How to choose accommodation for a Syrian?

cage, needed, dzungarian, hamster

On sale you can find models of even more compact sizes, but they are only suitable for carrying animals. the Syrian will not be comfortable living in cramped conditions. To provide the pet with more space, bird cages are being altered. they are high, so they can be equipped with a second floor, which is what some rodent owners are doing. But this option has its drawbacks. The safety of the animal is questionable, because there is no guarantee that the additional floor is securely fixed.

What could be better for a Syrian than a large cage with wheels and labyrinths ?! The optimal and inexpensive option is rectangular cages for Syrian hamsters, 3727 cm in size, 36 cm in height.

Convenient if the second floor is in the middle and extends to the entire space. In the horizontal partition there is a hole for the stairs to go down the steps.

There are many two-story rodent dwellings on sale, where the second floors extend up to half, this is also convenient, but it should not be ruled out that the hamster may fall off during active games. There were cases when, during falls from the second floor, rodents injured their legs, but such situations are rare.

Choosing a cage for a Syrian hamster

The Syrian hamster will become the best friend for both adults and children. But the first in your house should appear a cage for a Syrian hamster and only after that a cute animal. You need to approach the purchase responsibly, because the animal will spend a lot of time in its house. When choosing a home, you need to take into account the habits, lifestyle and size of the pet.

The best option for a Syrian

A suitable cage size for a Syrian, regardless of the number of storeys. 5030 cm, at least 25 cm in height with the ability to equip it to your liking. Often they combine two or more dwellings, build labyrinths between them, connect with terrariums and aquariums.

The Syrian’s house should be spacious, there is a logical explanation for this. In the wild, hamsters have at their disposal huge territories of the steppes, their burrows are located at a decent distance from each other.

When buying, you need to pay attention to the following points:

  • For the Syrian hamster, size and diameter are more important than number of storeys.
  • European experts have set standards: the area of the cage for a Syrian hamster should be 1500 square meters. cm, that is, the bottom dimensions should not be less than 5030 cm.
  • Cramped housing is hazardous to health. The animal may develop physical inactivity, obesity. The hamster in such conditions is unhappy and is unlikely to live up to one and a half years, although the normal life span is 2. 2.5 years.
  • It’s good if the distance between floors is at least 30 cm.
  • The door should be wide so that the owner’s hand can easily pass through it along with the pet.
  • It is better to choose a dwelling with a solid pallet, the mesh can injure the animal.

Important: when choosing a house for hamsters of this breed, pay attention to the distance between the rods, which should be from 5 to 10 mm.

Cubs of Syrian hamsters at ten days of age are able to crawl through a slot 7-8 mm wide, so for reproduction you need to buy a dwelling with 5 mm rods.

You can read about filling the cage with the necessary accessories in the article on arranging the cage. And also you will find the necessary information about what else is needed to care for a hamster in the article on what you need to keep a hamster.

Can a Dzungarian hamster live in a plastic container or jar??

This is an unacceptable option for the animal. Dzungariki cannot live in jars, containers and similar containers. Closed limited space and lack of free space will lead to the fact that the jungarik will quickly gain excess weight.

Due to the lack of proper ventilation, “heavy” air stagnates in the cans, the walls fog up. It is an ideal environment for harmful bacteria to emerge and multiply. Therefore, the lifespan of individuals in such conditions is minimal.

How to set up a cage for a Dzungarian hamster

Additional attributes can be placed in a spacious cage. Some of them are required, others are set at the request of the owners.

An important attribute for the comfortable existence of Dzungarian hamsters is bedding. This is the substrate that covers the bottom. You cannot take cotton wool, bandages and other materials consisting of threads for these purposes (so that the animals do not get entangled in them).

Also banned are sawdust from pine and cedar, as they are sources of respiratory diseases in rodents.

The traditional option is hardwood sawdust. Layer. not less than 6 cm. An alternative is to buy ready-made bedding. These are special fillers, silica gels, granular mixtures.

Other necessary elements of the “interior” for dzungarian people

The house is a secluded place in which the animal will store its supplies and sleep. Mandatory elements are a wide entrance and a solid roof.

Feeder. small size, capacity, sides 1-1.5 cm.

Drinking bowl. it is better to buy special products, since the hamster will turn over ordinary bowls / lids. The optimal solution is a nipple drinker attached to the outside of the cage.

Running wheel. an element necessary for the jungarik to receive daily loads, stretch his paws and train the cardiovascular system.

  • diameter. not less than 20 cm;
  • non-slippery surface;
  • fastening on rods.
  • Banned wheels with crossbars and net.

Mineral-salt stone. needed for natural needs (grinding teeth), it will also enrich the animal’s body with useful microelements.

Memo for owners of Dzungarian hamsters

  • Furry’s dwelling, should be away from the music center, TV and other noisy devices.
  • Temperature stability. Suitable indicators are 18-21C. When the mark falls below 10 degrees, individuals hibernate.
  • Protection from cats. Dzungariki are an easy target for mustachioed pets, the cages should be placed out of their reach.

How often should the cage be washed

Regular cleaning is a guarantee of a healthy atmosphere inside the cage and the absence of foreign unpleasant odors. The cleaning of the contaminated bedding in the pallet is carried out daily.

General cleaning time. once every 2 weeks. Major cleaning consists of successive stages.

  • To plant a dzungarik in a temporary dwelling.
  • Discard all litter from the pallet. Leave a small handful of the contents so that the hamster’s smell does not disappear.
  • Discard rotten food from hamster supplies. The entire “pantry” cannot be removed, since the loss of savings will turn into severe stress for the dzhungarik.
  • Wash the tray with warm water. Use baby soap, animal shampoos as a detergent. Do not take cleaning agents with an aggressive composition (whiteness, powder).
  • Sponge soaked in soapy water, treat the rods. Wipe all attributes and accessories with a dry cloth.
  • Wait until it is completely dry. Add new filler, mix with a handful of old.
  • Let the dzungarik into his clean house.

Dzungarian hamster cage sizes: standards and norms

Individuals of the Dzungarian breed are distinguished by increased playfulness, activity, restlessness, so they need a spacious and free cage. The optimal area for one hamster by standards is 1500 sq. Cm. The corresponding size of the cage is 50×30 cm.

  • height not less than 30 cm;
  • the maximum distance between the rods is 1 cm;
  • pallet. 35×55 cm.

In cramped cages, Dzungarian hamsters are rapidly gaining weight. Due to the lack of physical activity, they develop obesity. The animal looks apathetic, sleepy. Health problems begin, life expectancy is shortened.

Therefore, it is extremely important that the cage allows the jungar to move freely.

The BEST hamster cages available!

[good title = “Interesting to know!”] Houses of Dzungarian hamsters in the wild. underground burrows up to 1 meter deep. Each living pit has many passages, branches, chambers that hamsters use as bedrooms, storage rooms and latrines. [/ Good]

One-story or multi-story: what to choose?

The classic version is a one-story metal cage. It is easy to disassemble, it is convenient and quick to clean. Such a structure can be additionally equipped with a tunnel or a corral: there will be more space for running at the dzhungarik.

The second option is a cage with several floors. For such a house, a number of additional requirements are put forward.

Cparks / Pixabay

The distance between floors is from 17 to 25 cm.If the height is more than 30 cm, the level of injury increases.

The floor should be solid plastic, as food, bedding and rodent legs will fall through the grate when running.
Pay attention to the cages with adjustable height of the tiers.

So which is the best option? Dzungarian hamsters are recommended to select large one-story cages. Individuals love jogging and free space. This is much more interesting for them than climbing or climbing up the rods.

The correct pallet: what is it?

This is a structural element, a kind of “waste pit” of the cell. Garbage and crumbs are poured here, waste flows down. There are several types of pallets.

The separation takes place on the basis of the mechanism of action (retractable), material of manufacture, dimensions.

A dwelling for a Dzungarian hamster should be equipped with a deep pallet. Individuals in the process of their games scatter the filler, and the high walls of the pallet will not allow debris to fly out of the cage.

What else does a hamster need to be completely happy?

Hamsters are very fond of when they put branches of various edible trees in their cage, for example, an apple tree. It is source of vitamins for a pet and an opportunity to sharpen its teeth.

A special treat for hamsters will be a great gift for your pet. As a rule, this is a stick covered with various goodies: grains, dried fruits, grass, etc. But there are also delicacies of a different shape, for example, in the form of a pipe. Treats are hung with special fasteners that come with the kit, either to the ceiling or to the wall of the cage.

Additional sections and floors

For an animal, the presence of additional floors does not matter. This is even more interesting to the owner. When choosing a multi-storey cell, you should pay special attention to the fact that the distance between the floors should be no more than 30 cm and no less than 18 cm.

Preference should be given to a cage in which you can independently set the floor levels. And the shelves should not be made of rods, but of solid plastic. Slatted floors on floors can cause injury to your pet. And the fact that food and material for the nest will fall through it will upset the animal and give it a lot of inconvenience.

Cage equipment

The equipment of a good cage is just as important as its size. Let’s find out what should be in a hamster’s cage.

The next required attribute for a hamster cage is a wheel. It can be metal or plastic. The first is more durable, because the hamster can chew on plastic. But the plastic wheel makes less noise. In addition, in a steel wheel there is often a large distance between the rods, which sometimes leads to trauma to the legs of the rodent (fractures are not rare). Therefore, we recommend a quality solid plastic wheel (cheap options are not durable).

Instead of a wheel, you can purchase a plastic ball in which the hamster will run on the floor.

There must be two bowls for food in the cage. One for dry food, the other for wet food. But you can get by with one.

For hamsters, it is convenient to use a drinker with a teat or nipple.

If you put a bowl of water in a cage, then the animal can overturn it or throw a litter.

What cage is needed for a Dzungarian hamster

A hamster, like any living creature, needs a comfortable home. These small animals live in captivity and need special treatment. Choosing the right cage and accessories will make it a pleasure to watch your pet’s life.

To create a comfortable living environment for your hamster, you need to know their needs. How to choose a cage? Subject to simple rules, choosing the right housing will not be difficult.

Size matters

Large hamster cages not only provide room for movement, but also provide psychological comfort for the animal. When the animal does not feel in captivity and cramped conditions, it behaves more naturally.

And two-story cells with stairs, all kinds of pipes and tunnels will be interesting even for the owner. It is very interesting to watch how the hamster warms up and frolics. Cages with a large number of stairs and tunnels have only one drawback. they are inconvenient to disassemble in order to wash.

When choosing a cage, you should pay special attention to the distance between the rods. It should not exceed 2 cm. Indeed, despite the fact that the hamsters are outwardly voluminous, they can crawl into the tiniest cracks. It is definitely worth checking that there are no bent and damaged rods.

The bottom in the cages can be static and retractable. The second option is more convenient in terms of cleaning. It is enough to push it out and clean it without removing the animal from the cage. But periodically it is necessary to wash the cage completely. Otherwise, a specific unpleasant odor may appear.

If the cage is not too small, then it is very convenient to have two doors. So during the assembly of the cage it can be very difficult to install all the accessories with one hand. And two doors allow you to get full access to the inside of the cage. This is especially true for large cells with many tunnels, ladders, etc.

Where to put the cage

An equally important question is where to put the hamster cage. You cannot put a cage:

  • in a draft;
  • near heating appliances;
  • next to a TV or radio;
  • near the curtains (if the hamster reaches them, it will gnaw and make a nest).

A comfortable hamster cage is the key to a healthy and cheerful pet. And watching such an animal will bring nothing but pleasure.

How much is?

If you still have any questions, write in the comments, our experts will definitely answer them.

Hamster cage (house)

For those who do not have the skills to keep animals, it is convenient to start comprehending this difficult science with hamsters. They are unpretentious and get along well in cages. They are easy to feed and keep clean. They forgive inexperienced owners for those mistakes that can destroy more gentle animals and birds.

Dzungarian hamsters, gray with a dark stripe on the back, just crumbs. about five centimeters long. Syrian hamsters (their second name is golden) three times larger than dzungariks.

Hamster housing. a cage covered with a fine mesh, an aquarium or terrarium with a secure mesh roof. A cage with an area of 30×40 and a height of 30 centimeters will suit one Syrian hamster. The house for the hamster must be strong enough so that he does not gnaw a hole or move his head over the ceiling and run away.

We put different boxes and branches in the cage. The hamster will chew on pieces of wood to grind down its ever-growing teeth. The more varied the interior of the cage, the more actively the hamster climbs, sways and jumps. It is helpful to update your surroundings as often as possible. This will make the tenant move more while exploring innovations. Then he will not get fat, he will be healthy and live longer. Average lifespan of hamsters in captivity. about three years.

If the hamster’s housing is closed from the sides, cover the floor with sawdust and or coarse sand.

We carry out cleaning as follows: sift the sand, rinse and dry it in the air or ignite.

Do not squeeze the hamster in a fist and do not drag him to wash with soap. This is torture for him. And soap is categorically contraindicated. The hamster washes himself, with his paws and tongue, this is quite enough.

From the burrowing way of life, which was once led by free hamsters, they have preserved cleanliness. In burrows, they arrange toilets away from the nest, in special coffers. In the cage, in a free corner, put a flat, easy-to-clean tray, transfer the litter soaked by the hamsters into it.

Let’s provide the nest material for the hamster. Cotton wool and rags are good for adults, but if babies are born, they can get entangled in them. Better to give hay or paper, but not newspapers. printing ink is harmful. It would be nice to equip a plywood house under the nest. Hamsters carry food supplies there in swollen cheek pouches. So we estimate the size of the entrance on the spot.

Rodents are very fertile. One and a half month old hamsters can become parents. The kids are safely hidden in the house. We learn about their appearance by weak creaking sounds. The hamster should not be disturbed now, the babies should not be touched. An anxious mother may drag her cubs from corner to corner in search of shelter or, in panic, injure and gnaw the newborn. She can eat newborns even when she lacks protein feed (milk, eggs, cottage cheese).

The female, using her teeth, will not allow the male to reach the nest at this time. We’ll put him a second house, sorry for him. We will plant especially aggressive males before the appearance of offspring.

In nature, hamsters feed on seeds, herbs, berries, insects. Basic rules: do not overfeed animals in captivity, food should be fresh and varied. The hamster will tell you how much food you need. After eating, he will fill the cheek pouches with cereals, seeds or carrots and take them to the nest. the instinct of storing turns on. Let him make and use pantries. We arrange fasting days: when the feeder is empty, the hungry animal goes to the pantry.

You cannot pamper your hamster with high-calorie and tasty food: nuts, seeds, cereals. he will eat much more of these delicacies than is required. In captivity, there is no need to move in search of food, there are no competitors, no enemies, there are no conditions for hibernation. Our pets spend much less energy, and eat with appetite. A fat animal loses mobility, consumes less energy and becomes even more fat. So. round. Obesity. the trouble of all the inhabitants of the cells.

What should fit in a cage

Before choosing a cage for a hamster, it is worth considering that it will fit all the things you need for a hamster:

  • bed dress;
  • feeder;
  • drinker;
  • wheel;
  • hamster house;
  • toys.

Bedding should not be made from cedar or pine chips. Poplar is a safer option if you want wood bedding, but many prefer to use paper or other fabric-based materials.

A shallow but heavy bowl (anything that cannot be turned over easily) is ideal as a hamster bowl. A small ceramic or porcelain plate is a good choice as they are sturdy and will not be chewed by the hamster.

A small hanging water bottle with a stainless steel faucet is the most commonly used water container in a hamster cage. Bowl spills, gets dirty, or fills with other materials too often, but both water sources can be used to maximize the hamster‘s water supply.

Hamsters love to run and need somewhere to do this physical activity, so buy the largest, highest quality sports wheel you can. It should have a solid running surface as well as cruciform supports, so it is recommended that you choose a wheel that mounts to the side of the cage. Make sure the wheel is quiet, as hamsters love to run at night. A small amount of vegetable oil dripping onto the wheel axle can help reduce the volume from the wheel.

Your hamster will appreciate a private rest for sleeping. A small cardboard box, plastic box, wooden box, or other items such as half a coconut shell or a small clay pot are fine for a house where the hamster can hide.

Cell types

Cell selection principles

When choosing a material for a cage, you should consider the main differences between:

  • wire cage;
  • plastic modular cage (with a lot of compartments and tubes);
  • aquarium (with protected mesh cover).

Each type of hamster cage has its own advantages and disadvantages.

In general, the wire cage that the plastic tray is inserted into is the easiest to clean. Aquariums aren’t difficult to clean either, but they can be heavy and awkward to move around while cleaning.

A wire cage is the best option for ventilation. Pipes and closed sections in plastic cages can lead to real air circulation problems. Likewise, aquariums also have insufficient air circulation.

Each type of hamster cage has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Despite their small size, Jungar hamsters require ample space to run and play, and the actual cage area is an important factor (many modular cages seem to be quite large, but in fact they have little free space). In general, many hamster cages are too small.

The space between the rods on a hamster cage should be no more than 0.5cm apart. a size that is really hard to find on wire cages, but a small hamster cage is ideal for tutu.

Cages for Syrian and Dzungarian hamsters

Remember that different breeds of hamsters need different cages. Syrian hamsters are the largest popular domestic hamster breeds. They can grow up to 17cm in length, which means you need a cage that gives them plenty of room to run.

Their large size also means you don’t have to worry too much about compressing the wire cage grid.

Glass or plastic containers with a capacity of 150 liters are a good size for a Syrian hamster’s cage. However, these dimensions can take up a lot of space, so you might want to consider a layered wire cage as well.

Cages with lots of tubes are fun for hamsters, but large hamsters like Syrian hamsters can break out of these cages. Some Syrian hamsters like to chew on connecting tubes, allowing themselves to escape.

If you decide to opt for a cage with connecting pipes, keep an eye on your Syrian hamster to make sure it doesn’t chew on plastic connectors.

Jungra hamsters are smaller than their Syrian relatives. There are several different types of dwarf hamsters. These hamsters need dwarf hamster cages that meet their needs.

There are several facts about Dzungarian hamsters that will influence the choice of your cage.

Why hamsters need LARGE cages

Campbell’s Russian dwarf hamsters are tougher than friendly Syrians, which means keeping an eye out for interactions between dwarf hamsters and babies. They are also more nocturnal than other breeds, and their tiny size means they can easily slip through wire racks during the night. These hamsters need solid cages with no rods or gaps where they can escape.

Jungar winter white hamsters, like American Campbell’s hamsters, are very small and need a cage they cannot squeeze out of. This breed of hamster has a lot of energy, so you will also need to provide a wheel and enough room for your hamster to run, rummage and explore.

Generally, a hamster cage with hard plastic or glass sides is the best cage for Djungarian hamsters. These cells will keep them safe and prevent them from waking you up at night.

Where to place your hamster cage

There are three main points to consider when placing a hamster cage:

  • Drafts can be a big problem

Hamsters, in any situation that increases their stress, will have less resistance to changes in temperature and pathogens and toxins in the air. Therefore, wherever you place the cages, there should be as little drafts as possible. One of the invisible hazards is a fireplace or stove, which can emit tiny bursts of carbon monoxide from time to time.

  • Light and sound are factors that work both ways.

A bedroom hamster running on a sports wheel from midnight to dawn can be a serious problem. For the first week or so, recommends storing your own sounds and lights surrounding cells in a slightly “dim” mode.

  • Human activities can reveal a hamster’s personality

Many young hamsters like to show off when they know that people are in the room. By placing them where you spend your evenings, you will begin to establish a wakeful and playful tone.

Sociable hamsters love to be the center of attention, and this can be especially true for Djungarian hamsters if you want to leave them alone for a while.

Cages for Dzungarian hamsters: what they are and how to clean them?

The Dzungarian hamster is an interesting and funny animal that can often be found in apartments as a pet. It is believed that these animals do not live long, but their lifespan depends on the conditions of detention. The main factor for ensuring a full and comfortable life of a fluffy pet is the acquisition of a high-quality cage.

Requirements

The main criteria for choosing a cage are its comfort and safety for a pet. In addition, the future home of a furry friend should be convenient for its owner. The owner needs to choose in advance the place where the new dwelling will be located, as well as select the product for a certain size, not less than the minimum recommended for the dzhungarik.

The materials from which the cage is made must not only be durable and strong, but also safe. Rodents taste everything they see, so the bars of the lattice they have tested should not be harmful to the animal’s health.

Choose a cage that is easier to clean. It is more convenient to buy a product with a pallet. Be sure to check if the door closes well.

Dzungariki are very curious creatures, prone to escapes, and a weak locking device may not withstand his sharp teeth. Try to buy a home with built-in attributes in advance. This will be a more economical option, besides, in the future you will not have to think about where and how best to install all additional devices.

How to equip?

To provide a fluffy pet with a full life, it is not enough for him to offer in an empty cage. It must have a house in which the hamster will rest and hide its supplies. Place the house somewhere in the corner. Mandatory attributes are a drinking bowl and a feeder. They usually come with the cage, but are sold separately.

Every day the hamster must run several kilometers. The treadmill will help ensure this activity. Try to set it not very low. If the cage contains more than one individual, then one pet can injure its neighbor, who climbed under the low-located wheel.

For dental health, place a chalk or mineral stone in your home. In its absence, the hamster will begin to gnaw on the rods in order to grind off its fast-growing teeth. By the way, if even in the presence of a stone, the animal does not stop gnawing on the cage, then, most likely, he is simply bored, in this case, equip his dwelling with tunnels, pipes, podiums.

These items attract not only hamsters, but also their owners. It is very interesting to watch how the pet studies the objects of its interior, runs through the pipes, drags various things that are interesting to it. It is recommended to buy a spacious cage to accommodate all these important items.

How to clean properly?

Regular cleaning of the cage affects not only the health and comfort of the pet itself, but also the atmosphere in the owner’s home. Dzungariki. although they are small animals, their waste products quickly begin to emit unpleasant odors if they are not removed in time.

Every day, the responsible owner must carry out spot cleaning of the hamster’s home, that is, remove spilled food, change the water, and remove waste products. A complete replacement of the filler is done every two weeks.

The following steps should be followed when cleaning your pet’s home:

  • put the hamster in a temporary dwelling, even an ordinary bank will do;
  • discard the litter from the pallet, but leave a handful of the old contents;
  • remove only rotten foods from the hamster’s stocks that can be poisoned; do not touch his “pantry” completely, as he tried very hard to accumulate a large supply, and will be under stress upon discovering the loss;
  • thoroughly rinse the pan with warm water using a sponge, you can use baby shampoos;
  • wipe all interior items in the cage and twigs with a damp cloth;
  • wipe the tray and rods dry, replace all the attributes, mix the fresh filler with the left handful of the old and pour it into the cage.

Materials (edit)

  • Made of metal rods. A good ventilated home in which the rodent feels quite comfortable. The inconvenience is that through the bars you can clearly hear the noise that the hamster makes, and dirt always forms around. Filler and debris can easily penetrate the rods. The grill itself must be made of high quality solid metal.

Do not take products made of copper or aluminum. the animal gnaws everything, so it will quickly render such rods unusable.

  • Plastic or glass aquarium. In such a closed dwelling, the noise level is significantly reduced, and there is also almost no debris. In addition, it is the safest option for a home with cats. it is unlikely that a predator will get to a rodent that is kept in an aquarium under a breathable mesh. However, the hamster himself in such a dwelling will be uncomfortable, since it does not allow air to pass through well.

For the owner, the inconvenience is that the aquarium is difficult to clean.

  • Lattice cage with plastic tray. This is the preferred option. Such a cage is easy to clean up. If the dwelling is two-level, and the “floor” of the second floor is made in the form of a lattice, then check if the pet is injured by getting stuck with its legs or abdomen between the rods. If the risk of injury is high, then cover the second level with cardboard.

It is recommended to buy cages in which the second floor is made of plastic and high-quality reinforced. Try to avoid wooden elements in the cage, as wood absorbs unpleasant odors and also becomes a favorite material for grinding rodent incisors.

Selection recommendations

Usually, on the first floor, animals prefer to be engaged in vigorous activity, and on the second. to relax, although, of course, each pet has its own preferences.

Where to put?

If the house contains other pets, namely cats and dogs, then it is recommended to place the cage with the hamster so that predators cannot get to such a tasty prey.

And also when choosing a place for a dwelling, pay attention to such points as:

  • no drafts. hamsters are prone to colds, so keep your pet away from drafts;
  • lack of direct sunlight. overheating for a hamster is just as dangerous as hypothermia, so do not leave the animal in the sun or near a window; do not allow location near electrical and heating devices;
  • lack of noise. do not place the cage near loudly operating equipment, for example, near a TV set or music speakers; the cage should be in a quiet, cozy place so that nothing will bother the pet.

Place the cage in a cardboard rack for easy cleaning. It can be done from a regular box by cutting off the height of the walls.

Then you don’t have to clean up garbage around the cage every day, you just need to shake out the box and put it back under the cage.
