Why in Russia it was impossible to keep a dog in the house?
In the old days, dogs were rarely seen in the house: they lived in the yards and guarded the house. Rich people kept kennels where hunting dogs lived. And nowadays, four-legged animals can be found in almost every second city apartment. Is it right to keep a dog in the house?
There is an opinion among believers that a dog is an “unclean” animal, God-repugnant. Indeed, in the Old Testament, the dog is called unclean. But with this word the prophet Moses also calls other animals. There is a version that in this way Moses tried to rid his people of idolatry: after all, the ancient Egyptians worshiped various animals, seeing them as deities: cats, bulls, crocodiles, falcons and even scarab beetles. True, Moses declared not all animals “unclean”. For example, he called the cows “clean” so that they could be eaten. But in any case, Christians have abandoned the “divine” nature of our smaller brothers. At the time of Christ, dogs began to be kept at homes as watchmen. Thus, a Canaanite woman says to Jesus: “Lord! But the dogs also eat the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters ”(Matthew 15:27). The apostle Paul warned: “Beware of the dogs!” (Philip 3: 2), referring to the bearers of false doctrines. And the Apostle Peter said about sinners: “The dog returns to his vomit” (II Peter 2:22). But the Savior’s words sound especially edifying: “Do not give holy things to dogs and do not throw your pearls before the pigs, so that they do not trample it under their feet and, turning, do not tear you to pieces” (Matthew 7: 6). In the biblical sense, the dog could not occupy a high place in the world hierarchy. After all, Christ commanded “to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37), and also “to love your neighbor as yourself” (22:39). That is, first of all, we are talking about love for God and man, created “in the image of God”, and animals, although they are helpers of man, can in no way claim to be equal with him.
These Christian principles could not but affect the way of life in Russia. Although in Russia a lot of functions were assigned to dogs: they guarded houses and livestock, went hunting with their owners, and in the Far North were also used as sled dogs, even in severe frosts these animals were not allowed into the house beyond the canopy. In the famous Domostroy “Dogs are repeatedly mentioned among other” filthy “animals that have no place next to a person:” For cattle and dogs, keep special bowls for this, and do not trash clean dishes. ” From time immemorial, it was also believed that a dog should not be in a room where there are icons or other shrines. It is also impossible to consecrate the room in which the dog is. By the way, it is no coincidence that the word “dog” and its derivatives. “dog”, “bitch”. became dirty words in Russian. So, mate used to be called “dog swearing”: dogs cannot talk, they bark. The Slavs also have the concept of “dog faith”, referring to foreigners.
Archpriest Viktor Kuzenko claims that the prohibition to keep dogs in the house belongs to the so-called “church traditions”. “In the Bible the words“ dog ”,“ dogs ”and their derivatives are found at least 25 times. he writes. For the Ancient East, for the pages of the Bible, a dog is, first of all, an image, a metaphor, emphasizing deprivation, poverty, suffering. In two cases. in Deuteronomy (23.18) (“do not bring the price of a dog into the house of the Lord”) and in the Gospel of Matthew (7.6) (“do not give holy things to dogs”). you can see a negative attitude towards the dog, in the aspect the impurities of this animal. However, the analysis of the context does not provide grounds for unambiguous conclusions. In Deuteronomy, the Jews are commanded not to sacrifice money received from prostitution and from the sale of a dog into the temple. In the Gospel of Matthew about the dog, the dictum is given: “Do not give holy things to dogs”; put in a row with another “do not throw pearls in front of pigs”, that is, do not do meaningless acts or, more simply, do not do stupid things. ” True, in the medieval cathedral documents of the Russian Orthodox Church, there really is a prohibition to bring a dog to church, since its stay there is simply inappropriate: the dog can smell, it can behave restlessly, violating the church atmosphere. Of course, no one forbids keeping a dog in an apartment but maybe we should also remember the Bible. A dog is not a deity or a person. So should she be allowed to eat at the same table and sleep in the same bed with the owners, as many dog owners often do? Should I give her a place on the rug in the hallway?
Why Muslims can’t keep a dog at home
This is also one of the delusions, Muslims can be kept in
house a dog and it is forbidden to treat this animal badly. And, in general, to
any animal is badly treated in Islam, it is forbidden by holy scripture. If
it is forbidden to keep a dog in the house, then only for reasons of his own
hygiene. A dog can carry illness or infection, but if your dog is clean and
you regularly vaccinate him, then you can keep the dog in the house.
The same can be said about representatives of other
religions, in general, in any religion you will not find a direct prohibition of the content
dogs in the house. It may be written that keeping a dog in the house is not recommended.,
but you won’t find a ban there.
If you go into religion, then there is an opinion in which
both Christians and Islamists converge. a dog has no soul. It seems like a soul only
human after death does not disappear, but goes to the Last Judgment and there already
they decide where for her, for this soul, to go further to heaven or hell. With this statement
it is possible to argue and as a proof we would like to cite one small
a story told by a veterinarian from the same clinic.
Why can’t you keep a dog at home? Religious rules
Religion has always walked alongside a person and his life. AND
it was impossible to expel the belief in God from a person, and it will never work. Even in
troubled times of the civil war, when temples were destroyed and destroyed, and
the priests were shot at faith in God, it was not possible to destroy. In religion
there are many prohibitions and rituals that not everyone knows, and many do not even
guess about them. We all know the most important commandments, there are 10 of them.
don’t kill, don’t steal and so on.
Many people know or think they know that
Christians are forbidden to keep a dog in the house, but this is why keeping a dog in the house
Christians or Orthodox Christians cannot say for sure. Let’s in this
we will try to figure it out with you.
Why is it forbidden for the Orthodox to keep a dog in the house
Many of you remember your carefree bare-bellied childhood.,
when you were sent to the village to see your grandmother and you were studying there all summer it is incomprehensible
than, they ran, swam in the river, drank warm fresh milk in the morning and begged

keep in the house. And the answer is actually simple, according to some church canons
keeping a dog in the house is forbidden, many believers think so, and our
the grandmothers in the villages are usually very religious and devout. Why is it forbidden to keep
a dog in a Christian house?
Many people think, and some priests about it
They say that a dog is like a wolf, and if so, then it is unclean. If the dog
will enter the house where the icons are hanging or into the consecrated room, then the room is needed
hallow again. In fact, this is a big mistake. There are religious rites
and beliefs, but there are near-religious. And such beliefs are considered from
evil one. If we turn to holy scripture, then there are no prohibitions on

sources where it really says that the dog should not be brought into
temple. But this does not mean that a dog is an unclean animal. The ban was
imposed because dogs are restless, may have an unpleasant odor
and so on, and there are no other prohibitions on dogs.
The only exception is the snake, because if you believe the biblical stories
it was in the serpent that the devil possessed in order to seduce Eve. Until some time
a Christian who met a snake on his way had to kill it. so,
we conclude that if you are a law-abiding Christian, then get a dog and live with
it is not forbidden to her in the same house under one roof.
Whether a dog has a soul or not
For ten years in this clinic for examinations and for
treatment was treated by a man with a German shepherd, the dog’s name was “Vasya” why so,
hard to say.
So, at the moment when the doctor was giving Vasya an inoculation or injection, the dog bit her coat sleeve and closed her eyes without making a sound. TO
Unfortunately, the dog fell ill with a terrible disease, the doctor diagnosed cancer. Long
the owner fought for the life of the pet, but the moment came when the dog could not sleep, and
just howled in pain. The dog had to be euthanized. There was no limit to the grief of that man,
the doctor was also very worried, because she knew this dog from a puppy age. Vaska
buried, and his owner never got himself a dog again.
for a while a little girl with a shepherd puppy appeared on the doorstep of the clinic
in his hands, hanging ears, a cheerful look with sparkles, a curious nose, everything is like
usually. The girl brought her new pet for vaccination. When the puppy
put on the table and the doctor took a syringe in his hands, the puppy carefully took her sleeve
robe in his teeth and closed his eyes.
So, do dogs have souls or not? So smart, loyal,
loyal animals who are ready to follow their master into fire and water and,
if you need to give your life for him, they cannot but have a soul.
the question why it is impossible to keep the dog in the house, ask the question in response, and why
is it impossible? You can keep the dog in the house and you need to, just don’t forget about hygiene
worth it. In order for the dog not to harm you, you need to do it on time
vaccinations for the dog, examine the dog after walking on the street. See a doctor for
prevention or call him home and then no problems with m
you will not have a dog, no matter what religion you profess.
Why Orthodox Christians can’t keep a dog at home?
In fact, the answer to these questions is elementary: all the words about the “disgusting” of dogs. nothing more than a lie. And those who are trying to prove the opposite are simply not well versed in the dogmas of their own religion. The opinion about the inadmissibility of dogs in consecrated places refers to the so-called near-church traditions, which in fact have nothing to do with the true Orthodox Church, and often only harm its parishioners.
In the Holy Scriptures of the Old Testament, a dog is really called an unclean animal, but this is not a reason to believe that an unfortunate animal can desecrate any shrine by its mere presence. In fact, according to Scripture, many animals (not only dogs) were called unclean by Moses, who saved the Jews from the centuries-old Egyptian slavery and found the Promised Land. But he called them that not because they were bad, cursed, or not pleasing to God, but for a completely different reason.
The fact is that in ancient Egypt the cult of animal worship was widespread. The Egyptians considered bulls, cats, crocodiles, falcons, even scarab beetles sacred! And Moses, seeking to deliver his people from such wicked idolatry, called the animals unclean. On the other hand, Moses, on the contrary, declared some beasts deified by the Egyptians, for example, bulls, to be clean. This, too, was not done in vain. Thus, people could eat “clean” animals, but “unclean” ones were unsuitable for this. That’s why you can’t keep a dog in an apartment. People could not consider those who were sent to the slaughter as God, and in the same way, they could not consider “unclean” as God, and therefore the question of deification of animals was resolved.
Therefore, it is obvious that the contemptuous attitude of some Orthodox Christians towards dogs has no adequate explanations and historical reasons.
Why shouldn’t Christians keep a dog at home? (church response)
In the canonical rules of the Russian Church there is only one rule concerning dogs. And it says that it is forbidden to take them to the temples. However, this is not due to the fact that the animal is sinful, but to quite obvious, prosaic reasons, such as smell and restless behavior, which can disturb the reverential silence of the church. This prohibition does not apply in any way to houses and apartments, and of course the dog cannot in any way affect the grace of the house, or sacred relics.
In any “uncleanness” and “unrighteousness” one must blame first of all oneself and one’s sins, and not the unrequited animals that have been with us throughout human history and have remained our most faithful friends. A dog will not make your home nasty, just as icons and crosses will not make it holy. Everything in this life depends on ourselves.
Why you can’t keep a dog in the house?
Among many devoutly believing people, there is an opinion that a dog is an unclean, god-loathing animal, and it is absolutely impossible to keep it in a house where there are icons or other shrines. It is forbidden to consecrate apartments and houses in which dogs are kept, and if the dog had the imprudence to enter an already consecrated room, then it must be consecrated anew, since it is desecrated.
But what is the fault of the dogs, you ask. Why can’t you keep your dog in the house? Examples of loyalty and devotion, the best friends of people for centuries and millennia, rescuers, bloodhounds, hunters and defenders, why did the Church suddenly take up arms against them? What have they done to God if they were considered unworthy of Him??
The article is interesting to some extent, but I disagree with it. How can a dog be an unclean creature? After all, a dog has been and remains a friend to man for centuries, and such a friend that he will never betray. It does not matter whether you are rich or poor. you money or not, she’s just your friend. People betray, and the dog will never betray its owner!
The dog has been living in my apartment for almost 7 years and we all love her very much. I was pleased with the article in the sense that there is nothing wrong with this prejudice. And the dog does not seem to me an “unclean” animal.
The dog has been living in my apartment for almost 7 years and we all love her very much. I was pleased with the article in the sense that there is nothing wrong with this prejudice. And the dog does not seem to me an “unclean” animal. On the contrary, if there are children, it is much more fun for them with a dog.
Probably, a lot depends on the owners. We had neighbors who kept a shepherd dog in their apartment, and it doesn’t seem like they ever cleaned the house. Accordingly, the doggy smell clogged everything even on the staircase. A friend once took an incredibly smelly Pekingese. He needed to wash after every walk to keep his groin. Maybe this bias exists especially for such cases.
What is fraught with the presence of a dog in the home
According to the Orthodox, evil spirits can easily enter the house where the dog lives, which is why there are often cases of dogs attacking their own owners. Dogs do not spare either adults or children. Repeated cases of such brutal attacks are known.
Of course, every creature has the right to life, but each creature has its own, assigned by God, a place on earth. Animals should serve man, for this the Creator created them. The dog occupies a strong place in a person’s life, but its place is next to the dwelling, and its purpose is to protect this very dwelling.
There is no friend and guard more faithful than a dog, it protects its owner, serves him faithfully. In the North, it is extremely difficult to do without dogs, they are both the main means of transport and play an important role in the economy. These animals have many roles, however, it is impossible to forget about where their place should be.
Nobody says that dogs should be thrown out into the street and left without care, as many hard-hearted people do. If you have an animal, you must be fully responsible for it, its life and health. But, if you go to the temple and pray for the saints of the Image, there should not be an “unclean” animal in your house.
Let it live in the yard, for this you can build an aviary or a booth, where the dog will carry out its main mission, guard and protect your home.
What the Bible says about this
Let’s go back to the Bible, where the word “dog” and the word “dogs” are mentioned about 25 times. In the Ancient East and the Bible, the dog is associated with poverty, deprivation and suffering. It is worth paying attention to such passages “do not bring the price of a dog into the house of the Lord”, “do not give holy things to dogs”.
Here, a nagative is clearly seen in relation to four-legged pets in the aspect of their impurity. It is forbidden to donate money to the temple, intended for donation, which came from the sale of dogs or was earned by prostitution.
According to Blessed Pelagia of Ryazanskaya, if a dog lives in a house, the grace of the Holy Spirit leaves it. over, if a given animal lives in a house that has icons, the owner of this dwelling is not allowed to take communion.
Another example from the life of an old man whose name is Alexy Penza: once an old acquaintance priest came to visit him and took his sons with him. The elder immediately felt and foresaw that one of his sons had a dog in his house.
He strongly recommended not to keep it in his apartment in the future, and subsequently, by all means, consecrate it. He repeatedly noticed that a dog’s life is intended for security actions, so its place is next to the house, and not by the bed on which a person is reclining.
Why you can’t keep a dog in an apartment
As far as I know, dogs cannot be kept in the house (apartment), only cats. And why is this so, from the point of view of Christianity? What happens to animals after death? What is the role of animals in human life?
Pondering the answer to your question, I remembered the lines from the psalm, which is read every Saturday evening at Sunday service:
That there is a man that you remember him, or a son of man that you visit him? You did not belittle him much before the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor. And you set him over the works of your hands. You put everything under his feet. small and large cattle and wild beasts with them, birds in the heavens, and fish in the seas, and everything that moves in the depths of the seas (Ps. 8: 5-9).
These lines of the psalm are borrowed from the book of Genesis, where on the first pages we read:
And God said: Let us make man in our image and in our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over cattle, and over all the earth, and over all the creeping things on the earth (Gen. 1:26 and 28).
So, a person is “crowned with honor,” that is, he was given authority over all the animals to which he gave names (Gen. 2:19). Before the Fall, Adam had complete control over the animals. But even after sin (although Adam sinned altogether), God, who loves mankind and overcomes our sins with goodness, did not take away all power from man and did not completely deprive him of dominion. He left us in the service of animals useful in life: a sheep gives wool, a cow gives milk, a pigeon can carry mail, a dog guards a house and finds criminals, etc.
In a sense, we can say that animals are really needed to decorate human life. precisely, for serving him and for eating. God blessed eating meat after the flood (Genesis 9: 3).
According to Christian tradition, dogs are actually not accepted in the house. But at the same time, it is obvious that the dog has always lived next to the person. Only she did not live in a person’s dwelling, but in her kennel on the site. Some unclean animals sometimes appear in our homes against our wishes, for example, mice and rats. Here is for their catching cats and allowed into the house.
Sometimes caring for animals turns into a painful passion, to the point that animals are loved more than people and mourn over death with bitter tears. Once, while visiting a certain institution, an unfamiliar woman approached me, asking for my advice and consolation, like a priest. It turned out that her cat died a week ago, and she cannot calm down, cries and drinks sedatives. I had to tactfully explain to her that animals cease to exist after death. Only man is given eternal life and the hope of inheriting the Kingdom of Heaven. Such attachment to the earthly (including to the creatures of the earth) is sinful and testifies to the fact that a person is wasting his spiritual strength in vain and in the wrong direction. The power of love is given to us to serve God and our neighbors. This does not exclude caring for animals, but they are given to us in service, and not we are to them. What a pity, in this regard, to look at sterile families that give birth to dogs and cats instead of taking an orphan for upbringing.
A question to the priest. the section of the site “Russian Faith”, which is especially popular. We receive new questions for the Orthodox priest almost every day, and especially a lot of them come from novice Christians who have only heard about the Old Believers, but did not have the opportunity to get to know it better.
We know how difficult it can be to cross the threshold of the church and ask your question to the priest in person. And of course, personal conversation and a living word of consolation will never replace e-mail. However, we need spiritual advice.
We believe that all the efforts of our pastors will not be in vain, even if at least one of those who asked will receive some spiritual benefit.!
Quite recently, I met my old friend, who has been breeding certain breeds of dogs all her life and selling puppies for very decent money. This is how the woman lived until she began to go to church, help at services and completely immersed herself in the life of the Orthodox Church.
The problems arose by chance, the father found out that she lives in an apartment with the dog, and that, literally, sleeps with her on the bed. He urgently asked to give the dog and consecrate the apartment.
Such a reaction at first embarrassed my acquaintance, but after receiving an explanation, she did not hesitate to get rid of the animal, giving it to her relatives, and continued with a clear conscience to serve in the temple.
Why is Orthodoxy against keeping dogs in the house
Today’s pet boom is driving many crazy. Cats and dogs are almost equated with family members. This is wrong according to the ministers of the church.
Let’s try to understand why true Christians treat a dog as an “unclean” animal, why after staying in a dog’s house, it certainly should have been illuminated.
If we turn to the Bible, we will see how this burning question is interpreted in relation to this animal. Deuteronomy says: “Do not bring the wages of a harlot and the price of a dog into the house of the Lord your God, according to any vow, for both are an abomination to the Lord your God.”.
By the way, exactly the same opinion exists in Islam, there also, a dog is not allowed into people’s dwellings, being considered a defiled beast.
It is necessary to treat animals kindly, carefully and carefully, but at the same time to understand where their place is. It is considered a sin of mercy if an animal that has become objectionable is thrown out into the street. However, the dog cannot be in the room with the saints.
If you are a true Christian and adhere to the canons and commandments of Orthodoxy, you will certainly listen to what was said in this article.
Let’s start with history: what was the attitude to the “four-legged friend” in ancient times?
The Greeks loved and cared about dogs. It is enough to read Homer. The Romans even put armor on fighting dogs.
But among the peoples who read the Bible as a sacred Book, the attitude was exactly the opposite. In the Old Testament, out of thirty mentions of a dog, only in two cases it does not have a negative meaning. The hatred of the ancient Jews for their enemies, the Egyptians and Romans, who bred and honored dogs and used them in battle, was probably transferred to animals. According to the law of Moses, these animals were considered unclean. For a Jew, comparing someone to a dog is the height of an insult. Even the money received from the sale of the dog, equivalent to the payment of the harlot, could not be brought into the Tabernacle. “to the house of the Lord thy God according to no vow, for both are an abomination to the Lord thy God“(Deut. 23:18). But if the dog was sold, it means that they still kept it with them.
The shepherd is absolutely necessary for the cattle breeder, otherwise the herd will not be saved. And among the ancient Jews, cattle-breeding work was actually the main one. And, nevertheless, this did not affect their attitude towards the four-legged “guardians”: “now those who are younger than me in years laugh at me, those whose fathers I would not agree to place with the dogs of my flocks”(Job 30: 1). But as pets, dogs, according to the Bible, appear late, and with the same guarding function: when Tobias began to make his way to Raguel, he was accompanied by an angel “and the boy’s dog with them“(Article 5:17). Abner’s exclamation is significant: “Am I a dog’s head?”(II Kings 3: 8). Its meaning is almost identical to Solomon’s aphorism: “a living dog is better than a dead lion”(Eccl. 9:14). It is so clear here that any comments are superfluous.
How Many Dogs Are Too Many? | It’s Me or the Dog
By the time of the earthly life of Jesus Christ, four-legged watchmen were often kept at homes, as evidenced by the response of the Canaanite woman to the Savior’s refusal to help her: “Lord! But the dogs also eat the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters”(Matt. 15:27). And in Christianity, a dog does not become a lion. The apostle Paul warns: “Watch out for the dogs!”(Philip 3: 2), referring to the false teachers. Ap. Peter expresses himself even more strongly when he denounces sinners with the old proverb: “the dog returns to his vomit“(II Peter 2:22).
Christians of the first half of the 5th century believed that Attila, the leader of the Huns, was born as a result of “a criminal relationship between a girl and a dog” . he was so hated.
The words of the Savior sound edification for all times: “Do not give the holy things to the dogs and do not throw your pearls before the pigs, so that they do not trample it under their feet and, turning, do not tear you to pieces.“(Matthew 7: 6). We are talking here, of course, about people: about the impossibility of preaching the Gospel to the proud, unrepentant, bitter, for such a sermon would be a temptation of our Lord our God.
The Savior’s words also contain the concept of the hierarchy of man and animals. He spends this thought repeatedly, and when he heals the withered-handed Pharisees he says directly: “Who among you, having one sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take it and pull it out? How much better is a man than a sheep!”(Matthew 12: 11, 12). He also says to his students: “how much are you better than birds?“(Luke 12:24).
Therefore, when it comes to a derogatory attitude towards dogs, then it is in vain to perceive it as evil. It would be absurd if the all-good Creator hated his innocent creation. The Bible points us exclusively to the hierarchy, the violation of which and “there is an abomination to the Lord thy God“. A person who is mentally and spiritually healthy, naturally, loves creatures created by God. Therefore, the death of pets causes sadness in people. However, it is sometimes clearly excessive. In such cases, there is reason to think about the correctness of our spiritual life. The Lord commanded us first of all to love our Heavenly Parent: “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind“(Matthew 22:37). The second commandment is closely related to this commandment.like her: love your neighbor as yourself”(22:39). If a person learns to observe this, then love for animals in his soul will take its hierarchically appropriate place.
The issue of classification into “clean and unclean” animals in Orthodoxy has been revised. Holy Patriarch Photius wrote: “Much is very good by nature, but for those who use it becomes a great evil, not because of their own nature, but because of the viciousness of those who use it. for some circumstances. For since the Egyptians, to whom the Israelite tribe was in the service, paid divine honors to many animals and badly used them, which were very good, Moses, so that the people of Israel would not be attracted to this bad use and not ascribe divine veneration to the wordless, in the legislation it is just called them unclean. not because uncleanness was inherent in them from creation, in any case, or uncleanness was in their nature, but because the Egyptian tribe used them not cleanly, but very badly and wickedly. And if something of the deified by the Egyptians Moses attributed to the rank of the pure, like a bull and a goat, then he did not do anything disagreeing with this reasoning or with his own goals. Calling something of what they idolized as an abomination, and committing another to slaughter, and bloodshed, and murder, he equally protected the Israelites from serving them and the harm arising from this. after all, neither vile, nor slaughtered and subject to slaughter could not be considered a god among those who so treated him. ”
The biblical understanding of the hierarchical place of the dog was also characteristic of our ancestors. But the abundance of forests in Russia, it would seem, increased the role of the four-legged helper much more significant than in ancient Palestine. If there “dog business” was limited to shepherd and guard-sentry functions, then on Russian soil, in addition to protection, it included amateur and commercial hunting (domestic animals were avoided for food, they mainly consumed game), and in the Far North, hunting was added to tax. And yet, even the cold climate was powerless to pity the Russian Christian: in the most severe frosts, the dog did not dare to step beyond the canopy; her settlement in a residential building is a sign of a blurred religious consciousness, the fruit of which is the breeding of decorative dog breeds.
Today you can hear: “Living in the city, we cannot keep our dog somewhere outside the apartment, although in the villages they are usually kept in a kennel in the yard, as before. Apparently, from such purely practical and traditional considerations, the opinion arose that the dog should not be kept in the house. There are no and cannot be prohibitions on this “.
There are no bans on many things in our life, which any decent person will not allow himself, but since “perestroika” they began to repeat: “What is not forbidden is allowed.” So, allowing what is not prohibited, we have flooded Russia with a wave of child homelessness for the third time after the Civil War. If there is a need to keep a dog in a city apartment, then it is reasonable to give her a place in the hallway, but for some reason she lies on the couch or caresses her owners right in bed. How many times have I heard confessions that the dog has become another “family member”. No, the popular saying “a dog is a friend of man” should be understood by a Christian not literally, but conditionally, keeping in mind the Biblical values. Animals do not have the image of God. Of earthly creations, only man was created in the image of God. One of the properties of this image is the immortality of the soul. But the souls of animals are mortal, as taught by Palamas. And St. Basil the Great warned: “Run away from the ravings of gloomy philosophers who are not ashamed to consider their soul and the soul of a dog to be homogeneous among themselves.” All the vulgarity of humanization of the four-legged “friend” was vividly shown by MA Bulgakov in the once forbidden story “Heart of a Dog”.
It is quite possible that the word “dog” that has entered the Russian language, used as a curse word, is of Tatar origin, but this does not explain its derogatory connotation, as some think. Tatar origin and “robe”, and “barn”, and “shoe”, and many other everyday words, but nobody uses them with a derogatory tone. But swearing is “dog swearing”, the language of dogs, their speech behavior. As a swear word, in the Slavic languages there is an expression “dog faith”, referring to the Gentiles.
Attention to animals, caring for them should not divert moral consciousness from attention directly to the person himself. Sometimes one of us gets annoyed with people, insults them, and always caresses his dog. This speaks only of the indisputable flaw in spiritual and moral life. “Take heed, beloved, into the intelligent essence of the soul; and do not understand slightly. The immortal soul is a precious vessel. See how great heaven and earth are, and God was not pleased with them, but only with you. Look at your dignity and nobility, because the Lord did not send Angels, but the Lord Himself came as an intercessor for you, to call upon the lost, wounded, to return to you the original image of pure Adam. ” [four]
When paganism again affected Russia, then “folk occultism” also declared itself. So on Christmastide the girls thought: “Bark, bark, little dog, where is my betrothed!” And how many of the most incredible signs people associated with their yard watchmen, from their howling to their gait! The same swearing was widely represented in various kinds of rituals of clearly pagan origin. wedding, agricultural, i.e. in rituals related to fertility. Mat was a necessary component of these rituals and was, of course, a ritual in nature.
The case of Elder Paisy Svyatogorets is instructive. Once he was asked:
Today voices are heard: “There is no basis for the ‘discrimination’ of dogs by Orthodox Christians.” That’s right, “discrimination” does not, but the hierarchical consciousness should not leave Orthodox Christians. Otherwise, you have to come to terms with such cases, such as what happened in the UK, when the dog played the role of the bridesmaid at the wedding. How to agree with the assignment of human names to dogs and dog names to people? To write about what has already become a commonplace, but still it is necessary to remind that such a thing is nothing but sacrilege. The names are taken from the calendar. And this is a desecration of Christ in man and an insult to the Heavenly King on the Throne, spitting at the saints. the friends of the Son of Man. Than then we hope to be justified at the Court?
Here against my will I want to quote M. Scott’s catchphrase: “Do not look at your dogs as people, otherwise they will look at you as dogs.“.
Despite the symbolism, hierarchical consciousness and banned the image of St. martyr Christopher with a dog’s head. Religious and magical complexes are associated with “dog-headedness” among the pagan Slavs, for example, according to written sources. eating female breasts, feeding puppies by women, ritual murder of babies.
Although in early Christian times the dog was a symbol of loyalty to church beliefs and vigilance in relation to heresies (images of a dog are often at the foot of grave monuments, which was pointed out by A.S. Uvarov, who considered these images to be a symbol of the Christian himself ).
All Dogs Go to Heaven. You Can’t Keep A Good Dog Down (Original vs Re-animated)
However, what was permissible at the dawn of Christianity does not give permission for its use today.
We must grasp one simple truth: without a hierarchically correct understanding of the world, there is no salvation for man.
And the attitude to the dog is one of the links of this understanding.
Why you can’t keep your dog on a chain all the time
Several reasons will make you think about the constant m of a security guard on a leash:
- Restriction of freedom badly affects the character of the pet. Because of the chain content, the dogs “get wild”, they even begin to rush at the owners.
- Diseases of the bones, musculoskeletal system. It is especially dangerous on the chain of a young individual, which does not have a dense skeleton.
- Accidents are possible. A chain wound on a pole, on a hook is a common cause of strangling a dog.
- Complete defenselessness. What a dog on a chain can do is nothing. His freedom is limited to a certain segment, such dogs and become a victim of robbers. They neutralize them with electricity, a stick. A guard on a chain will not allow penetration only to a section of the length of the leash. that’s all. Also, do not discount the appearance of other animals in the yard. Alien ferocious or rabid dog, the wolf bites, not giving a chance to escape death.
- In the event of a fire, flood, fall of a tree, the dog will die. If the chain link is tightened on the hook, the animal will not enter the booth and will freeze in the cold all night, get wet in the rain or burn out in the sun.
Chain or free range
It is worth immediately determining that not all dogs can and should be kept without a chain. In some cases, the protection of the territory without a rigid leash is impossible. For example, if there is a playground behind the gate, a busy highway, garages, etc. Jumping a two-meter fence for an adult dog is a piece of cake. Therefore, the chain is a necessity, not violence.
The option with an aviary is also not always suitable. large breeds need space, and in conditions of a limited area, the chain is much more compact. But there is one caveat. the leash is selected strictly according to the weight of the animal, making it as long as possible.
The second point is the constancy of the leash. This is unacceptable for any breed. the dog must be released. And so that the guard could not get out of the site or walk with him on a leash in the designated areas.
Why is it dangerous to keep a dog on a chain and the rules of keeping in a private house
A private house with a guard dog is normal and understandable. But how right is it to keep a pet on a chain all the time, and is it worth it to have a dog at all, if he does not have a booth, an aviary, but only a chain?
The opinions of the owners were divided, someone thinks that without a chain, it’s not a guard, and someone wouldn’t even think to restrict movement.
Rules for keeping a dog in a private house
If, nevertheless, it is impossible to let go free-range, the dog is put on a chain, but at the same time, several rules are observed:
- make the leash as long as possible. the dog should have freedom of movement at least three times the length of the body;
- they build a warm booth or an aviary, insulate it and raise it to a pedestal so as not to be flooded with water;
- remove any obstacles in the movement area of the animal so that the chain does not get stuck or caught;
- regularly walk the pet, train it, take time;
- keep bowls clean, monitor the availability of water in the access area.
It is necessary to build a canopy next to the booth, where the dog can rest in a relaxed state. Letting the animal run around the territory of the site, they put fences of the required height. Some owners set up a booth next to the fence. this is an excellent “springboard” for jumping over the fence.
Requirements and standards for keeping animals in a private house
The rules for keeping dogs on the site are not as strict as in the apartment. The site is private property, so the owner has the right to dispose of it as he pleases. The animal is kept indoors or outdoors, free-range or chained.
In order to avoid collisions with law enforcement agencies, a sign with the announcement “There is a dog in the yard” is hung on the gate. This will save you from trouble if intruders arrive. The warning works as a preventive measure. If the animal harms a stranger, the owner will be able to present a warning as an excuse for himself and his pet.
Why Muslims can’t keep a dog at home
The attitude towards dogs among adherents of Islam is rather controversial. Many consider them to be completely unclean animals, with whom one cannot have any contact. Others do not see any sin in the dog and keep it at home even for fun. And what does classical Islam say about this??
In this case, one should rely on hadiths (legends about the words and actions of the Prophet Muhammad), which are a valuable source of Islamic law. Sharia. So, in one of the sayings of Imam Muslim it is said that the dishes should be washed several times after a dog licks it. From this, Islamic theologians have deduced that the saliva of an animal is “najis”, that is, impurity. Accordingly, it is unacceptable to perform namaz (prayer) or perform any other ritual actions in contact with dog saliva. In addition, some theologians define the animal’s fur as “najis”.
Hadith. sacred legends about the life, miracles and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, are one of the main cultural values of the Islamic world
In this case, the dog itself is not considered a “dirty” creature. So, Imam al-Nawawiy said that it is permissible to keep this animal for hunting or protection purposes. That is, for practical purposes. And if there is no benefit, then there is no need to start it, as follows from the saying of the theologian. Imam al-Shafi’i echoes him, saying that it is impossible to keep a dog without benefit.
Thus, in the view of classical Sunni Islam, there is no unanimous prohibition on keeping a dog. However, it can only be started for practical purposes, for example, to guard the yard.
Also, Muslim theologians draw attention to the fact that it is unacceptable to keep a dog in the house itself. One of the hadiths of Imam Muslim warns against this, warning that angels do not enter the houses where the dog lives.
Truly, angels do not enter the house where the dog is.
Man la yahzuruhul-fagih, volume 1, p. 246, hadith 743
prohibitions on keeping a dog for any purpose are contained in Shiite Islam. This is most likely due to the fact that the Shiites are mainly the inhabitants of Iran (Persians), on whose lands Zoroastrianism competed with Islam for a long time, whose followers highly valued this animal. Accordingly, the ban on dogs is part of the fight against alien religions, and cruelty towards these animals is a sad example of religious rivalry.
Despite all this, in the Quran itself. a sacred book for every Muslim, there are no direct indications that keeping these animals is prohibited. And even on the contrary, in the sura “Cave” there is an indication of a dog named Kitmir, whose name later acquired a certain magical meaning (it was inscribed on the messages to protect them from loss).
A dog in a Muslim’s house: is it possible
The dog is one of the very first animals that humans have tamed. This is due to her amazing official qualities. Today, dogs are the most popular pets along with cats, however, according to some religious and philosophical beliefs, keeping them at home is not allowed. In particular, Islam speaks about it.
Attitudes towards dogs in the modern Muslim world
There are very few dogs in the modern Islamic world. Almost no one keeps them as pets. However, they are used for protection and hunting, and an example of this is the famous Arab greyhounds. In the countries of the Arabian Peninsula, a good greyhound is valued on a par with a falcon or a thoroughbred horse, and its price can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Slugi (Arab greyhound) is a very rare and ancient breed of greyhound dogs, which has always been of great value, including for Muslims
An old Arabic proverb says: “A good falcon, a fast dog and a noble horse are more valuable than twenty wives.” In ancient times, Muslims had a reverent attitude towards Arab greyhounds. The women sewed clothes for them, and the men carried them with them in the saddle, lowering them to the ground only at the sight of game.
Outside Arab countries, dog bans are not strictly enforced. For example, among most of the modern Kazan Tatars, dogs in the house as a pet do not cause any gossip.
My neighbors are Muslims. They come from Azerbaijan. They have a small dog in their house, their children constantly walk with it. Since the dog is indoor and only leaves the house for a walk, he is not valuable as a guard (I have never heard him bark at anyone). But my neighbors, on the contrary, avoid cats, although I heard that Muslims have a reverent attitude towards them.
Muslims do not keep dogs in the house for the reason that they are prohibited by Sharia law. However, the use of animals for practical purposes (for protection or hunting) is quite acceptable and, from the point of view of classical Sunni Islam, is not a sin.
