What kind of water to put in a turtle aquarium

What kind of water should be poured into the aquarium?

Choose soft, neutral water for your aquarium. In large metropolitan areas, such water flows in water pipes. In places where the water supply is connected to artesian wells, the water is too hard. It is suitable only for viviparous fish, adapted to all kinds of adversity.

Too hard aquarium water can be softened by mixing it with mild distilled water or rainwater. Water from melted snow / ice will also work. Collect both rainwater and ice after continuous long-term rainfall. For a water change in the aquarium, you can mix in 1/4 of the rainwater.

If you decide to use tap water, then follow these requirements:

  • Do not use tap water. Pour it into a jar, you will notice that its walls will be covered with bubbles. These are gases. They got into the liquid when it was passed through cleaning filters. By putting a fish into such water, you risk that its body and gills will become covered with bubbles, and ulcers form on the affected areas.
  • Make sure the water is free of chlorine. If the water contains more than 0.1 milligram of chlorine, then young fish and larvae will die in a couple of hours. A concentration of 0.05 milligrams of water will kill fish eggs.
  • Monitor the pH level. A change in pH level is often observed in an artificial reservoir with soft water and low carbonate, under strong sunlight. To remove free acid, you need to blow the water column with air and deliver water to the aquarium in portions, and the pH should be at least 7.

If you observe these indicators of water in the aquarium, then it will not turn green for a long time, and fish and plants will fully develop.

What kind of water to pour into the aquarium?

Many people who decide to start an aquarium want to know all the little things about fish keeping, plant selection and water care. But the first dilemma faced by the inexperienced aquarist. what kind of water to pour into the aquarium? There are a number of requirements for the quality of water and several ways to purify it, which will help to achieve the desired consistency.

Purification of water in the aquarium

It is not enough to simply prepare the water and pour it into the aquarium. It requires follow-up care, which includes filtration and ozonation. The following types of filters are considered the most common:

  • Internal. The most budgetary, and therefore the most common option. It is a pump that displaces liquid through a filtering composition made of a foam rubber sponge
  • External. They are more often bought for large volumes. They do not take up unnecessary space inside the aquarium and have large volumes of filter media. Sterilizers are also installed on the external filter.

As you can see, the collection of water for the aquarium and its further control is a simple process.

Necessary equipment

Regardless of the type of turtle, every aquarium must be properly equipped. The reptile’s dwelling should match the natural conditions of its life as best as possible. But the individual characteristics of the arrangement of its living space will depend on the type of turtle. Turtles are not clean and pollute the water with food debris and excrement.

It is recommended to use a filter with a water capacity of 2 aquarium volumes per hour. In addition, equipment such as:

  • conventional incandescent lamp (40 W);
  • ultraviolet lamp (UVB 5%);
  • water heater.

A place for feeding should be allocated by placing a feeder.

For terrestrial species, set up a small swimming pool in the terrarium

The decorative design of the home is also important: they place beautiful driftwood, stones and shelters where the pet can retire and relax

Sex of red-eared turtles

By the age of 4 years, males and 5-6 years old, females reach sexual maturity, but the sex of red-eared turtles can be determined already in the second year of life. Males have longer, in contrast to females, claws on their front legs. They help to stay on the female during mating. The male’s tail is thicker and longer than that of the female, and the cloaca is located farther from the shell. Plastron (the lower part of the shell), in females is flat, and in males it is concave, which helps the male to take a comfortable position during intercourse. In red-eared turtles of the same age, males are smaller than females, but the spots on the head are larger and brighter.

Under good conditions, red-eared turtles live up to 60 years.

What to feed red-eared turtles

In the first two years of life, red-eared turtles are fed daily, then they switch to the regimen 2-3 times a week.

You can feed your pets only natural food, or you can alternate it with dry balanced food. Dry feeds from Tetra and Sera are good, they are balanced and already contain the vitamins the turtles need.

balanced food for young turtles

If you feed a young turtle with this food, then there is no need to give calcium separately, it already has everything you need for it.

Many aquarium plants are suitable for natural food, for example, duckweed, ricia, hornwort, ludwigia, spirogyra, edogonium, anacharis, ceraptopteris, spiral vallisneria, javanese moss, thailand fern, sagittaria. In summer, it is best to give the turtle dandelions, plantain, carrot tops from green food. It is also necessary sometimes to offer her twigs of birch, willow or any fruit trees (you can directly with leaves). the need for fiber is satisfied and it becomes possible to gnaw on solid food, which prevents the growth of the beak. For the winter, you can dry plants such as dandelion, nettle, oregano, clover, calendula, burdock. the turtle will happily eat them. You can also give all this fresh.

With great pleasure, the turtles eat pumpkin, melon, red bell pepper and some other vegetables and fruits, mainly red and yellow (for some reason they like this color more).

Homemade potted plants are grown for turtles such as geranium, hibiscus, tradescantia.

Tomatoes, cabbage, peas, beans, radishes, radishes, spinach, mushrooms, pineapples, potatoes, onions, garlic, cherries, pears cannot be fed from “greens”.

In the first years of life, the diet of turtles should consist of approximately equal parts of animal and plant food, and then the food should become less and less nutritious and more fortified, that is, almost only greens.

What kind of animal food is given to red-eared turtles? Small pieces of raw and boiled beef, lean fish, earthworms, gammarus, bloodworms, tubifex are placed in the water and make sure that such food is eaten in half an hour. If food remains, it must be removed, otherwise the water will deteriorate. So that the water does not spoil, you can gradually teach the turtle to eat on the shore, putting food closer and closer to land. To replenish the calcium deficiency in the body of the turtle, some amateurs let live fish and snails into the aquarium for her to feed. The way to feed is not very humane, but it also has a place to be.

Red-eared turtle compatibility

By the way, on the forums I often see questions about who you can keep a red-eared turtle with. To understand this, it is enough to look at how this turtle tears food with its long claws or grinds coils with its powerful jaws.

Newts and frogs for living together with a red-eared turtle are not an option, they may get along with young red-eared turtle, and then the turtles will grow up and still eat such neighbors. With fish. also a problem, small ones are eaten almost immediately, large ones. gradually, first gnawing at the fins, then the fish themselves are slaughtered. And why? Many experiment, some even sometimes survive fish, but these are most often huge aggressive cichlids, in the same huge aquariums.

Should I take the turtle in my arms?

Recall that red-eared turtles live at home in an aquarium. When getting an animal out of the water, be prepared for it to be slippery. But this is not the main difficulty. The yellow-bellied creature is 100% likely to resist such contact. The turtle will begin to hiss, scratch you with powerful paws with sharp claws, bite, it is possible that an attempt to empty the intestines directly into your palm is possible.

So in theory, you can pick up your pet, but is there a need for this tactile contact? If touching cannot be avoided, take the animal with both hands, fix it carefully, but firmly, then the turtle will not slip out, and you will not be bitten.

After contact, be sure to wash your hands with soap and water. Make sure children do this especially. Explain to the kids that tenderness with the red-eared is unacceptable: these cute, at first glance, creatures can be dangerous, because carry salmonellosis. For this reason, animals should not walk around the kitchen and, moreover, the dining table. Also, do not wash your pet or its aquarium and accessories in the kitchen sink or bathtub.

Description of the red-eared turtle

The wrinkled carapace of an adult red-eared turtle can reach a length of 28 cm, depending on the subspecies. The patch behind their eyes is not only bright red, but also bright yellow. In general, the color of these turtles is extremely varied, in addition, it changes greatly with age. Young animals are usually bright green, while older ones can turn completely black.

The plastron of red-eared turtles is bright yellow with dark rounded spots. Males of decorated turtles have a long tail and long claws, no notch on the plastron, a slightly more pointed nose than females. Females have short claws, short tail. Females (18-22 cm) are usually larger than males (14-16 cm). During the first 1.5 years of life, they are able to grow up to 7.5 cm, then growth slows down and the turtle grows 1-1.25 cm per year.

For the first 2 years, the turtle is quite capable of growing up to 20 cm or more, thus. the tortoise is not dwarf or decorative, as sellers often convince naive buyers. Trachemys scripta scripta. Length up to 27 cm. Has a very noticeable yellow postorbital spot connected to a strip on the neck. Each rib carapace has a yellow stripe.

Plastron yellow with spots on most of the anterior scutes. Trachemys scripta elegans. Length up to 28 cm. On the head there is a wide red postorbital stripe and narrow stripes on the chin. On each rib carapace along a transverse yellow stripe. Plastron with a large spot on each plate Trachemys scripta troostii. Length up to 21 cm.

Required inventory

Many aquarists assume that changing the water in a tank takes a long time. The implementation of this process does not take much effort. It is only important to have the necessary knowledge and to allocate a little time for the procedure. You will need to purchase some tools to care for the reservoir.

Before starting, you need to determine the type of aquarium. Tanks with a volume of no more than two hundred liters are considered small, the rest of the tanks are large. To replace water in small tanks, the following list of tools will be required:

  • Bucket, 10-12 liters.
  • Rubber hose, 1.5 meters long.
  • Ball valve.
  • Pear siphon.

Partial replacement

Partial replacement of water in the aquarium is carried out in several cases.

If the fluid is changed once a week, then it is not worth changing more than 20% of the total volume. It is only necessary to refresh the water, remove excess organic residues from it.

It is possible to replace more than 20% of the liquid in order to eliminate the increased saturation of water with carbon dioxide. This is due to excessive fertilization or an increase in daylight hours. In this case, you need to add fresh water every few weeks. This will help reduce impurities in the aquarium.

Fresh water can be added in case of contamination of the tank with medications, during the treatment of the fish. All funds are accompanied by an instruction in which it should be written how much water should be replaced. It must be remembered that some drugs can adversely affect certain molluscs and fish. In this case, it is required to replace half of the entire liquid in the reservoir.

Changing the water in the aquarium: 5 step-by-step steps to change

The aquarium is not only an element of the room decor, but also a home for fish. Novice hobbyists should keep an eye on the tank and its inhabitants. A dirty environment becomes a place for the development of harmful microbes that cause diseases of fish and algae. Changing the water in the aquarium is necessary to maintain biobalance. The frequency of this procedure directly depends on the volume of the reservoir. the larger it is, the less often it should be replaced.

How often

There are several factors to consider in this matter.

The main aspect when changing water is the so-called population in the reservoir. Some fish prefer old water. Frequent fluid changes lead to illness and other ailments.

Algae also play an important role. From their abundance, the amount and frequency of water changes can vary. Plants are a living filter in the aquarium. The more algae, the less frequent fluid changes occur.

Treating Turtle Water? How to dechlorinate. Simple Solutions

The aquarist must decide for himself how often to change. To do this, you need to know the volume of the tank, the preferences of the inhabitants, the presence of filtering devices.

Water change rules

I would like to note that it is necessary to change the water in the tank only after cleaning it, otherwise it will be a waste of time and effort. It is worth starting a water change only after several months have passed, since then the desired habitat begins to form in the aquarium.

  • Before starting work, it is required to clean the equipment and decorative elements from food debris and other formations.
  • After that, wipe all the walls of the tank from plaque.
  • It is necessary to remove all food and dead algae from the soil.
  • Plants need to be thinned out. Trim any overgrown ends if necessary.
  • Siphon the soil of the tank.

Owners of large aquariums should not be discouraged. It will be even easier to change the water in such tanks. First you need to prepare the hose. One end of it needs to be lowered into the aquarium, and the other end is brought to the sink. Allow the water to drain. After that, pour the previously settled liquid into the aquarium.

To maintain the biobalance of the reservoir, you need to change the water correctly. It is imperative to monitor the rigidity and try to keep its level the same as that of the liquid in the tank. This is necessary in order not to harm some types of algae, which react painfully to changes in hardness indicators.

It is not recommended to replace more than one fifth of the total volume of water in order not to violate the established biobalance.

Why do you need

After arranging the tank with algae and fish, the aquarist must create a stable regime in it to maintain the healthy development of its inhabitants. In the process of life, many elements are released that can have both positive and negative effects. For example, ammonia released from dead plant residues and food particles is detrimental to the inhabitants.

Replacing the water in an aquarium is one of the important components of a healthy ecosystem. Filtration helps to reduce the percentage of harmful substances. They can only be removed with a complete water change.

It is important not to drain all the liquid, but to partially replace it. This is necessary in order to preserve useful elements in the reservoir, which are part of the ecosystem. Before the change, it is required to let the water settle in order to reduce the dissolved oxygen.

During hibernation

In the period preceding wintering, the activity of the red-eared turtle decreases, and during sleep it will remain motionless for 2-3 months.

Therefore, for the convenience of maintaining the aquaterrarium, the water level can be reduced almost to the ground level. The water level is ideal so that it completely covers the turtle.

During the waking period

An adult grows up to 30 cm in diameter. For such an animal, the minimum size of the aquaterrarium is 150 liters.

In this case, the water must fill at least ⅔ of the volume, that is, 100 liters. If the aquarium contains another turtle, then the volume of water should be increased by one and a half times.

READ  How to properly install the internal filter in the aquarium

The minimum distance between the surface of the water and the top edge of the aquarium is 15 cm. The red-eared turtle is an active animal. There should be enough water in the aquaterrarium for free swimming.

If the amphibian turns over on its back, it should be able to freely roll over in the water, that is, the water level in the aquarium of an adult turtle should be at least 30 cm.

Attention! These turtles also have the peculiarity of jumping from land into the water, so it is necessary to fill in such an amount that will allow the reptile to dive.

How much to pour?

In different periods of life, the red-eared turtle needs a different amount of water. Consider the volume for the period of wakefulness and hibernation.

What should be?

To fill the aquarium, you need to use water that has been settled for several days. Suitable from the tap, it meets almost all the characteristics described below.

Only the chlorine level in it is not suitable for turtles, settling the water will allow the chlorine to evaporate.

Parameters During the waking period During hibernation
Acidity, pH 6.5-7.5 6.5-7.5
Rigidity average average
Temperature 20-28, the best is 25 ℃, and for the young, the water temperature less than 25 ℃ is life-threatening 10-15 ℃.
Salinity,‰ fresh 0.5 ‰ fresh 0.5 ‰

Interesting! At home, the turtle can do without hibernation. But if the owner notices signs that the pet is preparing for hibernation (eats little, has become inactive), it is impossible to prevent falling asleep.

A responsible owner will prepare the conditions for hibernation, including lowering the fluid level and gradually (this is important) reduce the water temperature to 10-15 ℃.

The turtles themselves need to be bathed periodically, especially if there are children in the house.

To do this, mix settled water (23-25 ℃) and soda in a ratio of 1 liter to 1 teaspoon.

The capacity must be chosen so that the turtle’s head can be above the surface, and the paws reach the bottom. After 15-20 minutes “bath” the turtle is rinsed and sent to the aquaterrarium.

How to keep order?

The water in an aquarium with a turtle becomes polluted quickly: there are pieces of food and life here. The water in the aquarium should be changed as it gets dirty, but at least 2 times a week.

Attention! At the same time, it is not necessary to completely change all the water to maintain the microclimate. It is enough to replace the ⅓ part.

A filter will be a good helper in the “care” of the turtle’s water. It is chosen at the rate of 2-3 times the volume of the aquarium.

There are 2 types of aquarium filters:

  • Interior. Suitable for aquariums up to 100 liters in size where baby turtles can be kept. It must be rinsed at least once a week, as the filter sponge inside it quickly becomes dirty. In adults, the water will become polluted quickly, and the internal filter will not cope.
  • External or canister filter. These filters are more powerful and can purify a large volume of water at a time.

It should be used for large aquariums over 100 liters in volume.

It is an external container connected by tubes to the aquarium. Depending on the characteristics, it can be washed once a month or less.

  • The addition to the mechanical filter will be a biofilter. The mechanism of action is the work of bacteria living in the aquarium. They recycle the ammonia generated by rotting waste products and food debris. For beneficial bacteria, you need to create conditions so that they work more efficiently, such a condition is a biofilter.
  • Some filters have a built-in aeration function. Artificial aeration is not needed for the turtle itself. However, if algae grow in the aquarium to create a microclimate close to the natural microclimate, or other living organisms are present, it is better to supply oxygen.

The health of the turtle and the prevention of hibernation requires maintaining a constant temperature in the aquaterrarium. Installing a thermometer is an important step in setting up your turtle’s home. In the case of an aquaterrarium, 2 thermometers are installed: in water and in air.

    • alcohol;
    • liquid crystal (digital);
    • electronic.

An immersion heater is used to heat the water, sometimes the heaters are already built into the aquaterrarium. The most convenient automatic temperature controller is a thermostat. It independently monitors the temperature and turns on / off the heating.

Reference! All devices must be positioned so that the turtle should not chew on them.

The red-eared turtle is demanding in terms of keeping conditions. Water control in the aquaterrarium is a guarantee of pet health.

For an adult turtle, the volume of water in the aquaterrarium should not be less than 100 liters. At the same time, the parameters of the aquaterrarium itself should allow the reptile to swim freely and turn over.

The ideal water temperature for an animal is 25 ℃. Water can be taken from the tap, having previously ensured the evaporation of chlorine.

The aquarium must be equipped with devices for monitoring water parameters: thermometer, filter, heater.

To care for the microclimate, you need to replace at least a third of the water with clean water 2 times a week.

We figure out how much water is needed and what kind of water in an aquarium for a red-eared turtle?

The red-eared turtle has become a popular pet in the home. But the red-eared turtle is far from being as unpretentious as the seller will convince.

Is TAP WATER Safe For Aquatic FISH/Reptiles? (Turtles, Fish, Reptile Water)

An immersion heater is used to heat the water, sometimes the heaters are already built into the aquaterrarium. The most convenient automatic temperature controller is a thermostat. It independently monitors the temperature and turns on / off the heating.

How to keep the temperature in the aquarium

Creating optimal conditions for these reptiles is a multi-step and not an easy task. The aquaterrarium must be spacious and always elongated. Water occupies ¾ of the total volume of the dwelling.

The water temperature for red-eared turtles, as well as the length of their daylight hours, depends on the season. The following indicators will be ideal for adult representatives:

  • in winter and spring: 20⁰С (not lower). 25⁰С with 8 hour lighting;
  • in summer: 25-28⁰ With lighting up to 13 hours;
  • in autumn: 22-26⁰С and 8 hour daylight hours.
  • For young individuals (up to three years old), the water temperature should not fall below 25 degrees.

Short temperature deviations are permissible, but long-term in low temperatures leads to a deterioration in well-being and serious diseases of the lungs and skin.

A conventional immersion heater for aquariums with a thermostat allows you to maintain the temperature within the desired limits. To heat a dry area, additional sources of light and heat may be required: the Repty-Glo lamp for reptiles is best suited, a conventional incandescent lamp with a power of up to 60 W, ultraviolet or medical “solar” is suitable, you can use a mirror-coated lamp and direct it to a specific area, thereby creating a warmer (but not more than 33 degrees) zone. To avoid pet burns, the light source must be located at least 60 cm from the water level.

What water is suitable for red-eared turtles

The red-eared turtle belongs to the freshwater American turtle family. Under natural conditions, they prefer small warm lakes and ponds with swampy shores, river floodplains and shallow bogs. Fresh water is vital for these reptiles, without which adults can do no more than a couple of days. Water for red-eared turtles is a bedroom, a dining room, and a gym. However, for proper development and health, a pet in an aquaterrarium needs a small (about ¼ of the entire surface) island of warm land.

    UV irradiation

One of the biggest problems of little red women is a violation of calcium metabolism (tympanic stomach, rickets, hyperparathyroidism). The reason for this is the lack of UV radiation. For small and adult turtles, it is vital to receive a sufficient amount of ultraviolet rays, since when they are lacking, vitamin D3 is not absorbed in the required amount from the feed. Synthesis of vitamin D3 in the skin under the influence of ultraviolet radiation is the main source of this vitamin in the body of the turtle.

    Repti Glo 5.0 UV lamp.

Therefore, in addition to an incandescent lamp, a special UV lamp for animals of a temperate climate should be installed above the island (Repti Glo 5.0, Repti Zoo 5.0 or any other terrarium UV lamp with m UVA 5%). Both lamps (incandescent and UV) should shine 8-12 hours a day. They need to be turned off at night. The UV lamp must be replaced regularly; the period of effective operation is indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging.

    Water quality

Before figuring out how much water to put a turtle in an aquarium, let’s first figure out what kind of water to put in an aquarium.?

The most optimal option, which is suitable for most residents of multi-storey buildings, is tap water. But there are also several nuances here, about them a little below.

    • Be sure to put a special filter on the tap. For a relatively large aquarium, it will be difficult to filter the water through, say, a “Pitcher” type filter, therefore it is recommended to purchase a “membrane” or “reverse osmosis filter”. These filters are installed directly into the water supply system of the apartment and have a separate tap through which purified water flows. These filters have several replaceable cartridges and not only fight against physical water pollution, but are also capable of destroying most of the known bacteria and viruses. Thus, pouring water into the aquarium should only be purified with special filters.
    • The second nuance, before you start pouring water into the aquarium, leave the tap with purified water open for half a minute and let the water drain. This will save you from possible contamination of the pipes that go after the filter.
    • The third nuance is suitable for those who have a small aquarium. The purified water should be defended. This should be done if you do not have a water heater so that the water temperature becomes 25 degrees.

If it is not possible to settle the water in a separate container, you should move the inhabitants of the aquarium to a separate place, then drain the old water, wash the aquarium, draw clean water into it and heat it to the required temperature.

So, we have decided on the question of what water to pour into the aquarium. Our water quality tips are not only suitable for turtle breeders, but also for an aquarium with fish and other inhabitants.

How much water to pour a turtle into an aquarium

Today, many exotic lovers have different species of turtles as pets. These pets do not require daily care and do well in captivity. But having brought home an aquarium and having bought a turtle, the owner often has a question, how much water should the turtle put in the aquarium and what water to use? We will answer these questions within the framework of today’s article.

    Amount of water

Let’s now figure out how much water to pour the turtle into the aquarium. Turtle aquariums are divided into 2 types, some of them have a glass shelf, which is decorated like a piece of sushi, and on which the turtle climbs to soak up the light under the light of an incandescent lamp, some of them do not have such a shelf.

With the first type, everything is simple. the amount of water must correspond to the shelf, the water level should be below the shelf by a couple of millimeters so that the turtle can freely climb onto land and return to the water.

If the aquarium is not equipped with a shelf, you should calculate the volume of water based on the size of the turtle and the number of individuals that live in the aquarium. The general rule of thumb for turtle breeders is that the volume of the tank should be 4 times the length of the turtle. Thus, if your turtle is 10 cm in size, a 40 liter aquarium will be sufficient, which should be filled with water from 1/3 to half of the capacity.

If the aquarium contains two individuals, then its size should be increased by about one and a half times. It is imperative that an aquarium for an aquatic turtle has an island of land, about 20% of the volume of the entire aquarium.

Note! The distance from the water to the top edge of the aquarium should be at least 15 cm so that your pet cannot escape.

In any case, if there is an opportunity to purchase a larger aquarium, this should be done, in such a dwelling the turtle will be more spacious, the water will be less polluted, and the view of a large aquarium is more presentable.

And how to equip an aquarium for a water turtle, we described in detail here.
