The shepherd is absolutely necessary for the cattle breeder, otherwise the herd will not be saved. And for the ancient Jews, cattle-breeding work was actually the main one. And, nevertheless, this did not affect their attitude towards the four-legged “guardians”: “now those who are younger than me in years laugh at me, those whose fathers I would not agree to place with the dogs of my flocks”(Job 30: 1). The Savior’s words also contain the concept of the hierarchy of man and animals. He spends this thought repeatedly, and when he heals the withered-handed Pharisees he says directly: “Who among you, having one sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take it and pull it out? How much better is a man than a sheep!”(Matthew 12: 11, 12). He also says to his students: “how much are you better than birds?“(Luke 12:24).

Therefore, when it comes to a derogatory attitude towards dogs, it is in vain to perceive it as evil. It would be absurd if the all-good Creator hated his innocent creation. The Bible points us exclusively to the hierarchy, the violation of which and “there is an abomination to the Lord thy God“. A person who is mentally and spiritually healthy, naturally, loves the creatures created by God. Therefore, the death of pets causes sadness in people. However, it is sometimes clearly excessive. In such cases, there is reason to think about the correctness of our spiritual life. The Lord commanded us first of all to love our Heavenly Parent: “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind“(Matthew 22:37). The second commandment is closely related to this commandment.like her: love your neighbor as yourself”(22:39). If a person learns to observe this, then love for animals in his soul will take its hierarchically appropriate place.

The biblical understanding of the hierarchical place of the dog was also characteristic of our ancestors. But the abundance of forests in Russia, it would seem, increased the role of the four-legged helper much more significant than in ancient Palestine. If there “dog business” was limited to shepherd and guard-sentry functions, then on Russian soil, in addition to protection, it included amateur and commercial hunting (domestic animals were avoided for food, they mainly consumed game), and in the Far North, hunting was added to tax. Today you can hear: “Living in the city, we cannot keep our dog somewhere outside the apartment, although in the villages they are usually kept in a kennel in the yard, as before. There are no bans on many things in our life, which any decent person will not allow himself, but since “perestroika” they began to repeat: “What is not forbidden is allowed.” So, allowing what is not prohibited, we have flooded Russia with a wave of child homelessness for the third time after the Civil War. It is quite possible that the word “dog” that has entered the Russian language, used as a curse word, is of Tatar origin, but this does not explain its derogatory connotation, as some think. Tatar origin and “robe”, and “barn”, and “shoe”, and many other everyday words, but nobody uses them with a derogatory tone. But swearing is “dog swearing”, the language of the dogs, their speech behavior. As a swear word, in the Slavic languages ​​there is an expression “dog faith”, referring to the Gentiles.

Attention to animals, caring for them should not divert moral consciousness from attention directly to the person himself. Sometimes one of us gets annoyed with people, insults them, and always caresses his dog.
