The cat is lethargic and sleeps all the time: what is the reason

Among the pathological causes of lethargy are the following:

  • poisoning,
  • hormonal disorders after childbirth or as a result of the use of contraceptives,
  • side effects of corticosteroid anti-inflammatory drugs,
  • musculoskeletal pathologies,
  • infectious diseases,
  • worms;
  • anemia;
  • hypovitaminosis;
  • tumors;
  • chronic diseases.

Stress causes a dual response in cats. The pet can fall into a sleepy state or, conversely, show aggression.

When a cat’s condition should trigger an alarm

The owner of the animal should be alerted to prolonged fasting. For kittens, the critical period is one day, for older pets. 2; cats for three days. Alarming sign. refusal to drink, drop in temperature below normal, profuse salivation.

In such situations, an ambulance veterinary aid is required.

If the cat is lethargic, does not eat or drink: what to do?

If the animal does not eat or drink, then there is a reason that causes vomiting. If toxic substances appear in the gastrointestinal tract, the body gets rid of them, first of all, with the help of diarrhea and vomiting. This scenario develops in case of poisoning or infectious diseases.

When the intestinal lumen is clogged with bones, hairballs, worms, there is only one way to get rid of poisons. through the mouth. An attempt to eat or drink something is suppressed reflexively, vomiting occurs. Therefore, the intake of food and water is stopped.

When the pet is not eating or drinking, and the appointment with the veterinarian is delayed, it is necessary to protect him from dehydration. The owner of the cat is able to independently inject him subcutaneously with Ringer-Locke’s solution or saline in unlimited quantities. Use 5 or 10 ml syringes. After the injection, an accumulation of fluid forms, which quickly dissolves.Do not use water for injection, it causes pain.

You should not treat the cat yourself. There is a great risk of undermining health and creating a problem for the veterinarian when diagnosing.

The cat is constantly sleeping and sluggish: norm or pathology

Prolonged rest and lack of appetite to a certain extent is normal. If the cat has a hearty supper, he is overcome by drowsiness. The duration of rest per day is normally 12-14 hours or more.

The cat lacks sweat glands, and cooling through the open mouth is not typical. Therefore, in hot weather, the pet protects against overheating by a decrease in muscle activity, and also stops consuming calories from food. Fruitful mating has a calming effect on the female, and she prefers to sleep.

At the beginning of pregnancy, a cat, like a woman, has toxicosis, while the symptoms are still invisible. Protection against malaise is fasting and sleep. In older pets and individuals with a phlegmatic psyche, idleness and poor appetite are normal.

The norm is medication lethargy after taking sedatives or antihistamines, as well as the state after surgery.

The owner of the cat should be alerted by additional symptoms:

  • the desire to hide in a dark corner;
  • the pet stops grooming or does it too often;
  • diarrhea and (or) vomiting develops;
  • shortness of breath, cough, discharge from the nose or eyes;
  • muscle tremors appear;
  • increase in body temperature or fall below normal;
  • gums lose color.

If fasting and lethargy continue for more than two days, you need to see a veterinarian. Lack of appetite accompanied by cessation of drinking is a dangerous symptom.

The cat eats poorly and sleeps constantly, lethargic: norm or pathology, the reason for what to do when help is needed

Why Does My CAT SLEEP All the Time? Is It NORMAL?

The norms of the duration of sleep in a kitten

Wild cats are predators that prefer to hunt their prey at night. Get enough sleep during the day to recuperate. Sleep is sensitive, intermittent, the animal wakes up from the slightest rustle. Always on the alert. Pets do not have to get food for themselves, they live in favorable conditions, where they are fed their fill, build houses, equip sleeping places. They do not need to hunt at night and be on alert during the day, so they can afford to sleep longer. up to 18 hours a day. However, the features of the life cycle in wild and domesticated cats are similar. As for small cubs, their sleep duration is much longer than in adult animals.

Newborn kittens, as well as babies under the age of two months, sleep almost constantly. At this stage, the formation of the digestive, nervous, immune, muscular system takes place, so a lot of strength is required. Energy replenishment occurs in a dream. After 2 months, the accelerated growth of the body begins, at 4 months the kitten reaches the size of an adult cat. In a dream, protein food is digested, forces are accumulated for the period of wakefulness. In addition, the kids are very playful, active, which also takes energy. Kittens sleep a lot due to natural changes in their body.

You should not shake, wake up a small pet. This behavior of the owner provokes diseases of cats, weakness, malaise, impaired physical development. With age, the duration of long sleep in kittens decreases, they begin to sleep 15-18 hours per day, depending on individual characteristics, lifestyle.

The kitten sleeps a lot. we understand whether it is normal or not!

When a kitten sleeps a lot, you don’t always need to worry, sound the alarm. The kid is gaining strength, complex processes of adaptation to the external environment, food take place in his body, it takes a lot of strength, and then their replenishment. The sleep of an adult cat lasts from 15 to 18 hours a day, kittens de in the first months of life can sleep constantly, interrupting only for food. Contact a veterinarian, you need to revise the conditions of care if other alarming symptoms are found.

Disease Symptoms with Drowsiness

Unhealthy appearance of the baby, passive behavior is a cause for concern. Diseases can be identified by the following criteria:

  • refusal to eat, water;
  • dry or too wet spout;
  • lethargy;
  • weakness of the limbs;
  • brittle wool;
  • increased body temperature;
  • underweight;
  • plaintive meow.

With the help of sleep, the animal tries to defeat the disease, but it does not always work out. To recuperate the kitten requires the intervention of a veterinarian or a change in the owner’s attitude. For example, you should change the food, take the pet for a walk to a fresh age, etc.

Sleep phases in kittens

Modern scientists have found that a cat’s sleep is divided into 2 phases, which are absolutely different from each other.

  • Shallow. Like a nap. This is a slow or low-wave sleep. The pet curls up into a ball, closes its eyes, but quickly reacts to the slightest rustle, touch. The cat can wake up at any moment. In the process of low-wave sleep, muscles tighten, pulse slows down, blood pressure, body temperature decrease, metabolic processes slow down.
  • Deep. It is called REM sleep. It is characterized by noticeable eye movement. Comes 10-30 minutes after shallow sleep. The peculiarity of the phase is the complete shutdown of consciousness. The cat can inadvertently fall from the chair on which it has failed to wash itself. The animal periodically changes its body position, but does not wake up. Often it stretches out to its full height, spreads its legs. Surprisingly, during deep sleep, brain activity does not decrease, it is the same as during wakefulness. when hunting, playing. However, the pressure, body temperature decreases, the pulse decreases, breathing becomes uneven.

The rate of exit of the animal from the phase of deep sleep is 300 times slower than shallow sleep. The pet can be lightly stroked, it will sleep. Scientists have also found that cats have dreams. At the same time, they emit a meow, squeak, sigh deeply, twitch their antennae, eyebrows.

Causes of drowsiness in kittens

In addition to natural physiological reasons, external factors affect the duration of a cat’s sleep:

  • Lifestyle;
  • food;
  • weather;
  • presence of irritants.

Kittens sleep longer if they are full and play a lot. Long sleep is needed to fully recuperate. A short period of wakefulness on hot, sultry days, before rain, when atmospheric pressure decreases, the level of nitrogen in the air rises. Drowsiness is affected by hormones. Females sleep longer. In addition, the activity of pets directly depends on the breed. If the kitten sleeps a lot, but the period of wakefulness shows normal activity, looks completely healthy, there is no reason for panic. When the baby grows up, gains strength, changes his lifestyle, the regime will change.

Why does the kitten sleep all day?

A cat needs about 16 hours a day to get enough sleep. which is why frequent and long sleep breaks are the norm for cats. Kittens spend even more time sleeping, especially during breastfeeding. The first days after birth, animals sleep almost all the time. Sleep duration is shortened when kittens open their eyes and begin to explore the world around them. After the start of independent feeding, the duration of sleep becomes even less and by six months the kitten gets enough sleep in 15-17 hours.

Factors affecting the quality of sleep in an animal

Three groups of factors influence the duration of an animal’s sleep:

  • Neurological. Determined by the emotional and nervous state of the cat (for example, she is calm or excited).
  • Hormonal. Depends on the gender and age of the kitten.
  • Wednesday. Provide for the influence of the environment and the nutrition of the animal.

The combination of three factors determines the required duration of rest. The main thing is that at this moment nothing bothers the pet, otherwise it will take more time to sleep well.

Sleep phases in cats

Each owner noticed that the animal in a dream jerks its paws or quickly moves its eyeballs. Sometimes the pet, on the contrary, sleeps very lightly and checks the environment with every rustle. It depends on the phase that occurs at one time or another.

  • Doze. The initial stage of sleep or short rest of the animal. During this period, the cat relaxes the muscles, but does not lose vigilance, the pet hears everything perfectly, perceives and smells. During a nap, the cat is ready to defend or attack itself at any time. This stage takes most of the time.
  • Shallow sleep. It is characterized by muscle relaxation and active tissue cell division. The cat’s brain begins to work at a faster pace, the animal does not perceive smells, but still hears sensitively.
  • Deep dream. The stage of complete relaxation of the muscles of the cat. You can notice sharp twitching, they occur due to nerve impulses. At the moment of this stage, her immune system works as actively as possible.
  • REM phase or REM sleep. The period when the animal dreams. During the REM phase, the cat actively moves its eyeballs, which is its hallmark. This phase is the shortest and can last only a few seconds. The animal’s self-preservation instinct does not allow to be in REM sleep for a long time, since during its period the pet’s muscles are completely paralyzed.

Most of the rest, the animal simply sleeps, which does not allow it to recuperate quickly, so the pet needs a lot of time to sleep. If the kitten sleeps for a long time, eats well, gains weight and feels vigorous after waking up, do not worry. If there are other suspicious signs, you should contact a specialist to find out the reason.

The norms of the duration of sleep in a kitten

Newborn kittens can sleep 22-23 hours a day, then the duration is gradually reduced. By 1–2 months, the pet spends about 18 hours on sleep, and the rest of the time is spent playing, exploring the world, eating and going to the toilet. By 4-6 months, the kitten is rebuilt to the mode of an adult animal and sleeps for 14-16 hours.

The quality of sleep directly affects its duration, so the animal should have a quiet place for solitude, where you can feel safe. If the kitten is constantly stressed or scared by something, then he will sleep all day, but still remain lethargic. This can lead to future diseases.

Causes of a kitten’s long sleep

The kitten needs to get enough sleep, since his body has not fully matured, and it takes a lot of strength to explore and adapt to the world around him.

If your pet sleeps a lot, you need to pay attention to the situation during its rest. Perhaps due to noise, stress, a new location, and other factors, the kitten is unable to relax and fall asleep normally. If he is constantly asleep, then this is simply not enough to gain strength, so the pet will be lethargic and constantly half asleep.

It is necessary to arrange a sleeping place for the kitten in the quietest and farthest corner of the house. Children should not be allowed to disturb and frighten the animal in a dream. Once the kitten can get enough sleep, the total amount of rest time will be reduced. If you cannot cope on your own, you need to contact the clinic.

  • Painful sensations. For a long time, the pet does not manage to choose a place and lie down comfortably, it constantly turns and turns. You can find out where it hurts with the help of gentle palpation.
  • Frequent visits to the litter box. This is due to problems with the kidneys and urinary system.
  • Neurological disorders. As well as strong excitability, stress, fear, noise, etc.
  • Hunger. If the food of the kitten is not calculated in terms of calories, then he does not receive enough nutrients.

Sometimes the kitten is constantly sleeping due to health problems. A long rest is required when:

  • helminths and other parasites in the body that weaken the immune system (therefore, the animal constantly feels tired);
  • infectious diseases accompanied by characteristic symptoms (high fever, problems with stools, watery eyes, nasal discharge, vomiting, refusal to eat);
  • oncological diseases (deterioration of coat quality, refusal to eat, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, etc.);
  • problems in the work of any body.

All diseases have noticeable symptoms, but they may not appear immediately, which complicates the situation.

Adult animals and kittens are sensitive to the weather, so on a rainy or cloudy day, they will prefer to spend more time in a lounger. A cat can constantly sleep just out of boredom and laziness, this rarely applies to kittens, but it is worth trying to actively play with the pet during the waking period. perhaps this will help him to sleep well next time.

A long sleep of a kitten should not cause anxiety among the owners, if the pet eats well, gains weight and actively spends time after waking up. If the animal has any other symptoms or ailments, it is necessary to show it to the veterinarian to diagnose and solve the problem.

The origin of long-term sleep in cats

Initially, cats are nocturnal animals. Such were their distant ancestors, so are the modern mustachioed-striped ones. This quality is especially well known to residents of rural areas, private houses and summer cottages. Living in complete or partial freedom, cats come home only to eat and sleep off, preferring to travel or hunt at night.

Domestic cats, living indoors all their lives, rarely roam the apartment at night, so they sleep much more than their freer counterparts. For those, a significant daytime sleep is simply necessary, since the body needs to recover and digest prey. How house pussies sleep so much and retain the flexibility of the spine and joints, the elasticity of muscles with almost complete absence of physical activity is a mystery that has not yet succumbed to scientists

Other

The duration of dreams may not only depend on age and breed. There are other factors:

  • the state of the nervous system. If the cat is in an agitated state, then it is difficult for him to fall asleep. If a cat has given birth to kittens and for some reason cannot feed them, then you can observe how she shows anxiety, worries. In this state, she will not fall asleep thinking about the kittens. If there were guests at home or family members had a fight, the pets feel everything, worry and may fall into a state of stress. This condition can develop into depression and mental illness;
  • Environment. Cats prefer a quiet, calm, cozy place. In an excited environment, the cat will not sleep;
  • the state of the body. If the cat begins to sleep a lot and does not get up to drink or eat, the alarm should be sounded. The pet may be sick. Cats, when they feel pain, discomfort, hide it from their owners. Many individuals have dental problems, but they do not refuse food;
  • obesity. If the cat is overweight, then any activity takes a lot of energy. They get tired of games and replenish their energy with sleep.

There are many reasons for prolonged sleep. If you look closely at your pet, you can understand the reason. How much sleep you need, each animal decides for itself.

kitten, constantly, sleeping

Age

Does the kitten sleep all the time?. It should be so. Sleep at their age is 22-23 hours. They wake up to eat. At 1 month old, kittens begin to be active, play, learn about the world around them. Sleep is reduced and ranges from 21 to 22 hours. Rest hours decrease over time. One-year-old cats are more awake and have less time to sleep. On average, pets sleep from 14 to 20 hours, the duration is individual. After 8 years, changes occur, the duration of sleep increases. If the pet is no longer small, then all the same, but sleeps more than 20 hours a day, do not panic.

Why does the cat sleep a lot?

Cat owners are well aware that their pets are big sleepers. At any moment they can be found sleeping peacefully in various places. Scientists have calculated that the average cat is quite capable of sleeping up to 22 hours a day. But sleep is not always a sign of calmness and well-being. In some situations, excessive sleepiness may indicate a disease, be a sign of imbalance in the animal’s body.

What affects a cat’s sleep duration

At first glance, it seems that cats are fast asleep, but in fact, they wake up from any rustle. The duration of sleep remained the same as that of the feline ancestors. After a successful hunt, wild predatory cats rested, and the body digested food at this time. Modern breeds live in about the same way.

  • light nap (dreaming time is half an hour);
  • deep fast sleep.

During a nap, the animal lies on its stomach, presses its legs, ears are raised or are in a tangle position. This state practically does not differ from the waking state, but less energy is spent. During the period of drowsiness, breathing slows down, blood circulation and body temperature decrease. But only the animal will feel the danger, will immediately jump up, replacing drowsiness with an active state. During a deep dream, they relax, rest, and the immune system is actively working.

Natural factors that increase sleepiness

As with humans, cats can also be affected by external causes that cause them to sleep longer than usual, such as:

  • weather. when it is cloudy, rainy outside, not only the owner, but also his pet begins to fall asleep;
  • calm environment;
  • feeling of satiety;
  • fatigue after games, attention of guests or household members.

Other causes of increased sleepiness. Cats and kittens can sleep for long periods of time at low atmospheric pressure, for example, during the summer heat or before the rain. Increased sleepiness of the animal can also be associated with a change in hormonal levels.

Studies have shown that female kittens sleep longer than their more active siblings.

Features of dreams. Cats fall asleep slowly, from a state of dormancy, they enter the phase of deep sleep. Scientists claim that the mustachioed striped is capable of dreaming. And the owners notice how their sleeping pets twitch, touch their paws, squeak in their sleep. This behavior of the animal should not cause anxiety among the owners.

Why do cats sleep so much?

When cats sleep, they wiggle their ears, paws, meow. this means that they are dreaming. The baleen have their own biological clock that works in accordance with time, climate, environment, health.

Why do cats purr

Each of us, having heard this characteristic velvety sound, repeatedly wondered why cats purr. This is an inherent property of all representatives of the cat family (but for some, the purr is more like a roar), a pet can thus thank the owner for food, for affection, express his love and affection. Mother cats purr when feeding or licking their kittens. The kitten purrs, in turn, while a loving mother or, already in an older age, when the owner takes care of him. But rumbling may not always mean pleasant emotions. It happens that cats start to purr under severe stress, when recovering from serious injuries, so it is important to understand how cats purr in order to determine the cause.

Scientists who are interested in this ability of cats conducted studies in which it was found out why cats purr. The process itself is a throat sound that is interrupted by the diaphragm and larynx. As a result, continuous sound is reproduced in the frequency range from 25 to 150 Hz. Why are they doing that? Many independent studies point out that it is these sound vibrations that contribute to the restoration of bone and other types of body tissues. Perhaps this is why the sick cat is constantly purring. Or it happens that cats come to the sick owner and purr, sitting right on the diseased part of the body.

You can often see a touching picture. a cat feeds its children, purring loudly and low, and kittens echo it much quieter and subtler. From birth they get used to repeating everything after their mother, which is why the kitten hums, trying to be like adults.

Despite the fact that there are quite a few reasons for cats rumbling, with a little effort, you can learn to understand what a particular shade of sound means. After all, it only at first glance seems that all cats always purr the same way, if you listen carefully, over time you will be able to catch the difference.

  • satisfied and delighted;
  • wants to get something from his master;
  • tries to help the owner get rid of stress or pain;
  • tuned in to peaceful communication and play with other cats;
  • scared by something;
  • in pain or dying.

When a cat is humming, it is always different, depending on the situations described above. If the sound is harsh, it means that the pet is very happy, and he likes what is happening at the moment. If the purr is soft and gradually becomes quieter, it means that the cat is bored or starts to fall asleep. If the cat purrs softly, but with high notes, he wants to receive something, for example, a treat or affection, or is curious (with this sound he can greet you when you come home). If the sound of a purring cat changes from a high short note at the beginning to lower and deaf ones afterwards, the cat thanks you for something, it could be her favorite toy or food. There is also an interrogative rumbling, or rather, a short abrupt sound, which means “what’s the matter?” It can be confused with a greeting, but the greeting is much longer and consists, as it were, of several iridescent sounds.

The way cats purr does not depend on the breed or on the appearance, heredity of the animal, the volume and tonality of sounds for all animals is different. For example, in the UK, there is a cat called Smokey, which is in the Guinness Book of Records for the loudest rumbling in the world. It hums constantly, and very loudly. the sound reaches 68 decibels! But her mistress does not complain at all, although she experiences some inconvenience when watching TV or talking on the phone, when Smokey begins to rumble, and the sound in terms of volume is comparable to the operation of a hairdryer or a vacuum cleaner.
