does not completely exhaust and get sick, kittens are taken away as soon as they begin to feed on their own);
- vitamin deficiency (food must be balanced, it is useful for the cat to additionally give vitamins);
- the formation of lumps of wool in the stomach (from time to time, pets are given special pills for coughing it up);
- infection of the pet’s body with helminths (parasites secrete dangerous toxins, weaken the cat, their activity eventually leads to the appearance of physical pain, which develops apathy, loss of appetite).
An adult, non-neutered cat loses weight at the onset of sexual heat. In spring, cats literally forget about everything in the world, including food, they move a lot and eat poorly, so they lose weight. Females also lose weight for this reason, but it is in males that significant changes are observed.
Important! Older cats move less, sleep a lot and, accordingly, eat less, which affects their body weight.
Exogenous external causes of depletion include:
- lack of food (exhaustion is observed in feral cats and animals that receive food from time to time);
- dysfunction of swallowing (the cat has something stuck in the throat, the nasopharynx is inflamed due to an insect bite, under the influence of allergens);
- dental problems (inflammation in the oral cavity, caries, tartar. all this prevents the animal from eating its usual food).
An adult cat should receive at least 70 g of dry food per day. If the cat is feeding the offspring or is sick, the rate is doubled. At the same time, only fresh food should always be in the bowl, as many feed manufacturers warn about.
Lean cat: signs and main causes of exhaustion
The weight of a cat depends on age, sex, breed, and the availability of nutrients in the food. An adult yard cat weighs no more than 5 kg, but if the cat is Scottish, then its weight reaches 7 kg or more, a Maine Coon cat weighs up to 10 kg or more. If the cat is young, then its weight can change dramatically, increasing or decreasing depending on the lifestyle: the more active the animal, the faster it sheds the gained kilos. Older cats and cats accumulate fat at a slower rate, so cats over 9 years old look thin. Below we will discuss why the cat is thin, and is it really dangerous for his body.
Causes of exhaustion
Depletion, or cachexia, develops under the influence of exogenous (external) and endogenous (internal) factors.
